  1. I meant high res compared to the YouTube versions, std CD quality is most of the stuff out there.

This one popped up on my suggestions from 1976, Fleetwood Mac,

I think they have the same condition I do: weight gain, hair loss and lower energy.

I will bring some Cds and DVDs for the stuff I posted above.

Hoovephonic needs a PC to play with a player that supports multi region like VLC

  2. Pretty sure I have the DVD or CD for most or all of these tunes, Youtube would be a lower or low res version for comparison.

for the gear, we could use the high res DVD or CD, to see if it's a little smoother, sweeter, emotive, resonant....somehow with bad recordings, mastering, compression, sampling rates and quantization-errort he emotion is squeezed out of the music...... the gear can only hope to recreate it if it's in tact on the source.

I like the DVDs and for critical listening you can scan the image and listen for the various instruments, still no better than the source.

So I am thinking about a " new " turntable and was wondering about the Technics sl1200's what is it about 40 year old turntables that demand such a high price. My Sanyo from 1975  That I paid 150$ might get 250$ now ,but the sl 1200 are 500 and up.

A lot of the old high end gear was purchased at the PX when the dollar was $35oz gold.

I recall 3 tractor trailer loads of Throrens turn tables selling in a day when the fleet was anchored in Naples.

I run my chorus 1 and forte 11 with a Yamaha m-40 amp.the specs are good and I look at new amps and to get the same specs for the money is crazy. So what am I missing?I respect this forum and I know iam a newbie. the specs are 120 watts at 8 ohms 20 20 hz at .003% thd...snr is a whopping 127. damping factor is ok at 130.I love running the forte and chorus 1 together they seem to fill in the missing  pieces of the total balance of music the way I like to hear it.my question is can I improve the sound with a different amp?

I have 9 Yamaha amps, the good ones all sound great, and for the money on the used market they are very hard to beat.

There may be some better sounding amps, but there are plenty that are not nearly as good.

I love my Pioneers and McIntosh, but for sweet sound if I could only have one it would be Yamaha

  6. IMHO any good recording of a girl and a piano.

It's easy to tell if the girl sounds like a girl, the same for the piano.

The piano puts the amp through the paces going from zero to wide open on a strike.

There is also the question of if it moves you.

  7. I concur after further reading Michael. I thought it was a DAC change; not so much. I just purchased a new Connect and listened for a bit from it's analog out to my Marantz prepro. I will get some more time on it Sunday and use the prepro's DAC via digital out from the Connect.I am not really concerned about the analog out to the EMO mini X to Klipsch KHO-7 patio but was interested in perhaps upping the digital out to the main system. I do know that I really, really like how simple the setup was using my android, iPad and PC as 'controllers'. Nice unit open box @ $275 at the local BB.

Total disclaimer, I'm going 3 bills max on the one linked win or lose.

The Connect is a wireless transmitter and DAC?

So it takes analog and digitizes it for transmission or takes Digital and converts it to the Digital Protocol that Sonus uses for sonus remote wireless speakers?

It appears that you need sonus speakers, or are you going to use it as a remote control DAC front ending your existing system?

Is the Wyred mod an upgraded DAC? It appears yes. If yes, that would explain improved sound in some applications

Aren't there other devices, less money, you can buy as Bluetooth receivers for your I-phone that have built in DACs that you jack into your receiver or pre amp? or is the primary goal muti sources: android, iPad and PC as 'controllers

I would trust your ears on the Marantz built in DAC v sonus DAC, check the SN numbers the Marantz may have a big advantage.

Back from the hardwood veneer store (MacBeath in San Francisco) and they have some really beautiful wood... very tempting... but first we'll have to see how we do on the sale of the first pair.

Looking at the drivers, I think we should take apart the tweeter to sand off the rust and repaint. Anything we need to be aware of in this process?

Should we be concerned about the mildew on the woofer?

    -Mark

I would have the woofers reconed, or replaced, I don't know who the best speaker shop is in SF, but there is one.

The musicians that play live music blow their gear up all the time, so the musicians know who the best repair shops are. Or go into any place that has lots of live music and start asking around, you can also search the local yellow pages on line. There are several places you can ship them to for the recone Parts Express and Simply Speakers Tampa, and others.

