  1. So many new TT on the market,

    I would start there unless someone gives you a good old one and you pay to have it serviced.

    Decisions:

    • Manual v Semi Automatic, v Fully Automatic
    • Direct Drive v Belt Drive  performance varies by manufacturer and model
    • Hinged dust cover
    • On board pre amp and or digital encoder with USB out
    • Which cartridge
    • MM v moving coil
    • Spec out, which ones really matter
    • Speed adjustments and timing marks on platter
    • 33, 45, 78
    • Ease of tracking and weight adjustments
    • Curved v straight arm, not sure it matters

    My preference is semi auto pickup at end, hinged cover, MM cart, direct drive on my Dual is quiet.

     

     

     

  2. I have 8 amps on the shelves behind me

    One on my work bench, another I have to order the parts for to re-cap it

    In the LR I have 5, 4 on my surround system Yamaha, and my McIntosh stack for the LaScalas

    The Yamaha's have a slightly better sound than the Mac, two generations newer, but I like the blue lights

    Upstairs, its' 3 more receivers and a killer Yamaha stereo separates stack with heresy's

     

    Every Amp has it's own intricacies and design trade offs.

    Each one has it's own sound, which yes you can sit and pick them apart

     

    One of the best sounding is a Yamaha surround the DSP A -700

    Mint used they sell for $100 or less, it was Yamaha's statement product the year they brought it out

    New I think it might have been between $2-3000

    Using it with no pre amp, the sound is awesome even with a cheap Sony CD player

     

    The Yamaha MX 600, 800, 1000 Amps sound is awesome, and can be run with no pre amp

    They run in Class A for the first few watts, with LaScalas .5 watts is screaming.

    Maybe a passive volume control or a DAC with an integral volume control

     

    If the money is not an issue on the Marantz, why not have a fling with it ?

    Do some research and see if the Marantz is biased to run in Class A for the first few watts

    Class A mode will generate lots of heat, I would get a silent USB fan and leave it on top of the unit plugged into the switched socket.

    As long as you can sell it for what your paid, why not ?

     

    My acid test for any of them, is female vocal with few if any instruments or just piano

    is the voice clear, is it natural, easy to understand ?

    Are the piano strikes realistic, from zero to wide open on the strike.

    Piano covers almost the entire range of audible music

  3. I have had good luck with LaScallas in just about any space

     

    10-15 feet apart they sound great

    Corners, no corners doesn't matter. On the wall or off of the wall works.

    Thick carpet in the middle of the room is a plus

    Absorbent furniture is a plus

    Book cases with books or curtains at the back of the room for damping.

    Sound is always better with open windows.

    Glass is highly reflective, curtains work for damping when closed.

     

    In your space, I would put the TV in the middle of them and use the LaScalas for sound

    Getting line level, from the TV or source device or both is all you need downmixed to stereo.

     

    I put some small wheels on the bottoms of my LaScalas a few years ago

    Mids line up to my ears even better, and it's much easier to clean or rearrange them or get to the backs

    Get smoked Glass tops for the speakers, somehow a lamp or other will be placed on top of the speaker, no plants

    There are so many good new $500 integrated stereo amps for not much money, why reach way back

    A good 50 Watt amp should be plenty

    I would spec out all of the offerings everyone seems to have one.

    If you have to recap an old one, expect $300 if you can't do it yourself

     

    Plan B, used surround receivers with great DAC chip sets are a dime a dozen

    I picked up a great sounding Harmon Kardon for $20, 70 Watts with DAC and phone, tone controls

    Class AB with massive transformer

    My two cents

     

    The speakers may need to be recapped or new crossovers and new gaskets for the horns

    On some of mine, I had to replace the internal speaker wires, dry rot after 45 years.

    I see La Scalas in good condition for 1200-2000 pair

    Depending on the year 1970s-1980s used

    Crossovers can be recapped or changed out

    Same for the compression drivers

    Expect to recap, new gaskets for the compression drivers min

    Crites sells both

    Lots of options if you want new crossovers

    Congratulations on your Mac Heresy combination

    You can't go wrong with quality components.

     

    Every Amp has it's own sound, so more expensive may not sound the way you like it

    When you get into the quality components, it's a game of 1% improvement to the gear, the room, the source etc .. With Klipsch, you don't need hundreds of Watts with all of the cost, weight, engineering complications and added expense

     

    I like Mac and Yamaha sound from the 70-80s

     

    Frequently, opening an outside door or window has the biggest improvement

    A heavy curtain or book shelves behind your favorite chair can make big improvements

    The Heresys will sound best on end tables so that the mid horn aka squaker is at the same level as your ears with the speaker flat to the table, no slant risers under them.

    IKEA has some tables for 10 E each that work well

     

    If you have a hard floor, an area rug will make a big improvement in the center of the room.

    Hard walls, floors, windows all reflect sound.

