  1. Start a thread in the HT section and help is on the way. No need. I researched the issue and realized the function was unnecessary. Once is was disabled the boominess subsided. We have been watching plenty of TV of late but I have yet to put another disc in. I ordered some stands for the fronts to get them off my TV stand, as they were making it look crowded. This has nothing to do with sound and is all abouy the aesthetics of the room.
  2. The last Blu-Ray I officially watched start to finish was Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. However I had just set up my Onkyo TX-NR636 and had the Phase Matching Bass setting no, not fully understanding it's purpose. This caused the entire system to be far too boomy and really damaged the presentation. I plan to watch it again after I get my front stands put up and my mains re-positioned.
  3. 6.1 system so one in front and one rear?
  4. I would agree with the other respondents. Upgrading your receiver would seem to be the priority. If you can also afford to get another sub then that would be good, though not entirely as useful or necessary.
  5. Where are you thinking about mounting them?
  6. Some good looking kit there Scrappy. I hope you're as happy with the sound!
  7. Unfortunately I can attest to many service departments taking a very strict, "treat-em-and-street-em" outlook on their work. if a problem doesn't jump out and bite you while looking at a device you generally don't go out of your way looking for trouble. they may have also had a different way of testing the integrity of the HDMI board without having to install it. It doesn't sound like god service to me but I empathize with the service tech.
  8. Ok, this gets more intriguing by every time you post. I'm sorry for the trouble you have to endure this but I think the data gained from this experience will be good for many.
  9. Yeah, a quick Google doesn't give me much confidence in Onkyo. Seems like a gamble on whether or not they will work. I had absolutely no issues with my previous Onkyo 703 but I only had it about a year before upgrading. Will keep ya posted on the progress. AvsForum has an ongoing thread about this subject but many are quick to point out that the HDMI port is the most vulnerable component of most HT receivers. It seems to be pervasive regardless of brand.
  10. Please keep us updated. I had a 2010 model Onkyo that ran without flaw for all that time. I recently purchased an NR-636 that's running fine. All these threads about HDMI failures have me well paranoid.
  11. Looks like autocorrect got the best of both of us. Metros post implied that he wasn't using boy-ray and I had to look further back in the thread to confirm he was. I was mistaken and I apologize.
  12. Damn. I see this kind of thing with the laptops at work all the time. I usually requires a total system board replacement. Th only other thing I can think of is to disconnect the network line in case it's tryng to pull some data from a network source that no longer exists.
  13. I'm fascinated by this HDMI board configure setting. Can you reproduce that setting and choose one of the options?
  14. Youthman, you can test out the connected device theory by simply powering all your devices off and disconnecting all your hdmi inputs. Make sure you disable any CEC or remote over hdmi features on all your devices. If the unit still freaks out when you boot it up then you still have a firmware issue. If it doesn't then you start connecting devices one at a time to find out which one is giving you guff. Once you find which device is giving you issues try connecting it with a different hdmi cable to see if a faulty connection is the issue. I fix computers for Fiat Chryslers world headquarters and I see all manner of weird with connections so just try drilling down methodically until you suss out the issue.
  15. Metropolis, firstly the images used by any streaming service are far more compressed than you get on Gou-Ray Cyrus marks a compromise in image quality or a possible increase in artifacts. Even thought the images have the same number of pixels they won't have the same level of detail. Secondly, and more appropriate to this forum; there are no streaming services that stream lossless audio. Netflix streams in DD 5.1 instead of the more common DTSHD-MA 7.1 that most Blu-Rays employ. The difference between the two formats is night and day. If you've made significant investments in your hi def home theater and you aren't taking advantage of this bump in quality then you are throwing money away, in my opinion.
  16. I am glad I caught it when I did. I actually ordered a replacement speaker before I localized the issue and corrected. One more day of that harsh and grating sonic albatross and I was going to go Norman Bates on something.
  17. True, but from what I've read the Onkyo AccuEQ isn't very good at room corrective eq anyway. The processing bypasses the fronts and the sub as it is and attempts to, "timbre match" the remaining speakers. Since I bought a matched set of speakers this should not be necessary. It was also breaking the matching of the front sound field, something I refused to admit until I turned it off. I would rather go without this processing than to have it make the sound harsh and unreasonable. It was unnaturally present; something else I wouldn't admit until it was off. Now the sound isn't in my face and boring into my ears.
  18. He's speaking of the software for the apple tv itself, making sure you have the latest version.
  19. AppleTV seems to be rather fussy at times. We will often find that ours won't awaken when using the remote app. The remote app on my iPhone also has not been updating the album image when playing iTunes. I just chalk it up to wonky software.
  20. Think I figured this one out. I think the AccuEQ software from my Onkyo NR-636 overcompensated the upper mids for my center speaker and pushed it until it began to distort. I turned off the processing and the harshness of the sound has vanished. The center now blends with the fronts as well instead of being super present as it had been; blending in with the front sound stage and giving me the sound of the speakers that I bought.
  21. From my research it sounds like what I'm talking about is mid-range grain. Are there any known methods for defeating this effect or is this something I will need to learn to live with?
  22. I will take your thoughts under consideration and re-evaluate based on your recommendation. Thanks!
  23. I don't know if this is a defect or a byproduct of the aluminum tweeters but there seem to be some frequencies that cause a fuzzy sound out of he speaker. It's not all crystal clear. I understand that there were going to be quality compromises when I chose this set but is this one of them or is it something that came out bad off the line? This sound is not present at all frequencies being reproduced and is not present when the output signal has been silenced. I can somewhat hear the same kind of harshness from the KB-15 bookshelves but not quite as intensely as with the center. Thoughts?
  24. I ran AccuEQ from my Onkyo TX-NR636 when I set up my Icon roundtable yesterday and double checked the distance settings. From and centers seem to be pretty close but the surrounds measured a half foot further out then the physical location. Would it be a better idea to run with the auto settings in case it's accounting for something I don't know about or should the setting be changed to match the physical setting? Side note: all speaker levels measured the same at 0DB when calibrated. I've never had this happen on my setups and I've always used matched speaker sets. Is it unusual for that to happen or is it because I did a pretty decent job of measuring everything out to start with?
