  1. The 4ohm setting throttles the amp so it's less likely to overload. Don't use it if you can.
  2. Onkyo 818, you can use the digital crossover feature and bypass the crossover to go active.
  3. JWM's room was very impressive, the sound filled the room, very very analog sounding. The crossover was outside the speaker! So you can go active crossover too. I'm not sure if the sound tends towards less details though. That amp they are using is 16k... Now I really want to hear the JBL M2... BTW: The Klipsch RP-280F held up very well to the competition at less than 1/10th the price...
  4. Once your setup is high end enough, subwoofer/Audyssey becomes detrimental. What is your source?
  5. Got it, yup, dimmer and CFL generates an unbelievable amount of noise into the lines, I got a meter to see it. Used Equitech is actually pretty cheap, I got a 2R unit for $500! The amount of difference it made is literally as big as switching speakers. I heard clarity like never before. Note that the non-Q unit buzz enough that you need them outside the room... The downside is it got me to start on a upgrade train that still haven't stopped 5 months latter.
  6. Try the JBL pro lines 7 series, but much more expensive though.
  7. Depends -- if the electronic noise is due to high amplifier gain magnifying preamp noise, it may cut the level by zip. Gain matching questions underlie quite a bit of this discussion. Some of the situations described might be helped by a quiet pre or pre-pro and a low-gain amplifier. Others might be worsened by a crude pre-pro and a very high-gain, very high-power amplifier. I suspect that equitech wouldn't do much to help in either case. Is that from experience? Because my experience is opposite, balanced power reduces noise from virtual all components, including the monitor which was a huge surprise to me...
  8. Start by getting a used equitech balanced power unit, it'll cut the noise by 10db+
  9. I was using a KEF speaker, and while the 280F does not have the magical mids like the KEF, it is better everywhere else. DYNAMICS, clarity (especially highs) I never had this good a mid bass before, not even with subwoofers. Plus it's less than half the price... In hindsight, the KEF had a smeared and lacked hi frequency. Smooth smooth sound partly due to compression... Very magical for vocal and piano pieces though. Overall, the 280F reverb lasts 1-2 second less than the KEF. Some complains though, that recessed terminal makes speaker wire connection needlessly difficult, please make it flat. Also, that screw is horrible, it has a tendency to push my plug back out as I tighten it...
