Did you ever get the 2nd Aegir?  I was wondering what your thoughts were if there was a big advantage when going from 1 to 2 ran in mono?

And then once that’s figured out, how does the Vidar compare?

    My current setup:

    Bluesound Node - Bifrost2 - Willsenton R8 - Cornwall IVs

Subwoofer: Golden Ear SupSub XXL - (ran speaker wire through a Russound ADP-1.2 Speaker-level to Line-level Adapter) **Don’t judge - I already had the sub in my living room for my HT setup. Lol. 🤣🤣. I drug it to the room with my stereo setup because I wanted to add a sub with the Cornwalls.

I’m very new to all of this and I wanted to get the Freya+ and start experimenting a little.

I’ve searched this thread looking for the final verdict on the best Cornwall IV/Schiit setup regarding powering them with either a:

Vidar vs. 1 Aegir vs. 2 Aegirs

    Thank you.

Nope - no thought of all running a second Aegir with my Cornwalls - one is plenty.   Very happy with it - but now my tube amps are back so it is sitting as backup.

    Best of luck!

I love tubes, but I do have limits I will pay for a given tube. I won't pay more than 30 for a tube rectifier, which limits me to everything but a 5AR4/GZ34. I simply refuse to pay more than that. Having said that, the JJ 5AR4 and Sovtek 5AR4 should work fine in most circuits.

I've blown too many cheap ones but my amps are at a pretty damn stable point now - so the cheap ones should last (I have some Sovtek and some really nice Phillips.)   I have 3 of the GZ37s - one which is pretty dark on the inside from the last amp melt down - but it still works - it is my backup now.

Well not exactly since our point is that cable lifters are wealth transfer devices and not true audio improvement devices. If you like them and enjoy using them do so. Just don't expect many others to think they work.

I found that marble cable lifters sound harder than mahogany cable lifters which sound more wood like.  I use 24kt Gold ones for certain music - good to have all different types.

  4. I have 77 Cornwalls - I replaced the Caps with a Crites kit - back when they were cheap - 40.00? - now the price has increased substantially.  I still have the oil can caps boxed up.   My speakers sound fantastic - but I made too many upgrades at once to be able to tell if they made a difference or not.

Wow - just wow - really loving this new little amp.   Just setup yesterday and listened to one album side - Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor - Vol 2 (side 1) - a favorite.   Great everything and the noise floor is reduced - in the 20's dB from a simple iPhone dB app (my tube amps from a recent test - no ground lifts - was in the 30's.)

    Great first impression for sure.

He uses the multi-section can capacitors which are notoriously known to be garbage, they have a high failure rate which is why I refuse to use them in anything anymore. These are mainly the CE manufacturer types, I have had decent luck with some labeled "Hayseed Hamfest" or something like that.

It's not worth the vintage look of the can style caps, or if you absolutely need to have it for restoration I'll gut the old one and stuff with high quality modern types. The modern radial electrolytic caps from the reputable big brands are inexpensive and vastly superior, it's best to design the amp around them vs an outdated vintage style can look. Bob Latino should know this and have a power supply board for these amps designed to take advantage of high quality inexpensive power supply capacitors. Those can style caps are like $60each, that's insane when $15 worth of Nichicon's would be a far better choice.

They are German made Authenticaps - I haven't heard of to many complaints as I've been following these amps for a while.

But probably would be good to get rid of it and replace it with something more robust - I'm all for that.

    Thanks.

If the brand of capacitor is not known, it could be a crummy Chinese cap. I'm not openly disparaging the Chinese, but they are well known to release inferior products that do not last, especially capacitors.

Bob uses good quality components - I know the few caps I did replace were all CDE.  I've never read any complaints about the quality of the kit parts - that is for sure.
