  1. Claude,

We tried the Beyma's, JBL 2482's, K-69 with the K-402's. I am setting up a MiniDSP to try with them and I will post my results soon. I'm fighting with Building Standards at the moment and it is consuming a bunch of time.......Fighting isn't the right word...."Detailed Discussions" would better fit the situation........For some reason, they like to Drag things out....guess they figure you will give up......!

  2. Chris,

I have to agree about the demands placed on the system playing this recording. It is one of the five best I have in my collection. It will truly put any system to the TEST.......! From top to bottom, the Toccatas are journey in constant motion.....

Great Choice and Biggs had full command of ANY keyboard he chose to sit and play at,

    W. C.

  3. Eagle,

Please also include the Onkyo line of receivers, as there are some great deals on them out there. We use two PR-5508 processors and are very happy with the results. If it makes any difference, they replaced Sony STR DA5300ES receivers, as we have a few amps that we switch between on various systems.

The others that you have listed are also great choices. Onkyo IS Integra....same components internally and a pretty large price difference...FWIW

  4. We have been out of town for most of the month of September, with very limited Internet access and I just ran across this in my email alerts.

I wanted to take a minute to thank Joe for the warm comments and we are certainly happy that we could help him in acquiring his KPT - KHJ - LF Jubilee Base Bins and K 402 Horns. He has gained another friend in the Audio World and it was a true pleasure to deal with him. I must make one correction, as the actual manufacturing time for the Jubilees was four weeks from time of order to shipment. In working with Joe and him knowing that I was out of town when they arrived in Charlotte, we were able to shuffle things a bit, We actually postponed the shipment date to him by ten days, to accomodate my and his schedule for final delivery. This really worked well for both of us and allowed him to finish a few things that he was working on. Having a great customer to work with makes the transaction all that much easier and our Freight Delivery Company is one of the best in the Country. He received "Tail Gate Delivery" to his home and it went without a flaw.

If anyone has any questions about what we can offer, please email or PM me.

  5. Fastslappy,

I haven't been hiding as I just returned from being in SC, for most of September. We have finished all of our FlyingEvents for the year and I am finally back in Charlotte.

As to the sound, the K 402's with the TAD Drivers are an excellent choice to go with the Jubilee Base Bins. It is as clean, clear and crisp as any Top End, Two Way Speaker out there. They are truly as good as anything that I have heard, as long as they are set up properly. Some of the drawbacks are; the cost and future availability of the TAD Drivers. There are other 2" Drivers that work well with the K 402's, including the two offered from Klipsch. Klipsch has spent years developing the Top Ends for the Cinema Jubilee's and any of their offerings will do justice in a Home theater setup. IMHO, there are other drivers that are equal to the TAD's, at a lower cost. The Electronic Crossover (DX-38) is personally not "My Cup of Tea", but that does not, by any means, say they sound any less impressive than Passive Two Way Crossovers. They are just plain becoming much harder and expensive to find. For several reasons, I plan to stay with the Martinelli's and Passives in my personal setup. Dave's Eliptrac 400's are also an excellent choice to mate up with the Jubilee Base Bins. I personally like the Beyma CP 750ND Drivers, but the Klipsch line of drivers also does an excellent job, of reproducing the Top End.

Coytee is right, as the Acoustamass was a very close SECOND in the testing............[6]

  6. Chris,

The Marantz should push the two 7's and the 64 just fine. did you get a manual with the receiver? Are you sure that they are wired correctly? if you have the manual, there is a Reset process that you should be able to find. if you don't have the manual, you can download it from the Web. Check your wiring first, then try for the reset. if the problem still persist, you can call Customer Service at marantz and they should be able to help. You may have purchased a Bad receiver, but i truly doubt it. You will probably find it is something simple. be sure that none of your speaker wires are shorting out to any metal around the connections. Sometimes stray copper strands are hard to see. Sounds like something is shorting.......

  7. endover,

Do you know any General Contractors or have a friend that might? They would know who would be able to provide you with the most cost efficient job on your driveway. Here in Charlotte, they "Grind" up the streets all the time and process the "Millings" in place. On projects that we have worked on, the Millings provided an adequate surface and looks like new asphalt when applied correctly. The quality of work provided by the Paving Contractor is the Key. The secret to a good asphalt job is the Binder that is placed under the two inch cap of asphalt. If the Binder is not thick enough or the sub base is not compacted propeerly, any asphalt will fail. The reason the Millings work so well is; It is placed usually over a foot or more of existing asphalt (that has built up over time) so the sub base is extra thick on existing roads. Again, the quality of the Contractor is the key, not so much the materials used. It is a true shame that MOST of the quality has gone from contracting jobs these days, as the normal is now; get in, get the money (and run) and do it as cheaply as possible.......most cities have one or two reputable Paving Contractors that everyone knows and uses and then the multitude of crews that work out of their Vans or Station Wagons with three hundred ladders on top, running the residential neighborhoods.....Be sure that you get a Warranty and Guaranty of the job in writing, from whomever you choose to do the work..

  8. Mark,

I was going by the recess around the edge and it just looks a little tsller to me. I have six TSCM tops that look identicle to the one pictured. There were several different tops. I guess the only true way of knowing is to measure or look at the Jackplate/speaker terminals......I think someone said..."Never say never, when it comes to Klipsch" Your lower picture is of an HPS 525 (John Allen), not a split La Scala (LSI)

  9. Scrappy,

If you want to strip the paint, go to Home Depot and get two pints of Klean Strip. It may take a gallon before you are finished, so judge for yourself, as it is much cheaper by the gallon. It applys by pouring it on and spreading with a very cheap paint brush, Let it sit and the old paint will start to bubble and seperate from the wood. It may take several applications, depending on the amount of paint, but you will learn very quick. Wash up is with water and have plenty of rags and a putty knife onhand. You will be sanding soon......Wear gloves as this product is very caustic and will burn the hell out of your skin.

