  1. Do you think $800 is a fair price, or should I hold out for some Chorus II or Cornwalls?  A guy had some black Chorus II listed a few weeks ago for $1100, but that was a bit much for my wallet.

Cant speak on behalf of the Chorus II's, but the Cornwalls are a mighty fine speaker.

  2.  Also, here is the closest resistor I found, seems to be the proper values...   http://www.parts-exp...lerance--016-15   (or is there a "better" resistor, or different type that should be used?)

I would not use that $0.78 resistor in a E or E2 network. They impose their own sonic characteristics which takes away all the subtle details. They will make a good speaker system sound like clock radio speakers. I recommend Mills or a higher quality resistor.

  3. This is a little off the subject, but I was wondering about which speaker would give better base response.  I have Forte II's, with the 15" passive radiator in back, and am considering a pair of Cornwalls instead.  The Cornwall is ported in the front, so I can place it closer to the wall (which I need to do).  Will the Cornwalls have better low end than the Forte's?  And how much better a speaker is the Cornwall than the Forte?

I have had 2 pairs of Forte II's and I currently have a pair of Cornwall II's.. No comparison at all. The cornwall is better in every way.. CWII has much better bass response, a nicer midrange, and better top end, and a much more balanced sound. I sold both pairs of Forte II's with no regret to this day, but I don't think I will ever sell my CWII's.

  4. Just my opinion, but it seems like the Forte is a speaker that some people love while other people find all the imperfections unlistenable. I find myself in the group of people who find them unlistenable... either that, or there was major quality control issues going on at the time of their production.

  5. They sound fantastic listening to something like Norah Jones, but when you play anything, from any source, more upbeat, they sound harsh and shallow. No punch. I know they are capable of it, I've heard some pretty low frequencies from movies on them. And I'm not looking for a crazy amount of bass. I want more if that live feel. I'd say my Heresys sounded more dynamic to me. They didn't have quite the realism as the fortes but they felt more alive. I've just never been that happy with my fortes as much as I want to be. They seem very difficult to place, and I've tried every which a way. Used lasers, tape measures, stands, etc.

I am with you on this topic. I was never happy with my Fortes either. I had 2 different sets of Forte II's over the past 5 years, and obviously sold them both. I only purchased the 2nd set because they were $300, so I figured I could easily flip them for close to double that... and that is exactly what I did, sold them for close to $600.

  6. I've had a pair of forte IIs from new and no weirdness nor bass shy, even with the old Yamaha 40 watt integrated.  If you buy a recommended used car, but get one with problems, you may also wonder why others raved about it.  Get a good one and you understand.  Sometimes it is as simple as the particular ones you get, you know, like women.  Many rave about them, but if you get a lemon it can taste sour....

Okay, so you are suggesting that my Forte II's had problems like a used car... Uh no.. They were in great shape with no problems.. Just a very critical ear.. They were not like a used car with problems. Nobody ever said they had problems. I just mentioned that I felt the crossover point from mid to tweeter seemed a bit off and the tweeter was a bit loud.. Some other forum member have created mods to correct it, for instance: inserting foam in the tweeter horn, or even ping pong balls??? I sold them before I would have to insert objects in the horns to tame the sound.

  7. I used to the own a pair of the highly praised Forte II's but sold them because I did not like the way they sounded.. Seemed like the crossover point from mid to tweeter was off, and also seemed like the tweeter was playing too loud.. 2 things that made them sound not so good to my ears. I could never figure out why people rave about them so much.. yes they sounded nice with some music, but not all. About 50% of my music sounded good with them.... and movies, they didnt sound good either.. dialogue of the human voice often sounded weird. Almost embarrassing when I had people over to watch a game on TV, yeah they sounded that weird sometimes. Other members here have had the same experience as I had. I enjoy my reference line of speaker better, and also my Heresys and Cornwalls. Now those are nice sounding speakers.

  8. I have a pair of 1985 Cornwall II's.. the kind without the removable backs.. mine also have the woofer and horns mounted in front of the motorboard, and have a K-57 midrange driver and K-79 tweeter driver instead of the k-55/k-77 combo.. They are the nicest sounding speakers I have owned.. I cannot see myself ever getting rid of them, they sound that nice, and I have been around the block with Klipsch speakers. If you are thinking about getting them, I would highly recommend them.. They have everything you need a speaker system: Deep strong bass, a midrange that few can compare with, highs that sparkle just the right amount, a very well balanced crossover and very good efficiency. What more can you ask for?

Don't you think you are exaggerating just a tad?    (I love this Star Trek quote from Scotty)   "...it's like trying to hit a bullet, with a smaller bullet, whilst wearing a blindfold, riding a horse."

Looks like Scotty knows what I'm talking about. Exaggerating a little?.. yeah maybe a little. :)