    Recone or diagphragms price list

    http://www.simplyspeakers.com/klipsch-speaker-repair.html

I don't think Crites Sells recone, kits, but he does sell replacement woofers that would be all new. The existing ones can be sold on e-bay and someone else will recone them. Someone probably knows who the OEM was for the Woofers, ElectroVoice maybe and the kit number to order if you go recone. You can post this as a separate topic in Tech and someone will respond with the kit info.

If you are talking about the gasket between the woofer metal frame and the wood cabinet, that is part of the recone kit. The gasket between the wooden parts on the bottom of the speaker called the dog house for obvious reasons, can be different materials like weather strip.

The mid range drivers are the heart and soul of the LaScals so tread lightly if you are going to paint them or bead blast them etc, there is a rubber gasket to contend with and dust and debris concerns, They too can be sent out to Crites for new diaphragms and gaskets if you so desire, I would ask him about painting if you are sending them to him, pretty sure the top cover can be removed and painted, very carefully don't touch the diaphragms.

Judging by the mold on the speakers, I would give the inside of the speakers a careful look with a flashlight once the woofers are out.

Crites sells replacement tweeters with the lens two models, disassembly of the stock tweeters, bead blasting and painting may be more then you think, Check out K-77 Electrovoice tweeter rebuilds on Youtube. If you get new tweeters, the old ones can be sold on e-bay.

IMHO negotiate new tweeters, new woofers and new diaphragms for the mid range with Crites and ship him the mid range drivers after you repaint them for service and test. You will have new speakers in a better than new cabinet when you are done. The more expensive tweeters Crites sells are the better ones IMHO, ask others.

The large metal mid range horns interior must be inspected by looking for any casting defects visual, and then feeling with your hands for regular shape and smoothness particularity at the thin end the driver bolts to, if you have calipers measure the diameter, one LaScalas owner who owns a machine shop actually bored out his horns to bring them to spec.. If they need work, a good machine shop (performance engines etc) when they are done being amused will probably quote a fair price. Crites sells the replacement gaskets, looks like a hose washer. If they are machined, paint them sooner.

I like the AA crossovers and would build the system around them or the Crites replacement, the more on the mid the better.

Your old tweeters, woofers, crossovers can be sold on e=bay since they all test good, show the photo with the test meter connected so the numbers are readable. Describe and show any defects.

Agree, applying the veneer is the final step after all of the hard work is done.

This first horn removed has a very rough interior.  The pair I have at home have totally smooth surfaces. Would a machine shop smooth the entire interior or just the small end?  Is this a common condition?

You may be able to do it by hand, but I would call a couple of machine shops and take it over for them to look at.

They will most likely be amused and give you a hand once they understand the project, maybe make a guest appearance on "this old speaker" like when they visit their offsite vendors who are fabricating parts for them........

If the machine shop bores the units to spec for you, decks the mating surface, and either sands it or bead blasts it, or both, to smooth the surface, they will probably be willing to take the extra minute to put a coat of black epoxy on it for you. Bring them all 4 mid horns at the same time. Once the spray gun is wet, 1 or 10 is only a few minutes and isn't much paint. This will also enhance the value of the speakers, think world class rebuild. Might be a good field trip for your kids, machinists make up to and over $100K per year.

  9. With the first speaker taken apart and with a better idea of where we're headed,  we will begin to apply each step to all four speakers simultaneously. I have the ok to use my budget to invest in this project...in our own reality show "Flip these Speakers".

It looks like we are going to order larger sheets (4x8) of the veneer to meet the La Scala dimensions, so there will be some extra to practice with. A number of years back (this is my 41st year working here) our Clubhouse went through a complete year-long renovation. We moved the wood shop into the gym and the members helped custom fabricate the cabinets, counters and sinks for our third floor arts & crafts studios: woodworking, screen printing, ceramics, jewelry/metal arts (now also bike repair), photo lighting studio and darkrooms (yes, we still process B&W!). I've had a lot of practice with contact cement and plastic laminate, j-rollers and routers but not so much with wood veneers...though we have done some chess boards and geometric inlay. As we are going to be working with much larger pieces of veneer and trying a heat activated glue for the first time your suggestion for a prototype is a good one we'll certainly follow.

    Thanks for the good thoughts!

    Thanks

If you are doing "This Old Speaker"

Remember that they bring in the Plumber, the Electrician, the Landscape guy etc.

The prep and lamination are the parts that would give me pause, since I have zero experience.

