  1. After doing some searches here on the site, I have found numerous posts about ALK's, AK-2's, AK-3's. The only problem I am having is finding out what comes stock depending on what year they are.

Also With different crossover designs, are they also accounting for different drivers.

Thanks for any clarification you could give to me.

  2. The noise is not that loud. I cannot hear it at the listening

position, unless I really listen for it. If I have my ear at the

horn I can hear it clearly. The same as the mac equipment.

The speakers I had the mac hooked up to we 88db sensitivity, I

thought the noise would have been the same volume if I hooked up my

    speakers to the Mac.

  3. I'm pretty basic. A Dual 1229Q table on ViaBlue spickes, stock

arm, Grado Blue cart, audioquest sobogel record mat. Into a

Counter Point SA3.1 phono stage with a matched pair of Electro Harmonix

    6922 tubes.

As we speak I am listening to some Paul Simon "Gracelnad". I

enjoy a lot of different stuff. From Coheed And Cambria to Jimmy

Buffett to Edgar Meyer. Most recent purchases have included:

Eagles Live, Kim Carnes, Dire Straights, Jack Johnson, and Fall Out Boy.

  4. When I hooked up the Mac equipment, I was not at my house. I just

wanted to see if other amps, in other places, made a noise that was

    similar to mine.

Thanks for all the help on this forum. Turns out I was being

really picky. [:|] I figure changing the output tubes would

affect this noise as well. Right now I have the GE6550A's.

As long as they still musically sound they way they do, I will hang on

    to them.

P.S. check out yo-yo ma, Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor: Appalachian Journey. (new post in "music/DVD)

    1b sounds great.

  5. So I think I can close the book on this. Today I hooked up the New Mac C2200 with the Mac MC2102, with a Mac MCD201. .............. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I GET THE SAME NOISE!!!!! (and that was with Canton speakers, not close to the sensitivity as mine)

Does everyone's amp have this noise floor? It sounds like even with $14,800 worth of Mac equipment, it still buzzes.

Couldn't you tap into the output of that noise, take it down to line level, phase shift it out of phase and run that into the input. Then you would technically get a silent output.

  6. tried with cell phone off, no dice. When I biased the tubes

(actually done by a technician I know very well) DC balance was used in

conjunction with the bias adjustment in order to get the reading within

the range specified on the amp chassis.

I have not biased it with an IM yet. I am setting that up with him as well. Mostly around his schedule.

  7. I know what you mean! I tried it all now, and nothing

changed. Dimmer out of all. Pure AV PF60 power filter,

Moved the amp to a different location same outlet. moved the amp to a

different outlet. Checked potential from 3rd ground to

chassis. Unplugged pretty much every device in the home.

Had the amp on an osculloscope with no sign of any noise.

Could this be normal noise coming from a tube amp at idle? Is dead silence too much to ask for out of a tube amp?

Right now I am ready to throw it out of the window, at least then it will be silent.

I have noticed that valve #1 on the preamp stage of the amp does not

glow at all. No matter which tube I put into that socket.

Hear is a simplified schematic of the amp.

    I sure do appreciate

any help on this. I would be willing to try anything you suggest.

    Thanks

  8. amp does not have a 3 prong plug, just two. The buzz is pretty much the same at both speakers as far as pitch and loudness. I have tried different outlets, only one piece of gear in the system is three prong grounded (preamp).

So for test #2, I just short the inputs on the amp? + to -?

I have unplugged the inputs to the amp, and the sound does not change pitch or loudness.

Thanks for the time guys, this is really frustrating.

    TG

Just to keep you guys/gals posted,

-I will be checking potential from 3rd ground on wall outlet, to chassis on amp.

-Also will be adding a better power line filter (Pure AV PF60).

-I will also be checking to see if pitch/vol changes while physically moving the amp around while operating to see if it changes.

    -short the amp inputs

All of these will be checked as while I was biasing my power tubes, I had it hooked to an oscillascope at my shop, and I did not see any resemblence of this noise.

  9. I was "luckY" enough to get 5 12AX7's when I only need 4. I

started moving them around, the hiss came out of different speakers, I

finally narrowed it down and got rid of it.

But the noise that made me buy new tube still remains... a buzzing type

sound coming from all drivers. It actually got louder

    [:@] Would the AC

balance have any affect on the sound? I just bias my power tubes

    the other day.

  10. Ok, so just as I think it have all of the noise out of my two channel system...

I put my ear close to the tweeter on my Heresy II's and I have what

sounds like a whine. This whine changes loudness and pitch when

the "gain" on my tube amp changes. But it is wierd, It gets

louder when I turn the gain down and nearly goes away when the amp is

turned all the way up. It also seems to be at a high frequency

when the gain is all the way up on the amp. Gain on the

tube preamp does not affect this noise.

    Any ideas

    Thanks

  11. In an attempt to eliminate as much noise as possible from my 2 channel setup, I am tracking down the source of each noise I hear.

With the volume almost all the way up, I get a lot more hiss on Phono than I do on Line inputs. I have tried numerous phono preamps Tube and SS, and numerous amps with the same noise present. That points to the TT. A dual 1229Q

Ground point seems ok, but I did notice that if I touch the + leads (outter jacket) from the tone arm to RCA female connection, the noise does get louder. Taking the Headshell off completely I get a very loud hum.

Any thoughts on how to eliminate it...? Or is that just the nature of the beast?

  12. Loooking into the samsung models. They are a great price. A

very stable player. Unlike Sony's 975. DO NOT GET IT!

unless you enjoy having to manually unlock the tray after the unit

decides on it's own to lockup. Lot of glitches with the 975 from

sony. Yamaha has a new piece as well that you should look

at. LG has a few as well that I would also stay away from as they

    are glitchy also.

Denon's are great. The 5910 in unreal!!! but a little out

of price range. That whole line is great. Burr Brown for

audio, faroudja for video. Not bad not bad. I myslef would

go with the Denon, but figured I'd through a few other out there.

  13. The noise does not occur in any of the other inputs. Only the

phono. The phono stage uses two 6DJ8's (one for each channel) and

the line level inputs use 1 6DJ8. All of the tubes are also make

noise when tapped lightly. Is that normal for these tube types?

I will also check all solder joints on the inputs. I did clean

all inputs with Ultraconnet as well. Maybe I did corrupt the

    solder joints.

    Thanks for the help!!
