  1. So I had a lead on a pair of 86 Heresy II's at a fantastic price, and the seller "may" be interested in taking a pair of older Polk Monitor 4's off my hands in the deal. The II's would end up as either the mains with an 81 Heresy I as the center or continuing with the 81's as the mains and a II as a center and the second as a spare or used as a back channel later.Thoughts? [:^)]
  2. I've heard alot of good press on the MRX series, what kind of issues were you having?... ROb Lock up issues where the receiver needed to be unplugged to free the problem. Complete loss of audio under different listening modes, with the receiver needing to be unplugged to correct the problem. Dead Component Input Channel. I'm not a technically challenged person…and I rode out the growing pains of the line for almost 2 years. 3 different receivers exhibited similar issues, and the 3rd had a completely dead input channel. My retailer gave me the option to swap into another manufacturer, after receiving a rash of complaints from other customers as well. He suggested the Pioneer based on what I was using for speakers, and I couldn’t be happier. The Anthem didn’t have the presence that the Pioneer has. They’re night and day.
  3. I'm thinking about throwing the RS-3's back on the wall and pulling one of the other Heresy's up from to try asthe center. I think that's the best way to determine how another Heresy will sound in place of the existing RC-3. Although...there's 5 years vintage between the HOL fronts and the earlier HDBR's. The Pioneer MCACC should provide some balance between them though. It's worked fairly well with the HOL/RC-3 combo that's up from at the moment.
  4. Not to thread jack...but I'm shopping in the 76 - 81 date range to better match the existing pairs that I already own (as other members have suggested).
  5. I'm selfish. [8-)] Other members have convinced me of the benefit of picking up a (read "another") pair if the opportunity presents itself.
  6. I've got an RC-3 that sounds great...but I have a hankering for another Heresy for my center. It you decide to go the RC-3 route...I have all of the original packaging to ship if you would like to discuss it. There's not a mark on it. Walt
  7. If I start considering another Heresy for a rear channel, I run into a serious real estate (or lack there of) issue. I'm in an apartment and my listening area is 16' x 14'. Heresy's as my surrounds in the corners is awesome! To think about pushing my seating 5' closer to the television to have enough room for another Heresy behind it...just doesn't make enough sense to warrant it. The RS-3's for a back channel would be do-able, because I can hang em on the back wall.
  8. The hunt for another Heresy is on. I did some major cleaning of my living room yesterday, and believe I can tuck a Heresy cabinet into the existing slot under the TV. My fronts are 81 HOL's and the surrounds are 76 HDBR's. I've upgraded the caps and regasketed both pairs (though the HDBR's had no rear gasket originally). The 5 year difference in builds really is apparent. The 76's seem to have a deeper richer sound than the 81's...though not as punchy. The punchiness might be due to not having run the Pioneer MCACC on the 76's and comparing the HOL's which I had. But the HDBR's have all metal horns as well. Thanks for the Dope for Hope link! 9. My retailer swapped out my 2 year old Anthem MRX 500 dollar for dollar into a Pioneer SC 65. I've never even considered Pioneer in the past (older receiver is a Denon 3300), but I've been absolutely blown away since hooking it up. Depending on what type of mobile phone you're using...you can control many Pioneer receivers on the fly with iControlAV2 or iControlAV2012 through Google or the AppStore. Congrats!!!
  10. I'm pretty excited to have swapped out my old RS-3's for a couple of HDBR's jacked up off the floor about 12". But I've still got an RC-3 as my center channel. Is the obivous answer for a new center another Heresy? I've got a pair of reconed Ohm L's and Polk Monitor 4's that aren't being used anywhere...but obviously these don't have the depth that the Heresy's do. If I can swap out the existing center speaker, I "may" use the RS's and RC as height (wide?) and a back speaker speaker if I wantt to clutter up wall space. But I'll more than likely use them to set up something for my mom. I've been pretty content with 5.1 up until now...but can drive up to 9.2. I'm using a new Pioneer SC-65 (swapped out my problem ridden Anthem MRX-500) to drive everything with a factory rebuild Velodyne HGS-12 (original owner) for the sub. Thanks! Walt
  11. So I haven't posted for a couple of days. I really appreciate the added details and I never would have put 2 & 2 together regarding the HDBRbuilder member name, Andy. I tore into these yesterday to swap out the caps and gasketing. Surprise...no sealing gasket used on the back's...so I technically didn't have to install "new" gasketing. Completely different than my 81 Heresy's. Metal horns, the eariler K-77's and K-22 EF's. Overall...these sounded "cleaner" after everything was done. I'm probably going to opt to do any finsh work on the cabinets when the warmer weather comes back around. I'm in an apartment at the moment, and I'm not sure that I'm ready to keep the windows open for a week right now. I might get ambitous though, and just close off one room if I can't incorporate these into my existing HT easily. I wiped the cabinets down with a damp rag as somebody suggested above, and was happy enough with that for the time being. Walt
  12. This makes the most sense. One thing I have a concern with, is that there are irregular cuts in the motor boards of each cabinet. I'm thinking that any "finish" would make these more apparent, wouldn't it?
  13. I really appreciate everybodies input, and I'm still trying to get my head around the whole finish process. It'd be great to get some product names that have been used, just to better familiarize myself with any nuances (read: what to be careful about) to be aware of. The thought of potentially screwing up these cabinets makes me sick...