I would definitely enlist the help of the veneer store for scraps, advice etc.......

IMHO there is nothing more beautiful than Mahogany or Rosewood $$$$$

  10. Just a thought......

I would hold off on selling the second set of LaScalas until you have finished the first set, if you can.

Refirbing the second set will be much faster and easier, you may be able to auction them or sell them on e-bay Craigslist etc specifically advertised as funding you kids program, especially if you do a world class rebuild, which is the track you will be on.

You might also let the veneer store know what you are up to and solicit their help, practicing with inexpensive veneer or scraps and perhaps some technical assistance on prepping the surfaces etc. Many will help when asked.

For me, I would build a 1/4 scale size wooden box with the shape of the LaScalas, and practice the filling, sanding and applying inexpensive veneers and edges to learn the skills on a throw away.

  12. Hello Folks, (Bubo)

I was hoping someone might tell us how to use this meter to check the ohms of the drivers (and what we should be looking for)...

    Thanks,

    -Mark

The speaker voice coil is exactly as the name suggests, it's a round spool of wire frequently wrapped around a cardboard tube, so what you are testing for is shorts in the wire by measuring the resistance in Ohms. Each speaker has a resistance spec you can compare to, once you have the numbers someone who knows them by heart can check the values for you.

  13. The Forte II and Chorus II both utilize Tractrix mid horns - courtesy of Bruce Edgar.

Dave Harris builds rock solid products - they are built exactly the way Dr. Edgar suggests - dual layers sandwiched together to squelch resonances - which are glued and screwed together.

I don't recall listening to a Chorus 2, but listened extensively to a Forte 2, and would easily list it as the best "sleeper" I have ever heard.

If memory serves me correctly, it has a number of tricks inc rear radiators, tweeter flare also tractrix?

Interesting photo with Fortes next to Cornscalas, is the Large horn tractrix and or the tweeter?

Does the Belle Bass Horn design approach Tractrix dimensions?

As to the question does a speaker have to rabidly adhere to the original design to be "Heritage"?

As a former product manager I would say no, the products were sold for their performance at an obtainable price. I don't see any problem with either bringing out a Cornwall 4, or Forte 3 etc.

As always there are lots of engineering trade-offs in any product.

    sys1.jpg

  14.

I would hold off on buying anything until you know for sure what the problem is.

Yes take photos of the units including the back labels, and the drivers so that we can read them.

On the LaScalas the grill need to come off, and you have to lay the speaker on it's front on the floor to get into the dog house, you might need a mirror and camera to take a picture of the back of the driver and you should also take pictures of woofer frame etc. Take pictures of all of your drivers and the crossovers so we can see them.

I think someone already suggested removing the wires from the bass driver and taking the Ohm reading again, check for dirty terminals.

Probably not a bad idea to check for a mouse hole in the cone when it's open.

You can buy a mechanics or heating and AC mechanics mirror on a telescoping wand for a few dollars, if one is now on the market with LED lights even better, you can photograph the mirror on macro or zoom with good to excellent results.

Scala was before, now I own a pair of Belle and then tend to sound left or more gain to left. i'll try to dig in, to find out, but connector good way to start. thanks

Bte, repair amp arrived today, so will have to change my setup, a good time to take measure again.

And no paper on the back of my Belle, so no serial number, but if like my Scala it could be punch in the wood somewhere?

What was the report from Service on the amp, what did they find??

  16. I think you should only be allowed to purchase the logos and grill cloth used on the Anniversary speakers if you bought a pair. As an owner of a pair of 70th anniversary Khorns I should be able to buy replacement parts. But to sell them to people who did not purchase 70th anniversary speakers is not right. It is not protecting the integrity of the anniversary speakers. Frankly it is not fair to the people who paid a large premium to own a pair of anniversary Heresy or klipschorn speakers. If you want the badge or cloth then pony up and buy an anniversary pair of speakers.

    Good points.

How much of the additional cost of the Anniversaries is the upgraded cloth, the upgrade veneer, the upgrade sealed rears? I'm guessing a lot given the cost of the veneers, cloth prices I have no idea.

The Special badges, are probably not much as any trophy shop can have them made and perhaps should remain unique as are your serial numbers.

