  1. OK... Thanks Cask05... I think I know what you mean.... but I can see, there is much to be learned here.... ----J.L.
  2. Could someone explain the DR Database website to me in brief?? Is the higher the number for each of the three categories equal to a better sounding CD?? ----J.L.
  3. This is one of the great reasons for joining this forum. All the input that its members bring!!!! It just gives so many opinions to a certain topic that I would never get from where I live!!!! (out in the boonies) Most people around where I live wouldn't give a crap about good sound from their music. Just as long as it's clear, that's about it... And my mistake on the PureTone... I forgot that it had to be re-named as Pono. I did read that part of the book, but in MY middle age, I forgot.... Thanks for the correction. I must have pretty good ears though, as I wince when hearing an emergency vehicle go by with its siren blaring. I take my ear safety very seriously!!!!!!! I ALWAYS wear earplugs for whatever type of powered equipment I operate. I'm afraid that what I hear and what everyone on the forum hears, may be two different things. Sound is so complicated.... I would love to hear music (of any type) through any of the forum's member's ears, but that is impossible. I bet what I think is an absolutely great sounding CD, Neil Young and many of my Klipsch Forum compadres would say is only so-so or even worse. I wish I could come and listen to one of your great systems with your Klipsch speakers, as I'm sure I would be impressed. To ramble a bit, I remember when I was young and went to a very nice audio shop in Corning, NY called Chemung Electronics, there was music coming from the upstairs of the shop and I said to the guy downstairs "that sounds like Fleetwood Mac playing up there!!!!!".... he said to go on up and listen, and I did... wow!!!!!!!!.... what a sound!!!!! It really did sound like a live performance of Fleetwood Mac!!!! I couldn't believe it..... I was already a young audiophile at the time, but couldn't believe what I was seeing at that store... AND what I was hearing!!!!!!!.... I was in love!!!!!!!!!!!! I know my system is nowhere near that system, but I do like the sound of mine.... it makes me happy.... and I would love to hear what PONO would sound like through my system!!!!.... I just wonder a little now after what has been said, if I would be one of the ones that would hear the difference or not???..... Would love to find out though.... I would think too that ole Neil must have suffered some sort of hearing loss after all the years of playing loud music. I played in a band for 11 years or so, and I'm sure I've done some damage to mine, but great sounding music from my stereo is still there, even after all that.... It's been a long time ago since the band I was in, so maybe some of the damage I may have received, has gone away.... But I'm digressing.....
  4. Hello everyone... I recently completed reading Neil's book "Waging Heavy Peace" and was quite intrigued by his new concept of PureTone. He was saying that the MP3's that are out there contain only a minute amount of the original recording (I think he mentioned less than 5%) and that compact disc's contain only around maybe 15% of the original recordings. This is completely amazing!!!!!!!! He was saying how sorry he felt for everyone who listens to these MP3's and CD's and what they are missing from the original recordings and what the artist wants you the listener to hear. He was also saying that what he remembers listening to years ago on LP's sounded much better than what we are currently be fed to listen to. I'm sure that there is a "bottom line" to this new idea of PureTone and that's ok as long as you get what you pay for, meaning all this sound that Neil says is missing from todays music. I don't know if this new format, or whatever it is called, is available as of yet, but it does have my attention. What are your thoughts Klipsch Forum members?? P.S.---- Moved the KG 5.5's to a different listening area and am loving these things still!!!!! New titanium tweets might still be settling in, but all I know is that I love these speakers!!!!! On some music, I think I still prefer my old Yamaha NS 500M's, but it is a refreshing change listening to the 5.5's !!!! I think I'm hearing stuff I may not have heard before..... (nice....)
  5. As far as I know they are the original crossovers and capacitors.... The guy I purchased them from said he did no mods to the speakers.... And this mod with the tweets is probably all I'm going to put into them for a while.... I just thought that it would be such a noticeable difference as everyone has said on the forum.... most said that if anyone was going to do a mod, do this one first as it will be the most noticeable..... will keep listening and maybe with different types of music, I will finally hear the difference.....
  6. Well, got a set of the Crites tweet upgrades for my older KG 5.5's...... and got to say, I'm not hearing this big difference between the stock and the titaniums..... oh well, they still sound great!!!!.... I guess I just don't have the ears that you other guys have.... hehehe....... Very easy install tho.... gotta like that!!!!!! Maybe a break in period is required??....
