  1. Mustang Guy, I like your way of thinking! I'm kind of at that point myself. I just want to do something with these drivers. I just acquired more stuff yesterday and had to play with it. My Dad gave me some components from a defunct set of Marantz HD-77 speakers he used to have, and I mated them up with one of my Sansui SP-1500 speakers. This was the result. Ugly as it may look, when powered by an Altec 1568A, it actually sounds surprisingly good. Just goes to show, you never know what will happen when you throw things together. -Jon
  2. Ryan, Thanks for the offer of help. I just may take you up on it! First, I have to figure out what on earth to try to make..lol. I just remembered, I also have a more modern Eminence 8" speaker. I forget the model, but it has a good size ceramic magnet on it. -Jon EDIT: Anyone have an empty Heresy cab? I'm thinking that could work perfectly. In time, I could find a T35 to fill in the HF. Then, I'd just need a crossover. Or, a cab for a 15" would allow me some more bottom end. -Jon
  3. Hey Guys, I've got some raw drivers, some of which are pretty decent quality, and was hoping to make a speaker out of them. I'll tell you what I've got, and you guys can tell me what you think. Here's the list, largest to smallest: 1. 15" Allen Bradley 8 ohm Alnico woofer. It's branded Lafayette, and was bought new in the box for $3 at an auction. Works perfectly. I tried it as a guitar speaker and it sounds pretty good, like a vintage Fender amp would have had back in the day. Don't know power handling, but it's probably not super high- around 50 watts, give or take. Has a big ol' Alnico magnet bell on it. 2. 12" 60's EV SRO Woofer- Alnico. 8 ohm. This thing is great. I used to use it in my '74 Fender Twin Reverb, along with a ceramic Jensen and it sounded awesome. 3. (2) JBL D-208 8 inch Alnico woofers. I rescued these from my Dad who was going to throw them out. They've been through a few moves and have been shuffled around a lot. Both have dings in the metal dustcaps, and one even has a puncture. At least one still works though, and seems to sound fine. Rugged little speakers! 4. University T-30 Horn Driver - 8 ohm, connected to a Klipsch K-700 horn. Bought at the same auction as the 15" woofer for $3. Works perfectly. Supposedly rated from 250-15000 Hz, but real world performance is likely less in each direction. So, there it is, that's what I've got. I don't have a box or a crossover. I'm guessing that the T-30 isn't going to go all the way up, so I'll need a tweeter? Or will it be ok on it's own? Given the odd crew I've got, what would you guys use? I'm thinking at a bare minimum, definitely the SRO and T-30, just not sure about the 15" and 8" drivers, and what kind of cabinet and crossover to use. Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  4. Hey guys, I found a pair of University 312 Diffaxle speakers for $125 and wanted to know what you guys thought. They're within driving range, so I could check them out before committing. They're together in one homemade cabinet that seems more appropriate for subwoofers than full rangers. So, I'd have to find appropriate cabs, which will probably increase cost. Unless someone here's got something knocking around they don't want that will work? What do you guys think of these speakers and the prospective deal? What kind of sound can I expect from these, and what cabs would you recommend? Thanks, Jon
  5. Hey Tom, Did you send the offer via PM? If so, I didn't get it, for whatever reason. Odd. -Jon
  6. Amp is still available. Taking offers!
  7. Hey Tom, Thanks for the info. As for price, I certainly wouldn't be asking a lot. I'm realistic about the condition the amp is in. I'm open to offers. -Jon
  8. EDIT: SOLD! Hey guys, I'm going through my old gear and came across an old Carver M500t amp that has power supply issues. It's not functional, and makes various popping / buzzing noises. I don't know what's wrong with it, but it will have to be repaired. I figured I'd throw a feeler out and see if anyone was interested in it, and what you thought it might be worth as is? This is one of the transfer function amps, and has the big meters on the front, which are pretty cool looking. It's rated at 250 w/ channel, and used to power my Dad's subwoofers for a few years. It used to work fine as long as it was left on, but whenever the power went out, the amp would have trouble settling in again. Eventually, it just stopped settling in altogether, and was replaced. What do you guys think? -Jon
