  1. Fiona Apple's "Sleep to Dream" has absolutely the most bass I have heard on my system. Fleetwood Mac's "I'm So Afraid" from their "The Dance" runs a close 2nd. This is from almost a collection of 1800 CDs. Run KHorns, Adcom GCD750, Adcom GFP565 preamp, Assemblage SET tube amp, and a Carver MKII subwoofer. The others listed (that I have heard) are great choices! Steve
  2. Got a question for all you techies out there. As we all know, Klipsh are known for their sensitivity ratings, especially the KHorns. I run a pair of KHorns, powered by an 8 watt tube amp built by Assemblage (Sonic Frontiers) and an Adcom GFP565 preamp. I got tired of having no volume control range i.e. turning it up to "2" on a scale of 10 was the loudest I could take! So here's my question.. I bought an outboard attenuator made by Niles Audio, (4 inputs, one output) and put it between my CD player (Adcom GCD750) and the preamp. Turned it to about 1/3rd of the way up, and now I can use the Adcom's volume control with greater flexibility, from 1 to 5 out of a scale of 10, hence the volume changes gradually. Here's the question. What with a new piece of equipment introduced (basically a filter) would you say I have degraded the sound? I ask this, because I swear I can hear a very slight addition to "background hiss". I was told that since this attenuator is passive, that nothing would be added. Any input (pun not intended) is appreciated! Thanx! Steve
  3. Tony I have the Adcom (SS) GFP565 preamp..it has 3 switchable outputs..and tone controls! I couple this with an Assemblage (Sonic Frontiers) tube amp, and have been happy as a clam for over a year now! I welcome the warmth of the power amp being tube, but have no complaints with the solid state preamp. I previously owned the Adcom top-of-the line preamp, the GFP 750 (no tone controls!) and I hated it!! Much to their credit, Adcom worked with me and traded me out with another preamp (same model but not as good as the 565) ) but a used GFP565 did it for me! By the by, my speakers are the K Horns..since 1982! Give this amp a try ,you'll have to buy a used one (check out Ebay..good prices) You won't be disappointed..and a phono stage to boot! Steve
  4. I can't believe no one mentioned "Telephone Man"..that was really bad!!
  5. djk.. sorry, I thought we were all in this together! Let me back up a bit. I NEVER had a sonic problem with my KHorns, before CD's. It was then that I noticed the "ringing" (as you and others have put it) that I had never experienced with vinyl. But as we all know, we also get the scratches, no matter how much care you take with your records. Knowing that I couldn't halt the march forward in this recording/playback domain, I tried (as have many) other alternatives, like the dynamat trick, clipping the epilyectic (sp?) filter, etc with the speaker itself. While this did indeed accomplish some sonic improvements, they were (as stated in posts before this) "tweaks". YES, improvements, but small in size! I had always read about tubes/horn combos, and I think (you included) are looking for the "holy grail" of music enjoyment. The Assemblage SET300B wasn't that expensive (compared to the big names, Cary, etc) and it came with a 30 day return guarantee! All told, I opted for the upgrade, good SET tubes, etc, and still did it (shipping and all) for 1600.00 Not pocket change,no, but check out other SET amps! I'm sorry you took my comment wrong, but I was so elated with my find, I wanted to pass it on! I just want all the horn-loaded speaker fans to check out tube amps! Regards, Steve
  6. If I may add my 2¢ worth..you wouldn't have to change a thing with your horns..if you'd go tubes! I changed equipment (solid state) constantly, to avoid the "brightness" of my K-horns..then I realized that they weren't bright when I played LP's (records for you young folk). I never experienced a problem, even with SS gear until CD's came along..but when they did, I found that tube gear made all the difference! Try an Assemblage amp (SET 300B)..you'll love it!! I sure do! My hunt for equipment ended March 2K!! Steve