  7. As far as the bit rate, I wouldn't have a clue..... hehehe.... I'm sure I could check if I knew where to.... but the whole thing is, the songs on the Sansa sound fantastic with even the cheapest of earbud headphones (I have an old Sony pair that have all but fallen apart, and the songs on the Sansa Clip sound out of this world good!!!... to me anyways)..... and this is what I don't get.... but someone did explain earlier in the posts, that the headphones of this type, were made for these little players, and I guess the players just aren't going to work and sound like they do with a stereo receiver thru some pretty decent speakers, as they do with little cheap headphones...... which is completely amazing to me.... but then again, I'm no electrical or audio engineer..... I would love to figure this out and hear that same sound I'm hearing in those headphones, thru those big ole KG 5.5's....... Oh and PS... Fish.... I see some nice looking guitars on your profile pic..... I'm a bit of picker and collector myself.....
  8. It should not sound that bad. Yes, it will sound bad, but not really worse than FM (here we have extra HD channels so FM is pretty bad, I sold a really nice receiver because our FM is so bad). did you run the MP3's through a dac or just use a cheapie cord? If they have a decent bitrate and a good DAC they should be acceptable, but not great. Just ran it through a cord I got at Radio Shack..... plugged it into the headphone jack of the Sansa Clip (the MP3 player) then into an "in" rca jack on the back of my receiver, and cranked the volume of the Sansa Clip.... then had to turn volume up on my receiver to about the 10:30 position.... the volume was decent, but it sounded awful.... and by that I mean just no tonal qualities, bland.... no distortion, just bland... I would say worse than AM radio when it's coming in at its best as far as the sound quality of the music..... I'm not familiar with "dac"...... would this be a digital to analog convertor??
  9. I would just as soon listen to FM on my receiver than ever putting an MP3 thru it again.... and for that matter XM Radio either.... of course I'm hooking my XM in the same way as I did with the MP3 player.... maybe the receivers that come with the XM feature built in sound better, I don't know...... My preference of listening would be CD, FM, XM, and if I absolutely had to..... MP3..... (don't have my turntable hooked up...)
  10. Hey thanks guys!!!!........ I bought another cable that is just one cable, and not two like I was using before.... hooked up the MP3 player (a Sansa Clip) and yes, I was extremely disappointed with the sound.... awful..... muddy.... no nice clear highs or anything like when you listen with earbuds.... even tried the phono input on my receiver.... blah!!!!!!! So thats it for that..... And thanks again for your input.....
  11. Thanks odysseyrevolver..... Kinda what I have now, except mine is separate cables... put a couple images below to show cables I have..... if they show up....
  12. I have a question concerning hooking a MP3 player to a receiver. Would it be ok and not cause any damage to the receiver by using an adapter cable to hook the player via the headphone jack, to one of the input RCA jacks in the back?? I have tried this, but the volume level of the music coming from the MP3 player thru the speakers doesn't seem as loud as it should be, compared to the radio or CD player volume at the same adjustment position of the volume control on the receiver. Would a separate headphone amp be something to try, or would this be a potential hazard to the system?? I have tried turning the volume level of the MP3 player all the way up as well..... Thanks for any help.... ----John
  13. "Hawks And Doves"-------- Neil Young.....
  14. Boy..... gotta tell ya..... I just picked up a cheap Sony DVD player at Walmart and hooked it into my Onkyo receiver just for playing CD's on.... put in a favorite CD by Brandi Carlile and I couldn't believe my ears!!!!.... only have been listeing to the FM radio on the receiver untill today and was turning the volume up just a hair past the 9 o'clock position which was a decent listening level, then hooked up the DVD and put in the CD and had to turn it back to around the 8 o'clock position!!!!!.... it was just so loud and CLEAR!!!!!!.... I think I was hearing parts of her music I've never heard on my main system, which is thru a pair of old Yamaha NS-500M's...... I'm wondering how much I would gain by adding a separate amp..... I mean, maybe the 80 watts per channel the Onkyo is putting out is all I need..... especially given the fact that the KG 5.5's have the 98db sensitivity..... what a beautiful sound....
  15. Thank you Aj72.... this is the input that I'm looking for.... I used to play in a band years ago, and I remember the big QSC and Peavey amp we used for our PA system, loud and clear, but when just sitting there not singing thru it, it made a buzzing sound in the speakers which I'm sure we could have gotten rid of but we were happy just playing..... I think that Peavey was a 500 watter if my memory serves.... nothing compared to what these local bands are using now.... sheesh.... hehehe..... Like you said tho, raw sound.... So I'm guessing if I were to get a "hifi" type amp, it wouldn't be practical to use for my little PA set-up?? Also, if I may ask, what would you recommend for a "hifi" amp for me??.... I would like 250 watts (or more) per channel (I'm just doing stereo, not home theater)..... but probably shouldn't be spending a ton of money.... (I'm thinking $500 to $700 range) Thanks again....