     

    If you want to experiment, it can be done inexpensively

    Kenwood, Yamaha, Tecnics produced many great 30-60 Watt Integrateds with phono sections

    These can be had for as little as 30-50 Euros

     

    If you want to go a little further into the sampling hobby

    You can learn to replace the capacitors on working units

     

    One of my best sounding integrates is a Yamaha early surround simulation amp

    It was the Statement Product for Yamaha that year, the pride of the company

    Turn off the surround electronics, the analog stereo section sounds great compared to anything

    I got it for free from someone clearing out their basement

    If you want to be in the same room with the wife and kids

    I would snag a THX rated used Pioneer Elite Receiver for $200 or less

    I would have to check the block diagram, but I believe when the headphones

    are plugged in the speaker circuit is diverted to the headphone

    In this way you get a THX AB Amp with DAC for $200

    That you can also throw a pair of speakers on that sounds great.

  9. My family has had some duals for 40 years, very good products, the one I am using sounds and works great, did require a tune up at a shop to clean the internal mechanicals and lube the parts, alignment etc....

     

    I would take it to a shop that is familiar with Duals and let us know what the cartridge is before making any decision to replace it.

     

    Duals are lots of models, belt and direct, manual, semi and full auto

  11. Are all of the units plugged into the same power strip or surge protector ?

     

    Is the tuner on top of another piece of gear ?

     

    How close is the antennae to anything else ?

     

    Get some long RCA cables and try moving the tuner around with the ears on it.

     

    Try moving the power cord around, the wires wear and break and cause hum and other noise, better to try it on cheapo speakers at low volume, pick up a pair at goodwill or craigslist if you don't have some.

     

    Try running the tuner into a different system on a table top with your cheapo test speakers and see what happens. If you still have humm the problem is the tuner.

  13. Making a boat into an airplane is always a tough one.

    Fortes, re-veneer to something you like, maybe something exotic as keepers.

    You already recapped the crossovers, if the surrounds are good, good to go

    There may be a direct replacement tweeter that is better.

    Bring the mids up to ear level always a good idea.

     

    EV Driver might work for a bi-amp two-way active-crossover with EQ...... CornScala

    EV specs an EQ module on the cut sheet, 500-17Khz achievable

    Picking the right horns may take a few tries

    Crites may be able to recommend which one he sells that would most likely sound good

    and deliver 500-17khz

    Depending on your wood shop, you might want to make a practice box with cheaper plywood

    and experiment with different horn configs, changing out the motor boards

    this would also allow you do do things like run a 2x4 cross brace nailed or screwed from the outside etc

    Once you have your horn and motor board, you could throw down for the mdf or birch etc

    stiffener with lots of cut outs, lightening holes etc

    If you don't already have amps, look at picking up 2x Yamaha MX-600s and recapping them.

  16. A 50W - 70W amp should provide all of the power you need.

    I would also consider things like the numbers and kinds of inputs

    MM MC phono inputs

    Tape in and out if you want to add an EQ later, usually better than the basic tone controls

    If you are not a receiver collector

    I would consider one of the many excellent integrated amps

    Some great ones can be had ridiculously cheap on e-bay

    Pioneer made lots of them in the same era as the receivers

    I would also look at the Yamaha integrates from the 1980s

    the ones with the MM MC phono inputs

    I picked up a Yamaha A-1000 for $50 in excellent condition

    had to drive 3 hours to get it, but worth the trip, runs Class A for the first 10 watts.

    also doubles as a space heater in the winter. A-1000, A-1020, A-700, A-720

    And if you amp is more than 20 years old it should be recapped

    The only thing standing between your amp and blown speakers is two capacitors.

     

     

    Most of your listening will be well below .5 watts

    2 watts is screaming

    On my LaScalas I typically listen at 1/200th of a watt to 1/50th

     

    Damping should exceed 20

    SN 90 or greater, some of mine are rated greater than 120db

    Class B McIntosh, Class AB is most of the receivers, Can't think of a Class A receiver

    THD should be less than 1%, some of mine are rated at .003

    Slew rate on the older gear, can't think of the number

    Freq rating, number like 20-50khz or better, although many only provide 20-20 even though they go much higher

    If you listen to radio, I would look at the stats on the tuner vs how far away your stations are etc....FMTuners

  17. Every design has trade offs....

     

    Heresy's, Cornwall and probably Forte have bass and mid horn alignment, most of what we hear, with grey hair even more so. Voice spans bass and mid horn, so crossover implementation is even more critical.

     

    On my Heresy 1s, crites cross overs, female vocal is crystal clear.....

     

    Should Heresy 5 be a two way crossover and two drivers rolling off at 17Khz?

    Do the new tweeters sound any better than the original ones on the Heresy I ?

    or should they ditch it for the Beyma,

    I think that is the one everyone is in love with at the cost of some efficiency ?

     

    LaScala has the 400Hz horn which reproduces most of the mids and most or all of the voice, especially female vocal.

    Mid horn is approx 24 in deep, bass horn is approx 36 in deep.... so no alignment.

    If the vocal and bass guitar don't perfectly align......does it matter ? one of the imponderables of the universe..

     

    The tweeters don't align on any of the above,

    which goes back to the argument of 2-Way crossovers and rolling off around 17Khz

  18. I think this runs on a lap top

    you would need  a mic, which parts express also sells.

    They offer a mic you can run into a smart phone, which streams to the lap top.

    This should allow you to sweep the frequencies on your system.

    Typically you set up the mic where your ears usually sit,

    then run a sweep. Should be plenty of videos on you tube

     

    I run something different.... the other guys on here can probably

    give you some suggestions on sweeping the systems with this or another product.
