  1. These are some absolutely incredible amps right here. I rebuilt a pair of these for Wayman Tisdale's Studio right here in OK! Sad loss that was. One of the greatest human being's there ever was on this planet.

These amps knocked my socks off when I heard them.

If you don't get local pickup and consider shipping these, let me know.

    Thanks

    Paul

  2. The set is killer good. The amp more than doubles down into 4 ohms, as its power rating at 8 ohms is very conservative. A real beast of an amp. The preamp is no slouch and gets allot better with some upgrades.

Around $300-$500 for the pre is about right. The amp varies wildly, anywhere from $650-$1.5K. The nicer they are, the more on the high sides of these prices they will likely be.

A completely restored set has massive potential to bring big bucks, but I have never seen fully restored ones of these sold.

  3. Yep. All passive cooling, and likely "just enough" heatsink. They designed it pretty well with regards to keeping the caps away from the output section. I haven't seen any heat damage anywhere.

Waiting on a couple more relays to finish the second. These take 8 12v relays between the two of them. I am working on a SX-5590 right now while I wait for the parts.

  4. Dude, I work on solid state. You miss that part? I have hooked up every solid state amp you can think of damn near, and the VRD's do just fine.

Yes, solid state is punchier, NO QUESTION. That is what it does best. However, I get more focused and tuneful bass with the tubes in my system.

Sensitivity of the speaker means very little. It is how easy of a load the speakers present to the amplifier. The Pearl's are some of the least demanding speakers on the planet, sensitivity be damned.

I listen to solid state in the hottest summer month's. I like solid state. But I love tubes for critical listening.

  5. It is transparency, emotional content, palpability.... McIntosh gear sounds great, don't get me wrong, especially the newer Mac gear. But tubes just get you closer. Closer to the real IMO. This coming from a guy that works on Solid State for a living.

  6. You can ask him, but I don't think so....

He really should offer a group buy, maybe at a discounted rate so that he can get more of the pieces that are needed. These preamps are so worth having, so it is a shame not being able to get them.
