  1. 5) Apparently a small minority desire realism in performance effects, including soundstage, real concert dynamics, freedom from noise on the recording medium, freedom from all kinds of distortion including especially modulation distortion, and a realism in the soundstage that you actually hear when you go to a live acoustic concert.

I would also add that the goal typically changes for individuals based on the type of music played and the environment it is played in.

This is actually a complex subject.

Yeah!! Realism. Freedom! Its not only complicated, its difficult to achieve and appreciate.Geeked

I keep hearing comments about surface noise such as clicks and pops. Most of my LPs are dead quite. I do run every one, even new LPs, through my Keith Monk cleaning machine prior to playing for the first time.

So if you have noise get a good cleaning machine and enjoy noise free LPs.

  3. Like ive mentioned before,,The 402 and Jube are but an unfinished product, shoved into the Pro cimema division,,,The Hobbiest Klipsch members have pulled it into the Two way home unit,,With many variations

    Moron speaks again!!

  4. Chris, you're sounding a lot like a young engineer that thinks this
"new found" dynamic range measurement somehow describes all aspects of sound quality, and now everything becomes a nail to be hit with this dynamics hammer.

I can't believe this is coming from the Grasshopper! Now that is funny.

  5. That statement is why I like to keep the signal chain analog and very simple.

What's simple about using a voltage to guide cutting a groove to wiggle a needle to wiggle a coil that requires a dramatic EQ curve to compensate for?

That, to me, sounds like a very complicated process.

If we're going to talk about the echelon of analog, then I think we need to be talking about reel to reel...

Actually that does not sound complicated to me at all, unlike turning that squiggly music into Xs & 0s then back again.[6]

  6. Vinyl played through an excellent tube preamp to digital xover to 300B SET amps to bi amped Jubilee is much closer.

In my post above I was wondering how much of what I heard through Rigma's system was the preamp/amp vs the analog crossover. I thought it was the best sound I heard compared the solid state amps and digital crossovers but was thinking what I was liking was mostly the great pre/amp (even the brand of tubes was top notch) as opposed to the crossovers, which I felt were only making a minor difference. If I am understanding you correctly in the quote above you would agree with that?

To follow up on that, what would you say would be more of an improvement on the Jubes, TAD drivers or going to analog crossovers?

    Thanks

    Travis

Travis that is a tough one. Both were much better to my ears but if I had to make a choice it probably would be the TADs.

  7. No arguments here. In fact, I'm currently in favor of keeping the signal in the digital domain all the way from the disk player until it needs to come out of the preamp output terminal (including digital loudspeaker crossover processing) or even the power amp output terminal (i.e., via an integrated amplifier with crossover processing). I think that Art (artto) has a unit that effectively does that and he is singing the praises of that unit, the name of which escapes me presently, but IIRC this is a two-channel-only unit.

It's difficult to do 5.1 or 7.1 in the analog-only domain Indifferent - and I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't want to go there if I could. Two-channel has become the sole application domain for analog-only source material (e.g., vinyl), and the new analog recordings are, as I understand it, derived from digital "masters".

    Chris

P.S. Hey Marion, what were the last dozen recordings that you've listened to?

I don't remember 12 but here are the latest I recall: All LPs.

    Lightnin Hopkins - Lightnin - 1960

Ben Webster - At The Renissance - 1960

    Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor - 1960

    Dave Brubeck - Time Out - 1959

Coleman Hawkins - The Hawk Relaxes - 1961

Buddy Guy & Junior Wells - Going Back To Acoustic - 1981

    Ray Brown - Soular Energy - 1984

    Van Morrison - Moon Dance - 1970

  8. Cask,

Here is my 2 cents based on my experience with my system.

Vinyl played through an excellent tube preamp to 300B SET amps to Jubilee with passive network beats CDs every time.

Vinyl played through an excellent tube preamp to digital xover to 300B SET amps to bi amped Jubilee is much closer.

I believe to truly compare vinyl to CD you must maintain a pure analog signal from start to finish. If you convert the analog vinyl signal to digital you have lost the advantage of the original analog source and then you are no longer comparing analog to digital.[;)]

  9. Mike thanks for the write up I thought it was very good. It seems the more I get into this hobby the more I like to read about different things.

Thanks duder1982.......All I can say is it was my listening experience along with a friend I had invited over during part of the listening test(he owns many amplifiers from McIntosh MC225, Marantz 8b, Cary CAD805c as well as Krell and McIntosh ss amplifiers so he has a good range of amplifiers to compare with) and he also expressed the same perceptions and conclusions when we discussed our thoughts about the comparisons. I also have another good friend(whose listening opinions I respect greatly) that tried the F3 against his 300b tube amps and he said that he and his wife both thought the 300b amp was the better amplifier in their system and again there are variables at play that "might"explain why we came to different conclusions and I hope to hear the F3 in his system soon for myself which should be interesting and part of the fun for me anyway.

    miketn

That be me Mikey is talking about. Yes, my wife and I both think the 300B is
definitely more musical than the F3 and it only took a few minutes to come to that conclusion, though we did listen much longer. I do have a very different setup
than Mikey, no digital other than CD player for one thing.

    I have
    heard
Mike's system prior to the F3 and it sounded great and I am sure if he
says the F3 sounds as good or the same as his 2A3s it does in his
    system, he knows his stuff.[Y]

I can't explain why we have different opinions other than
our unique systems or maybe even taste. I will say the F3 is the best
SS I have heard and I will be using it for the front Jubilees in movie
    mode.