  14. Temporary home until I swap out the caps and regasket the backs. The old Ohm's make nice stands...at least for the moment... []
  15. I just picked up pair of Heresy HD-BR’s that look like they just left the factory (s/n 30P985 & 986). The cabinets look absolutely amazing, and I'd like to try to keep them that way if possible. Any suggestions on how to care for the unfinished panels? Thanks in adavnce... []
  16. Returned the CT's and Bob was good enough to refund the purchase price. I chose to eat the $37 total in shipping costs from sending these back and forth a couple of times, over keeping what I couldn't verify was getting above 6000 hz. I wouldn't have been able to put these up for sale on the board with any kind of clear conscience. The question I have for those that have done recent buys/installs is...have you, or do you have the ability to take some measurements of the actual output? I was told that "some people say they hear a big difference...others have said that they don't hear much diffference at all" Based on my experience...I'd be curious to learn if folks are hearing what they think they're hearing?
  17. I've got an older Denon 3300 with a Klipsch sub, set up in my gym. 1. Shall I configure less than 100 Hz in the receiver for Sub Out? YES 2. Shall I configure LOWPASS Control to 100Hz in Subwoofer ? Can't answer without direct experience...
  18. I may take you up on the 77's. If I'm going to stick with K77's I'd like to try and get new diaphrams for mine and rebuild them if possible first. Maybe I'm being anal about wanting to see the improvement the CT's are making, but even when I swapped out the caps in the crossovers...I was able to document the results. This is the reason why I'm so concerned to see a 10db+ drop at 6000 hz with the 125's. I think that anybody seeing that in their own speakers would have the same concern. No?
  19. That's what I was thinking...and I had hoped that Bob would have made that recommendation. But he's as much at a loss to explain this as I am. If that is the case, I would think that this issue would have come up before now, as I'm not the first to install the 125's in a pairof 30 year old Heresy's. I'm open to suggestions...but want a clear plan if I'm going to open the back of the speakers again. Direction from Bob would be my preference...but I'm hoping that I'm not the first to run into this problem, and maybe a member here has had the same experience?
  20. The difference shown isn't two 125's...it's the speaker output with a K77 in one and the other with a CT125. K77's and CT125's were night and day. But if the Heresy's with the 125's are dropping out at 6000 hz, I wouldn't expect to be able to make any kind of comparison. Honestly...if I saw that the CT's measured higher on ther graph than the K77's I'd keep the CT's...with the understanding that my ears just weren't able to hear the difference between the two. But there's like an 8000 hz spread between the two based on the ARC sweeps... [:S]
  21. I really need some suggestions as to what could be causing the problem I'm having with the pair of CT125's I have. When I did the intitial install of the tweeters in my Heresy HOL's I ran my Anthem Room Correction to account for the improved frequency range the CT125's. To my surprise, I found that the high end was dropping off the chart around 6000 hz. Bob suggested I send the tweeters back for testing, thinking that they weren't working at all. While I was pulling CT125's I had a K77 in one speaker and a CT125 in the other, so I decided to run some measurements for kicks and giggles. Those results are below with the K77 in the Left Front and the CT125 in the Right Front. When Bob got these tweeters back he found that they were working, and ran some measurements with the CT125's installed in a pair of new Cornscala's. Those results are shown here. I got the tweeters back yesterday. I picked up some gasketing material and longer wood screws since the speaker cabinets seemed to be losing some wood from all the openiing and closing of the rear panels. After a few hours work, I had the CT125's back in the Heresy's and ran the room correction again. Guess what? In the above...Bob suggested I try changing the speaker leads because those were the only thing that he didn't test when he got them back. I used the speaker lead from one of the K77's...with no change in the results of the CT125. So I pulled the CT125 out of the Right Front Speaker and ran the measurements again with the K77's... I REALLY wanted these CT125's to work. I have no idea why Bob would get one set of results at his place, and I'm seeing something completely different when I install them. Note that the K77 measurements are consistant before/comparing/after the CT125's are installed...so there are no changes in the ARC performance to explain what I'm getting for results. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to get these to work the same way in my speakers that Bob saw in the Cornscala's. It can't be a difference in measuring equipment, because the results follow the CT125's. Does anybody have any ideas?
  22. You could be right about the klf's. But that's all in the past now. The Heresy's are teamed up with a Velodyne HGS-12 that I had them go through completely, last summer...which is probably the main reason I'm not missing the towers. Moving forward...I'm hoping the K77/CT125 swap proves to be the improvement I had anticipated from everybodies earlier postings and the replies I've gotten here. The Forte driver recommendation sounds intriguing.
  23. Thanks for the ideas. I held on to my klf-20's for a while after picking up the HOL's because I was afraid that if I ever lost my sub...the Heresy's would never be able to produce the bottom end that the klf's were capable of. However...after some dealings with Velodyne later, I realized that I don't expect myself to not have a sub in my system anytime in the near future. So the klf's went and I've been listening to the Heresy's for the past week with my newer Anthem receiver instead of the Denon 3300 in the gym. They sound incredible in the livingroom. The imaging is head and shoulders above anything I ever got out of the klf's. Personally...I never really understood all the fanfare about the klf's. They were great for movies...but seemed lacking in the music department without a good sub to deliver the punch they weren't doing on their own. The reason I'm asking about the CT125's is because I encountered a problem with a couple I just received, and they're being shipped back to Bob for testing with his equipment. I have no doubts that Bob will resolve any problems. But I was just curious about any recent experience.
  24. Searching the forum I've mainly found most posts go back a couple of years. I'm maxing out whatever upgrades I can do with my Heresy HOL's and I wanted to hear folks experiences with recent CT125 tweeter purchases and installs. Thanks! []
