  1. Ray_pierrewit, Thanks for this timely post and sharing your KG4 purchase. I am also considering the KG4 as well as KG5 in the interest of space, to use along side our La Scalas. I have read both outstandingly enthusiastic and somewhat underwhelmed responses to these speakers, where some have indicated the KG4 (or KG5) is sorely lacking in midrange response. This description has not been my experience with any of the Klipsch speakers I have, and so am interested in what you think of them in comparison to the Heresy (which I am very familiar with). I definitely prefer the clarity and bright and clean detail for which Klipsch is very well-known, and I suppose a bit uncertain (or maybe unconvinced) by reviews that characterize them as not having these hallmark characteristics. However, I'm sure all of these reviews are providing honest opinions, and can respect and appreciate that fact. With the understanding that this hobby is highly subjective, do you find the KG4s to be so heavy and strong in bass response that good midrange and treble detail is veiled and dull? If you would share some of what you have found in that regard, I would appreciate it very much! Thanks, erik
  2. Cornman, Wow! Oris Horns! Very nice! What drivers are you using with them, and what do you have for LF? I'm using either Lowther DX4s or PM5As in rear loaded horns, and other Lowther users have told me I haven't heard these drivers at their best until I've heard them in good front horns. No doubt your system must sound amazing!
  3. I have a PrimaLuna line stage preamplifier that is exceptional in front of the right amplifier. PrimaLuna has been ignorantly bashed on occasion in the past simply because of that fact that they're not built close to home -- in Europe, Canada, or the U.S. However, they ARE designed in the west. If they were both designed and built in Europe or N. America, they would be much more expensive than they are. One thing I can say for certain: The craftsmanship of all PrimaLuna components is absolutely impeccable. I work on tube equipment all the time and can say that I have rarely seen workmanship nearly as good as theirs. Not only that, quality control is very tight, and it both shows and....well....also sounds. I mentioned above that my PrimaLuna preamp sound incredible with the right equipment. That's something that can be said for many hi-end products. This particular preamp has a highish output impedance, and it's at it's best when used with shorter lengths of interconnect and amplifier with higher input impedances. At least that's what I have found, so am just speaking from my own experience and observations. I find it to have a richer rather than analytic sound, and it sounds particularly 'right' with an amplifier that tends to be more on the cool or 'bright' side of neutral. My wife often asks, "Can we use the PrimaLuna with the Hafler power amp again?" She has the lingo down! In addition to all of that, their fit and finish is really amazing at the price point. They look awesome!
  4. Thanks. That's one of the main reasons I've been considering them. Had I space for two subwoofers (even one is sort of an issue), that would be my answer.
  5. ACV92 A great response, thank you! You seem to be thinking along the same lines I am with regard to the KLF.. The oak KG 5.5s here do looking to be in really nice condition. We (I) are looking for a pair of speakers that do justice to hard rock and heavy metal, and while the La Scalas can obviously play very loud, we are missing some lower octave info. that's important to the music. If not for some space constraints, I wouldn't at all mind a pair of subwoofers as wazzzer mentioned.
  6. That is very good advice Gnote. Thanks!
  7. wuzzzer, That much too high, huh? Wow, ok, I'm glad I asked - thanks for the heads up! Can't argue with your advice on a good sub for that much either!
  8. Hello all, My experience with Klipsch has been with the larger Heritage speakers, and only know what the KGs look like in terms of cabinet and speaker configuration. In another thread I mentioned my interest in KLF 20s or 30s, but just now found an apparently mint pair of oak KG 5.5s for sale a couple of hours from us. Up until now we have been using our La Scalas for more demanding music in terms of bass response, but even as great as the La Scalas are for many genres of music, they just do not have particularly deep bass response. If there are any of you out there who have heard both earlier editions of the La Scala as well as KG 5.5s, would you please comment on what you remember, if you can, about some of the differences between the two? For those of you who might own KG 5.5s, I vaguely remember reading that they are significantly lacking in terms of clear and crisp midrange and HF response. To me that just seems questionable, based on what I know of Klipsch's fundamental sound qualities; I just don't think (but also don't really know for sure) that Klipsch would release a speaker lacking in those two qualities that are usually hallmarks of the brand. I am looking for clear and prominent midrange and treble that are supported by good, solid, and deep bass. There is music to which I listen that I KNOW has not only substantial bass, but also low bass, and I'm wondering if the KG 5.5s will deliver at both frequency extremes. The seller is asking $650.00 which doesn't sound too unreasonable if the speakers really are in mint condition. Does that sound right? Lastly, are the KGs finished in real wood veneer or a wood grain laminate? It's not a critical issue by any means. I'm just curious. These really do look pretty cool, and are in very good shape. Much thanks in advance for any thoughts shared. em
  9. Based on the greatly appreciated responses of other forum members, I've decided to put this sale temporarily on hold for the time being. Some contributors to this thread have multiple pairs of Klipsch speakers and so are familiar with their different sonics, and as JohnJ mentioned above, the Forte' might be exactly what we are looking for -- or the KLF 20 or 30; or RF 7s (first edition because of what I've read (not personally heard) about their more pronounced or sharper mid and high frequency response. Of course a really clean pair of Heresies, preferably earlier versions, are also on the table. I know what they sound like and really like them. In the past, when topics like this have come up on this forum or elsewhere, I have always suggested to others that they compare for themselves before making a decision. I need to take my own advice and make an effort to do the same. If there are readers of this thread who have not posted but have an opinion they might like to share personally, PLEASE feel free to send me a PM or two or three or four! I would greatly value and love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance! em
  10. All of that is very impressive! As a former drummer and present dabbler, Klipsch was the only speaker, when I was searching, that got the full thwack of a snare drum right. They are so often described as 'bright' or as a party speaker, though professional reviewers have recently published extremely positive comments about a number of different models. And when we had Klipschorns, snare drum and everything else was just amazing. So! Thanks again for your interest and positive remarks, John.