As someone who has been in manufacturing my entire adult life, the product management, marketing, and sales side I am concerned with not only the survival of the Heritage line but it's continued success. I don't want the lines to go the way of the big Altecs and some other great audio products replaced by products where looks are put ahead of performance.

    My two cents.

  17. Black is black on the Grills.

Cane looks great and photographs very well.

I can't tell if I like the silver cloth from a photo.

Why not offer all 3 standard as options????

In the era of mass customization, the i-phone wrappers etc come to mind, why not offer 3 grills, and lot of veneer options like buying a car or truck?

Given UPS and Fed-X etc how long could it take to get a veneer customer order from a vendor, 5 days max??

The backs on the K-Horns should be enclosed on all of them, it is long overdue. Altec did this on the 820a-c back in  1951 when the product was introduced.

    My 2 cents

As far as the system balance being off, try switching the RCA cables on the back of the Emo inputs, then outputs to the amp, if that doesn't fix the problem, try switching the speaker cables to see if that works.

Be sure to put everything back after each step.

The is the box approach to trouble shooting, it will isolate the digital source, the DAC-preamp, the amp then the speakers one at a time.

When you identify the offending component tell us what you find.

Speculation is your amp is starting to fade on one channel but it is just a guess.

Ok an update, still not received my Bryston, but ordered type A crossover for my belle, great improvement, but, i took the time to check reading on tweeter squaker and woofer.

    this is my reading:

    Tweeters both side 6.8 ohms

    Squakers both side 10.9

Woofer left side 4.0 and right side 5.4?

The difference reading on woofer, is it significant to have impression that the sound is more left that right?

or this reading are in the spec and nothing to worry about for my Belle?

    regards

I haven't done a lot of speaker measurement and repair, but a 26% variance on the woofers jumps out as a problem to me.

For the price and quality of the speakers I would think a 1% variance on the coils would be the highest acceptable number.

So yes there is a problem. I would wait for others to chime in who know more about what they should read than me.

Then the question is, rebuild the drivers with new coils, or replace the woofers.

There are a number of threads on replacing the woofers, both expensive and inexpensive each with it's own merits.

How did you take the readings on the woofers, and can you photograph them with their labeling or print??

The ear is pretty good at detecting if a voice sounds lifelike, minus auto tune etc, and female voice still seems to challenge a lot of the engineers and equipment.

With theater stuff which is most of what I do, I've always had way more trouble with low male voices.  They can sound unnaturally boomy in the midbass region on lots of movies, sometimes even bleeding in through the subs.  Female voices usually largely bypass this range for the most part.  Seems to be nearly all due to the recording though, as some gruffy male voices sound perfectly natural on good recordings such as Mad Max.  I've never noticed this particular issue on music.

For some of the movies, at home and the theater agree the male voices are muddled and hard to hear, I assume a bad recording and mastering job or they didn't want to spend the money to dub over the "what did he say" sections. :)

  20. Agree, it would be nice to see more veneers as a standard offering options, perhaps an up-charge to cover the cost of the veneer and a no return policy on custom orders. Custom with up-charge should be offered on all veneers with all Heritage Models.

All custom orders should probably drop ship to the customer just to keep cost under control, how the units get into the house and get installed IDK. Not sure I would want them left on the front door step, which is where UPS left all of my McIntosh gear after a factory tune up a few years ago.

Cane Grills seem to be a unanimous no brainer.

Rosewood (unobtanium?) and Mahogany are no brainers too.

I don't know what the run rate was on Oak, but it would match a lot of furniture as would Maple. Would it match enough to get spouse approval for a pair of K-Horns in the Living Room? IDK

I understand that some veneers are easier to work with, and then there is pricing and availability.

    Grills: Cane or Regular

Veneers: Cherry, Walnut, Oak, Mahogany, Rosewood, Maple, and Teak which is easy to come by.

    My 2 cents......

Veneer on line catalog, more than I knew existed

    http://www.veneersupplies.com/categories/Raw__Wood__Veneer/Wood__Veneer__H__-__M/

Herzog seems easier to navigate, backed veneers is probably the ticket given the size of the speaker cabinets.

    http://www.veneeronline.com/home.aspx

If Herzog and their products are good, there is no reason that any of the backed veneers couldn't be sold by Klipsch as customs with paid up front no return policy. Zebra wood might be the deal closer for some customers.

This is in the heart of furniture country, probably one of several veneer guys in the area.