Don't worry, the veneer, it can be repaired.

  10. Do you plan to install the cables as you go or are you wanting to install the raceway and then pull the cables in? When you get near 360 degrees total in bending, it becomes almost impossible to pull the wires in, even with a Fish Tape or Pull String. if you are running over 100 feet, it is best to plan for a couple of Junction boexs along the way (If Pulling the Cable In). the Flexible Raceway should work fine for the curved wall as long as you can get the proper fittings for it. Exposed raceway work can be very challenging......

  11. OK, results are in, final tabulation is done…………..First, let me tell you what I have been doing for the last two days along with everything else that is going on here and in SC. I should be on the road right now, but I am waiting on a freight shipment to show up so I can take it with me.

Speaker Set Up; Left Corner: Golden Jubilee with a Martinelli 22” Horn driven by a Beyma CP750ND on a two way passive crossover.

Right Corner: Commercial Jubilee KPT-KHJ-LF Jubilee with a K-402 Horn driven by a TAD 4002 on an active DX-38 crossover, loaded with Roy’s settings, for that combination.

I drove these for the first test with a S. A. E. A502, 200 watt per channel Solid State Amplifier. We played these for about five or six hours and then it was time to change over to Tubes. For Tube Amplifiers, we used QuickSilver 300B’s for an additional seven or eight hours, playing various CD’s, DVD’s, some pre-recorded Organ on a Studer 807 and even FM Radio. Output Channel One of the DX-38 was to the LF Cabinet Jubilee and Channel Two fed the K-402/TAD.

    Listening Results:

After about twenty total hours of listening SS/Tubes, we found that the sound quality was as good as the Martinelli Horn/Beyma combination. While the smaller Martinelli was a bit more directional (smaller Sweet Spot) the K-402 had a room filling quality that allowed you to move freely around the backside of the room and still feel the clarity and preciseness’ of the chosen source. Instrument sounds came from the location of where they should be in a Live performance and vocals were not tiring or harsh, just clear and crisp. The five man, Northfield Four Quartet, singing “Roll Jordan Roll”, A’ Capella, is just something to behold, as it is truly a moving piece of music and is a very good test of the system. I also have another DVD of a group called “Rocapella” that does some awesome stuff….! R to R Organ stuff was stunning and I swear that they dug deeper than I have heard before….maybe it is the new recorder, who knows. It absolutely sounded Live and I found NO fault with the active setup, that I can honestly report. The Tube amps gave the sound a more Mellow/Warm quality, which is to be expected. I truly believe SS LF Base Bin and Tube HF Top is the way to go.

The last couple of hours, we switched sides and put the K-402 left and the Martinelli on the right side, to be sure that we were being fair in our testing. Finally, we put the K-402’s on both left and Right sides of the room. The only drawback to the K-402 is its size and being able to aesthetically fit it into a sound room or Home Theater, pleasingly. It could be hidden behind the screen or dressed up in some type of nice enclosure, to give it more WAF appeal. We don’t have that problem as the Dogs really do not care about the looks. The only drawback to the DX-38 is the setup time and probably its future availability. Once it is set, you can forget about it. I am also sure that there are other processors out there that will do an equally good job of the DX-38, but it is what we used for this test. I like Dave, would have a hard time picking the difference in an A/B Test, if I was stationary. Moving around the sound stage would certainly give away the smaller horn, as its Sweet Spot is much smaller than the 402’s. Overall, I would have to rate the K-402 as, as good a sound, as I have ever heard from Horns of any kind. I am sure that there may be other horns out there that are as good, as these two, but I have yet to hear them. The K-402 can produce much more than we ask from it, for these tests. I was pleasantly surprised that it sounded that good and the Horn is everything that it has been reported to be. As far as I am concerned, I would certainly have NO problem in recommending it as a top for the Cinema Jubilee, in a two way active or passive setup. Please remember, that this is purely MY opinion and your mileage may vary…..! Will I go active from here on out? Nah, as I am perfectly satisfied with the Passive setup that I use daily, but the K-402/TAD’s will be available for auditioning, to anyone that would like to hear them.

I am leaving for SC later on this afternoon and will not return until September 10th. There are two other things that I would like to try with the K-402’s when I get back. One, to try the Beyma 750’s on them and to drive them with the MiniDSP that we have borrowed. But my time is running short and I have to get on the road, very soon….!

  12. Sorry Guys,

No music or testing today.............My DSL connection went down somtime during the night and I have been fooling with AT&T most of the day. The good thing is........We have upgraded our connection speed and we have a new HS Modem. The old one just plain wore out after about ten years of constant use.

    More to follow tomorrow............

  13. Sunday Afternoon Report:

Still playing CD's and enjoying......! Clapton/Frampton.........all is good. They (DX-38/Cinema Jubilee's/K-402/TAD 4002's) sound very good and the DX-38 is dialed in perfectly. At this point....Room Filling and Clean are the best Terms I can come up with. We will be more dtailed in the final report......It's still a BIG *** Horn......![6]

Tomorrowe will be with Tubes, so I will reserve final comparison, until after I have listened to them on some QuickSilver 300B's......These are what I am using with the Martinelli's and Eliptrac's, for normal listening. Will probably keep the base Bins on Solid State.

Claude....The Five Man Quartet is awesome......! Hotel California....well, I don't need to say anything at all...just pure Classic......Cathedral Organ is out of this world on Tape.....

    More to follow..................