  16. Hello.... I got kinda sidetracked with my previous thread, so I thought I'd start a new one... (Previous one was Klipsch KG 5.5 Date Of Birth , also in Technical Questions heading) I have recently purchased an older pair of KG 5.5's and am using them with an old Onkyo TX-866 stereo receiver. I love the sound, but the receiver is an 80 watts per side receiver and I would like more power. I also play a little acoustic guitar and have a portable PA system and would also like to increase the power with that set-up as well. What I'm wondering and asking everyone is, could I use a PA amp such as the one I'll put in a link below to use on either set-up?? Or would I be disappointed with the sound of it hooked up to my KG 5.5's?? The receiver does have the capability to be hooked to the PA amp via a "PRE OUT" RCA type connection.... Here's a link to the PA amp... and thanks for any help.... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/crown-xls1500-drivecore-series-power-amp
  17. Got my KG 5.5's from a Craigslist deal.... They were in great shape and I paid $400 for them... Seen some since for less than that, but I'm just happy that I got 'em!!!!!!.... It's kinda strange doing the deal, as it's someone you don't know, but this guy turned out to be a real nice fellow and the bottom line is I'm happy!!!!
  18. OK... thanks again.... hope someone does too.... I also seen another part of the forum that dealt with general electronics questions.... maybe I should go there and see what people think.... will wait for a while and see what happens here....
  19. Ok... thanks Mongo171.... but would something like this work (link below) and be of good sound quality??.... I know that it is designed for a PA system, but do you think it would be good with my system?? I guess what I'm getting at, is do you think I would be disappointed with an amp like in the link compared to an amp made for a stereo system, such as ones we've mentioned above in other posts?? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/crown-xls1500-drivecore-series-power-amp
  20. Well here goes... hope it turns out ok....
  21. I've been looking for pics on the Internet of the back of my receiver to post on here, but cannot find any..... I'd like to be sure if I can hook up a separate amp tho.... gonna attempt to post a picture, if I can get it to come out....
  22. Just to let you know what receiver I have.... it's a Onkyo TX 866 stereo receiver.... 80 watts per side.... I know it's old, but it works fine as far as I can tell and this is the unit I am thinking of hooking in a separate amp to (if possible), as I've mention in the last few previous posts.....
  23. Thank you leftwinger57..... i will keep Audio Classics in mind.... have another question I posted to before this one.... if you get a chance to read, let me know what you think of it....... I am getting kinda confused on how to do the forum posting thing.... hehehe.....
  24. Hello Mongo171..... that would be more in line with a price I could afford, but I'm really only interested in two channel stuff, if it's still available... I also was saying to Aj72 about an idea I had, but I don't know where the post went!!!!!..... sheesh.... but what I said to Aj72 was what would you think of using a separate power amp that was for a PA system?? I have a little Yamaha portable PA that has a built in amp, but would like to get a separate amp with mayby 300 watts per side (2 channel). And I thought I could hook this to my Onkyo receiver via the main out's on the back of unit to a PA amp. Do you think this would work?? I know I've seen them for sale in Musician Friend website for $400 to $500, but I don't know if this would work with a stereo receiver??......
  25. Ok Aj72..... I'm in USA and these prices would definitely be out of my price range.... Would love to be in a position to buy, but just can't..... Thanks for the info tho....... I wonder what the results would be if I were to hook up a PA amplifier?? I also have a small PA system that I play my guitar and sing thru once in a while, and it would be great to use a "stand alone" amp for the PA system AND for powering my KG 5.5's when I'm not using on the PA system (which I hardly ever use). The PA system at the current time is a simple Yamaha portable mixer/power amp combo with (I think) the ability to add a separate power amp. My receiver that I'm using with the KG 5.5's is an Onkyo unit that has an in/out for the mains that have the little "U" shaped connectors that hook it to the amp section of the receiver. Was thinking I could disconnect these "U" shaped connectors and hook the "out" RCA type connection to a separate power amp that could do double duty as my KG 5.5 amp and when needed, for the PA separate amp. (Hope that makes sense.....)
