I agree. In the past I’ve liked to stay at 1v or less. But this works fabulously. I have all the usable gain I need and dynamics are off the chart. I’m very happy with this amp.

And did you confirm what he set it up at? I bet it's not 1.5 volts to full power. If he knew you were going passive he surely adjusted accordingly.

  2. Pretty hard to design a passive preamp that's noisy! No gain = no noise... pretty simple. Much of the noise you experience with an active tube or SS preamp is caused by a system mismatch. Using the wrong preamp with an amp or the reverse. One of the largest headache of putting together a separates system is picking components that play well together. I personally have never liked passive preamps but LP's is a big part of my serious listening...

Before the invention of the printing press.

Heck it makes the manuals I did for my products fresh and modern! I love the hand drawn schematic and other drawing that I bet a dime to a dollar were penciled in by the audio god himself! Cool stuff!

  4. Mark,

Good to see you are strolling in here now and then! I have a blast from the past piece of Paragon System E documentation (User Manual, Service bulletin on balance control with instructions, hand drawn grounding scheme diagram and full Schematic) I bet you'd love to look over and forward to people that might contact you about the System E. I swear the hand drawn and written pages is your hand writing.  Shoot me an email with your current email and I'll send it back to you.  craig@nosvalves.com

  5. If working when you last used 18 years ago the chances are darn good if you use a Variac and start them up slow like over a 24 hour period starting at 50VAC for 4 hours, 60 for 4 and so on. I bet they come up just fine. Do clean the tube sockets and pins in case they have oxidized. Caig Deoxit is all I recommend you use.

20 years is nothing to those components. Unlike the above poster the one thing I would replace are the Jensen PIO caps Paper in Oil caps built like those do not do well after sitting unused for 20 years. If they were Hermetically sealed it'd be different but they are not. To keep the sound the same as it used to be, find another PIO cap made today.

                                       Good Luck Craig

I have the exact same paragon amp and power supply as in the  photo above. Who can look over and test the stuff to make sure nothing needs to be replaced ? I am in the Portland Oregon area.

Send it, I'll fix it right up! All they usually need is the power supply rebuilt. check my website for contact info www.nosvalves.com

    Craig,

I'm glad that you are still around and "kickin".

Now that I am in my 60's I can relate to health issues.  I guess that I am more apprehensive than you as I don't believe that I will ever be the same as my younger days.

Well, I don't believe I'll be performing like I did in my 20's or 30's but I plan to keep busy with some work and hopefully lots of fun. As the saying goes "start living or start dying"

Craig, I am soooooo glad to learn that you are still alive and kicking?!!

I own a Scott 299-B that I use quite frequently but it has never been recapped or restored.

When you get back on your feet I would like to send it your way . . .

You asked if anyone remembered Mobile Homeless?

    Blindman,

Is your handle true? If not there must be a story behind it! If it is true, you are very resourceful!

Why don't you plan on shipping it in late February or early March. Please move this to email craig@nosvalves.com I do not want to get in trouble with Klipsch here. They may not mind as I'm not a competitor. I'm not sure who to contact about the can and can't for me. I used to be very much a preferred vendor around here. I have that No BS Paul Klipsch attitude LOL!!

PS folks my Knee has been spectacular! It's just amazing what a good Surgeon can do!!

I suppose then that Kenwood and Marantz are similar in nature of reliability and build quality?

    Steve

👍  Yes sir in my opinion. Marantz has always been a favorite of mine in the tube and 70's SS era. The problem is it commands extreme prices, Kenwood not so bad,,

Now I wonder I don’t have any history with these amps but to me Kenwood amps vs. Harmon/Kardon amps - I always wondered similar ratings and such, which has the better build, reliability and such?

I hate to say it because it will rattle a few feathers but to me with my experience Kenwood is hands down the better in every respect of the two. IMHO not even close. HK around here has a big following because of one very vocal Klipsch I believe ex-employee and forum member.

PS: IMHO Marantz is/was way better too!

I would recommend staying with solid state (even though it pains me being a tube guy) because you will not find any tube amplifier worth buying for a few hundred.

I'd agree with the above. I used a few different vintage Kenwood/Trio like in the links I provided in the Livingroom and my Study when I ended up with 4 grandchildren running around here. All but one room is back to tubes now. But anything tubed in the couple hundred is going to either be a headache or sound like dung. These Kenwood/Trio sound pretty darn good and if you're into vinyl have a decent phono section. I was lucky though I found 2 decent examples at an estate sale for $40 each. DO make sure whomever you buy one from warranties it works in all respects as it should. I am not at all affiliated or know the people selling them in the links just showing you examples.

Holy cow!  ☺️  Craig going digital. ▶️  I remember you scolding the piss out of me years ago for that.    Imagine feeding D to A audio into your NBS and VRDs.  All I can say is it won't hurt them.  It can sound really awesome actually.  🤣  👍⏭️

    Uummmm,

Let's not get excited! I am backing up my treasured Vinyl collection! I am not "Going Digital" My life would not be complete without a few ticks, hiss and a skip now and then. Vinyl just sounds better!!

Shannon Parks has a new vinyl dsp called the waxwing... full digital output (coax and optical), but I dont think it has a software package, not sure. JRiver would do the job for software. There is a mobile phone app for control.

Shannon Parks is a heck of a good guy! 👍

    This is very true

A lot of modern mastering for CDs has also been terrible.

I think the music industry is still figuring out how to record - period.

    Marvel,

Many recording engineers have CD recording quality figured out, Thing is the money men paying the bills that is not the main concern. They want the CD's they bankroll to play hotter than the rest on the radio or streaming. More profits through hearing damage!

Which tonearm do you use with your DL103R?

I normally use my 103R on a upgraded Rega RB300 on my older SOTA Sapphire which has had some type of electrical failure that I haven't dug into it yet. So I'm currently using it on my really cool vintage JVC QL-Y5F which has every tweaker gadget known to man. Really versatile and surprising good turntable... The best kind since I scored for like $200

Craig... this may be of interest. It's from the forums for Ardour, a powerful DAW package. Someone asked about recording vinyl to digital.

    https://discourse.ardour.org/t/digital-riaa/88277

Again, I would say you should use a good phono preamp into the line input on the Scarlett.

Marvel thanks and trust me I have multiple top notch phono sections with my/Mark Deneen's being my go to... Interestingly I'm currently using huge rack size box CJ phono pre that sounds spectacular with my Denon D103R scary quiet background for LPs