  9. Top, showing slight dent. It's not bad, but I wanted to mention it.
  10. I lost my job, so I desparately have to sell some gear to raise money. I have a Parasound HCA-800 II amp for sale, which works fine. It's around 100 w/ch @ 8 ohms, or 250w bridged mono @ 8 ohms. I'm asking $150 for it. An unusual feature on this amp is the headphone output on the front! You just turn off the speaker switches, and use the volume controls to control the headphones. I've never seen another amp with this feature. It also has 1/4" inputs on the back in addition to the usual RCAs. It's in good shape overall, but there is a slight dent in the top cover, which is hard to see. However, the amp works perfectly, and has served me well in various capacities over the years. I'm probably going to be putting my Adcom preamp up for sale here too, the money's pretty tight right now. -Jon HCA-800II Specifications Continuous Power Output - Stereo 100 watts RMS x 2, 20Hz-20kHz, @ 8 ohms 150 watts RMS x 2, 20Hz-20kHz, @ 4 ohms Continuous Power Output - Mono 260 watts RMS, 20Hz-20kHz, @ 8 ohms Current Capacity 28.3 amperes continuous 40 amperes peak, up to 200msec. 11. True, I should get some pics up. I'll try to remember to do that this weekend when I'm home. -Jon
  12. I gather Parasound amps must not be too popular in Klipsch country? -Jon
  13. I'm selling my 2 Parasound HCA-800 II amps. I recently bought an Integra receiver and no longer need them. Both are in pretty good cosmetic condition, but not perfect. Average scratches for the age, still presentable. One has factory 1/4" line input jacks in addition to the RCAs. 100 watts / channel at 8 ohms, 250 w bridged at 8 ohms. I think they were made around 1992. -Jon
  14. Oh wow. If only I had my tax return, I'd be making a trip to Rhode Island asap. These are exactly what I'm looking for! -Jon
  15. I've been doing some searching online, and I'm shocked how expensive Klipsch speakers have become! I bought my LaScalas just a few years ago for $650, and sold them for $500. While they weren't perfect cosmetically, they were far from hideous. Now, I can't find a single pair under $1000, no matter how ugly, and most are $1500 and above. K-horns cost more than I paid for my last car. What gives? At this rate, I'll never have Heritage. -Jon
  16. Man, those are some awesome looking speakers! Wish they were closer, and that I had something to trade, cause they would look AWESOME in my room! Sadly, all I've got of value is guitar related stuff... Good luck with the sale. I'm shocked they haven't sold yet. -Jon
  17. Yeah, I've always liked the cymbals flat. They're vintage Zildjians, all older than I am, so I don't want to risk keyholing. -Jon
  18. Hey everyone, Thanks for the great advice. Well, I can cross Jubilees right off the list, as the budget will never support spending $8,000 on a pair of speakers. I've never had a set of K-horns, so I would be intrigued to try something different. Claude's setup looks awesome, if a bit big for my small digs. Plus, I have a feeling it will sell before I'm able to get the money together. I'm hoping to combine tax refund money with money from selling a 1966 Fender Pro Reverb guitar amp (real nice) to be able to buy my next speakers. Can anyone comment on what a setup like Claude's would sound like in my size room? -Jon EDIT: I forgot to mention, I do have a subwoofer. You can see it next to the Fried speaker in the picture. It's a 4x12" tower from a set of Infinity IRS Betas. It's fed by a Crest Pro amp in 4 ohm bridged mode for 650 watts. So, bass isn't an issue.
  19. Hey Guys, I'm really into playing drums, and finally got my own set, and it's a big one. I love playing along with CDs of Pink Floyd, ELO, Alan Parsons Project, etc. However, as much as I love them, my Fried speakers just can't keep up with the thunderous boom and massive crash of drums. I have Ludwig Vistalite drums, which are known to be louder than the average drum (as if they aren't loud enough already..lol). I use 15db reduction earplugs, so that should give an idea of relative volume. I'm looking for speakers that can comfortably accompany my drums at high volumes. Naturally, I thought of Klipsch, remembering how well my Cornwalls rocked out with a mere 100 watt amp. Nothing like efficiency! So here's my question: What speakers would you guys recommend to play at HIGH volumes (around 105 db or so) without strain, and have the clarity to cut through acrylic drums and massive vintage cymbals? Cornwalls again? Any other recommendations? I had La Scalas once before, I think they were from around 2000. However, to be honest, I liked the Cornwalls more, I thought the midrange was less aggressive, and the bass was fuller. However, in this case, I'm really looking for whatever will punch through the best, as these will be used almost exclusively for high volume rock and roll with drums. My room is only about 18 x 18 with a 10 foot ceiling, so as you can imagine, the drums do a good job of filling the space. Any thoughts? Thanks a lot! -Jon