  11. JohnJ, When you mentioned your Forte's, I for some reason didn't catch the IIIs. Wow, thanks for that! Just in terms of space, I think they would have been perfect. And you have the boxes too. That was totally reasonable, and not 'conniving in any way.
  12. Schu, I definitely appreciate the offer, and I think those have great potential. While I'm sure they sound great, I'm not sure I would feel comfortable offering $600 for them, and I guess that's really more along the lines of what I have in mind.
  13. So. I truly LOVE these La Scalas. To me they are both amazing-looking and sound incredible. I have other more important considerations right now, and so selling them with the option of giving the buyer the use of a smaller pair of (Klipsch Heritage, Legend, or possibly other) speakers as part of the transaction would benefit both of us. I would like to open this to including a pair of Heresies as part of a transaction, and will allow up to $600 for a clean pair with only one dust cap smashed in on the woofers The balance would then be $900. For how we are listening to music right now, Heresies would be more than enough. Again, I just can't think about shipping the La Scalas. It's going to be enough for me just to get them into the back of our Tahoe. But I'll drive within a 200 mile radius or so to deliver. Sorry about that. ***Please Note: This post has been edited in the interest of brevity and in order to stay more on topic.
  14. JohnJ, I also wanted to add that your opinion definitely counts greatly! Don't underestimate that. All your ideas about upgrades were good ones.
  15. Schu, Yes, (partial trade option) since KLF 20s are are usually not considered to be equal to the LS in a monetary sense. I would love to have a pair as a big part of a transaction for my La Scalas though!
  16. Hdbrbiilder: You needn't hate telling me any of that. I said why I called them Designer La Scalas. Everything else you mentioned regarding veneer is excellent info. to post. John J. I suspect I should have said, and maybe I did, that KLFs would be considered as a very significant PORTION of a trade. And Fortes are awesome! Thanks too for your advice for upgrades to the LSs. I appreciate that.
  17. Schu, I can post more pictures later. Sides and tops are without flaws. The one on the top back was shown. Grain on sides has a horizontal orientation and really sort of unremarkable as far as wood grain goes, but hey! There 100% Klipsch La Scalas and Gluten Free!
  18. Thank you both! I'm glad you got your Heresies! If I was ever in the position to have to choose one, and only one pair of speakers to live with on this side of the soil, I would quickly ask for a pair of Klipsch Heresies Is, II, or IIIs -- PLEASE! Ever since I first heard them in college but couldn't afford them, I've loved them. I WILL have another pair, and this time hold on to them for good (which is really what I should do with this great pair of La Scalas.....) We all have our own seemingly good reasons for selling components, but sometimes it's just better to just not. I'm glad you guys who have responded like the pictures!
  19. ...Let's see if this works. Left top with x-over. Haven't been using these but rather my own design. These AA networks are fine, though I would say could do with a re-capping. Type55V solder terminal, thought uses the K77M, not alnico.
  20. Having trouble getting others to load for some reason. Give me a tube amp schematic and I'm ok -- not so much with this, obviously! The back are in the same condition as the front! No bashed corners, no gouges. A very small piece of veneer issue at on the top very back edge. See picture Happy to fill, sand, and re-coat the entire top of cab if so desired.
  21. WillyBob: Thank you very much for your straightforward and refreshingly focused response. Here's what's happening right now: I'm working like crazy to get the final coats of gel stain and spar varnish on our front door so I can put the deadbolt back in. And my wife is kindly and gently eager for me to get it done as well. Promise to post images today. I can say that the cabinet are very good to excellent condition; crossovers are also very very good, but have a fine layer of accumulated dust on the top that I haven't blown and cleaned off yet. The grilles are perfect from the front, and noticed yesterday when I took them off that the original Klipsch fabric has over time come unglued in places, and the previous owner used black electrical tape to try to hold it down. An easy fix. They are not sequential serial numbers, but the cabinets are only about two number apart, and were probably waving to one another on the assembly line. Pictures will tell the tale, and I WILL do that today at some point, maybe after lunch. You are gracious to consider giving me time to change my mind. There are some who could care less about that, and would want them NOW!!! So thank you.
