you will end up doing both once you see how nice they can look. Mine were very dusty/dirty so i started with a very mild solution of water and dawn dish soap, damp wiped them down, with dry cloth right after. Then the steel wool and Watco oil, which has no stain added, it will only bring back to life what you have. Good luck, post some photos

this restore job was done with 0000 steel wool and Watco rejuvenating oil i also replaced the fabric. these are older photos, the darkness in the finished photo has diminished over time as well

I think i discovered a few things. Phono Stage on the 1010 needs repair RCA cord that came with the Orbit is bad, never in my 49 years have a seen that PL 15 needs some work as well All discovered by running everything through a newer Denon AVR Orbit with replaced RCA cord worked fine with AVR and SX 535 - not the 1010 PL 15 still danced the woofer cones with AVR and 535 Dismantled 3 systems to figure it our. Such is life with old 70's gear. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Temporary set-up on a table, new power strip from the wall - all units plugged into the power strip. Power strip is heavy duty, daughter is home from college and we purchased these special for her dorm room. I have a 3rd set-up in my main living room with a newer Denon AVR-S640H - it has a phono stage. I wasn't planning on dismantling all my set-ups, but this would rule out any issues with the TTs. Schu may be right on with the Caps, but the balance knob thing is strange, I'm off work in a few - will play around with more options then Thanks for the help so far

The Orbit TT is new, with no ground to the receiver, I assume the plug to the wall has this covered. The older PL 15 has a ground wire, and i do have it connected to the receiver, as required. I have never pulled the back or cover off the PL 15, could use a good once over. Still doesn't explain the U-Turn Orbit Plus doing the same.

Having trouble diagnosing the problem. A few weeks ago i was running a Pioneer SX 1010 (100% refurbished a few years ago) with an Orbit TT with Klipschorns (1974 all original except a new XO from Crites) The left speaker made a mild cracking sound, and it seemed like the K55V was having trouble. They are original from 1974, so I figured the diaphragm went bad, ordered a pair of A-55Gs from Crites (good reason to order these anyway) Noticed the sound still wasn't right, left side a bit bright or right side was muddy. Swapped out the SX 1010 for a Pioneer SX 535 (little brother) - sounded OK, but still off, at first I though it was just the down grade in receiver. Decided to hook the 1010 with the Orbit to some KG 1.5's - noticed the woofer cone was dancing a bit, and more on the left side. Swapped the 535 in and noticed the same thing, just less pronounced dancing. Did the same with some Forte II's 1010 and 535 same results. Next I grabbed an old Pioneer PL15 TT, and did the same tests with 1010 and 535 with the forte IIs Similar results, also noticed while i was touching the balance knob the woofer dancing was worse then it would settle down, again both the 1010 and 535. Thus I can't seem to find the problem, but something is not right. Last test was to go away from the phono stages and go ipod to aux, both 1010 and 535 - both sounded as they should. As always appreciate any insight/help before i spend some $s to have the 1010 phono stage looked at. Thanks

Just Curious I use the Heritage Code thread all the time - very helpful. I can't seem to find the WR - they are walnut, not not sure what the R means They are oiled for sure, no lacquer.

Problem Solved! Called Bob Crites, ordered the AA's. Swapped in a vintage Pioneer SX-1010. All is good. ricktate - thanks for the response. I am going to purchase new AA XO's from Crites - this way I can have the originals as well. Planned on the "O' Rings as well. Transported them in a 2011 Honda minivan (incredible what you can pack) 2.75 K-Horns with all the seats out/folded down. 1st K-Horn was positioned horizontal behind two front seats, on it side with front at our back seats. 2nd K-Horn was positioned on passenger side perpedicular face down. These also came with a 3rd raw finished bottom, that was placed right side perpendicular face up to fit with 2nd K-Horn. Tons of padding and blankets were used, all loaded by two young guys that work for a moving company. The floor is a finished basement, so base floor is concrete with traditional carpet and padding. I also have a HK-430 - these sound great.

Tried one last thing before calling it quits for the night. Removed the Tweeter and Mid wires to see if the bottom section was getting anything. It was, it sounds like each component is try to reproduce all range of frequencies, like there is no XO. Wondering if the transportation killed the old caps in the XO

The Apple TV works great with all my other Klipsch gear. It has a digital optical out, the Fusion 8100 functions as the DAC. I have placed all my CD players in storage, and will have to dig one out tomorrow night. I am beat for the night, but will be back at it tomorrow after work. Thanks for all the helpful hits so far.

No the Sony amp was not mine. My signature is really old, so all my gear is updated as well. Have these hooked to an Emotiva Fusion 8100, powered by an Emotiva XPA-200. Source is an Apple TV via Optical.

All screws loosen/tighten - tweets and mids are producing sound. 45 years worth of dust - i don't think anyone has ever turned a screw on these, except the wire out to amp.

It is both speakers. Independently I tried (at low volumes) to to switch the Red and Black. There was only a slight difference, and I now have both speakers wired the same, as seen in the photos. I did not try the loosen/tighten thing - doing this next.

XO is type AA

Yes - the former owner did the red marking job, I am not paying attention to that. I am following the left (top) is red and right (bottom) is black.

So my wife (which I really have to be nice to) suggested the old wires may have gotten kink on the ride home, so I replaced them with new wire and made sure the Left Red post went to the Red post on the amp, for both sides. Good catch from my first photos. Still sounds terrible.
