  1. Yes the left channel was noticeably nosier then the right so I did add a cheater plug for the left amp which did make a difference.
  2. Hi Miken, I just purchased the Manley's a few months ago - so I would say very recent. When the mute switch is on there is dead silence. When I first powered these them on even after checking the bias they were very noisy more of a hiss then a hum. I noticed after more time the noise was getting less noticeable. Just 2 days I rolled the tubes with Brent Jesse suggestions and while the noise did not go away it did not get any worse. I'm hoping as these tubes age and I keep checking the bias the noise will disappear because when the music is playing - the sound is truly sweet!!!
  3. I agree with Schu no noise is the ideal, I have read that some people feel its acceptable to say move 3 or 4 feet away from the speakers and if the noise can no longer be heard that's OK. What I have noticed is that friends and family who are listening never seem to notice, but in between tracks I hear it and it annoys. I also wonder with these tubes being so new after burning on for a bit will they start to quiet down.
  4. Glad it's not just me I have noticed that by staying in SE mode and cranking the negative feedback to 10 - it does quiet the buzz a bit. Just yesterday I rolled all the tubes with Brent Jesse stuff and biased but alas still that buzz.
  5. Sure that works for me Thanks
  6. I have a pair of these along with a Manley Labs Neo-Classic 300B preamplifier and a pair of Quciksilver Horn Monoblocks. I have replaced all the tubes with Brent Jesse parts and when turned on there is dead silence at he speakers no matter how close you put your ears. I know that Mike at Quciksilver had designed these amps specifically for high efficiency speakers so I'm not entirely surprised. Then along comes a pair of Manley Labs Neo-Classic SE/PP 300B Monoblocks and now the noise. It's not horrible, but perhaps I had gotten spoiled with the Quicksilvers? Is it unrealistic to throw 6 300B's 18 tubes in total to a pair of 105DB speakers and expect complete silence?
  7. Yes spinning vinyl or worshipping at the altar of black plastic. i have been using Quicksilvers Horn monoblocks for a few years now and love the sound.
  8. I actually owned one of these things many years ago. Sound quality was only as good as the source material. However the maintenance and up keep of the unit and the tapes themselves lead me to pass it on. I will stick to vinyl.
  9. I'm sure you will get some good advice from others on the forums - you could take a look there to start: http://www.critesspeakers.com/
  10. I never got into this "Proper way to clean vinyl" thing, I recall reading an online article once with various steps, solutions etc seemed to me the process to clean one record could take an hour - myself would rather be lsitening to music. I have used the VPI 16.5 with nice results for some time and awhile back took the plunge and purchased the Audio Desk record cleaner and have never looked back. Granted I would never put a garage find record through that system would use the VPI first but for most records the system does a excellent job. Yes pricey but it's nice to hit start and walk away.
  11. I found my La Scala's driven by a Krell KSA 300S was more than adequte for the entire neighborhood.
  12. This was an option I had on the table and if I had not received 7 offers in less than 3 days on Craigslist I may have gone down that road and I agree with you refurbished XO's would have made a big difference.
  13. Hmm no carpet at all - hardwood floors.
  14. As promised after correcting the loose connection issue and now enjoying the La Scala II’s for a period I thought I would share some of my thoughts in regard to these speakers and my old La Scala speakers circa 1989 or so. They do look nicer and the heavier 1” MDF seems to be taming any cabinet vibrations. One negative with the old speakers when one of the grandkids trucks went flying into the speaker I just considered it part of the aging process – with the La Scala II’s well I might feel differently. As for the sound the biggest difference I noticed right from day one is the imaging, these things can image, precise and un-boxy. The voices and instruments do not appear to cluster around the speaker. The soundstage is spacious with performers and instruments precisely placed. The 89’s did this to a degree, but the II’s do it so much better it really floored me – Klipsch did their homework with these things. As for dynamics the II’s like the 89’s will fill your room, your house, your block, make your ears bleed if you choose to go down that road and do so effortlessly. These dynamics were going through my mind as I assisted with the loading of the 89’s into the truck. The gentleman who purchased my old speakers is renting an apartment in Brooklyn NY and being a Led Zeppelin fan I’m sure his neighbors are going to love him!!!
  15. There are four plastic slides which does make it easy to push around on hardwood floors.
  16. Yes to the toe-in and at some point may add some type of footers but at 175lbs these things are not the easiest to move. I did speak to Steve at tech and questioned the apparent discrepancy between the manual with its reference to a rear connection block and reality. He was unsure of why this was the case but as far as he knows the connections are made on top. I did suggest some type of plug and he said he would forward to engineering. I was told they did the two pieces out of concern with having a single unit weighting in at 175lbs. If I get ambitious this weekend I will take the cover off one more time and get a picture of the crossover, I can’t find an image of it on the internet .
  17. Yes customer is happy - no that's the Walnut.
  18. I realize that even when buying factory direct one reason Klipsch uses dealers is to provide customer service and I am sure if I had asked they would have unboxed and set these things up for me - but I never asked. In fact I have never had a dealer set anything up in my house but that's me. As for the service the dealer was on Klpsch's case and had I not been so impatient (it was only 2 business days) I'm sure they would have taken care of the issue. I've attached one of my crappy photos of a speaker exact location etc yet to be determined. I have also attached a rear shot of the speaker from the Klipsch web site as you can see there is no rear connection panel on the lower cabinet and if you look closely you will see the center circle on the top of the lower cabinet - that's where the connections have to be made. In any event it;s done it's fixed the connection between the two cabinets is what it is, now it;s time to enjoy the music!!!!!
  19. This wasn't meant to be a bad review - just perhaps a suggestion. I know there is a love / hate relationship out there in regards to the La Scala but I am without a doubt on the loving side. I did see this in the manual "Connect the low frequency cable to the two screw barrier strip on the rear of the low frequency cabinet. Be sure to observe proper polarity by connecting the wire with the Red Indicator to the terminal with the Red marking and the wire with the Black indicator to the other terminal." This two strip barrier on the rear of the low frequency does not exist at least not on mine (LOL) instead the connectors are on the top of the cabient in a recessed hole.
  20. Here’s the update: I went ahead and removed back cover and sure enough one of the mid-range horn connectors was disconnected (my thoughts on how this may have happened later) connecting that gave me my HF back but still no LF. So I gathered my two sons and together we re-connected the two cabinets making sure to have metal on metal not just plastic (more thoughts on this later) and there it was a functioning speaker at last!!!! So far: These are large, heavy and bulky speakers and although a strong enterprising individual might be able to set them up by themselves I would not recommend it. Once out of the box and setup one may begin to notice an aroma, even veneered MDF loves to outgas so open a window. This will dissipate over time and if you think of formaldehyde as a preservative not a carcinogen you’ll be fine. They are beautiful looking speakers (I will post some pictures this afternoon) save for their size they get an A in spousal approval although I do in some ways miss that industrial look of my old La Scala’s. Plus now any ding or scratch will make me cringe on the old speaker’s was just part of the aging process. The crossovers and internal wiring look to me like my old AL-3’s on steroids and growth hormone. That disconnected component – on both speakers the two leads that are supposedly hanging down from the upper cabinet to connect to the lower one, this was not the case. With one speaker there was a red wire but no black wire to be found on the other they were there but there was not enough slack to even think about connecting them. So I wonder if in reaching in with fingers and small flashlight to try to get some more slack I inadvertently pulled the connector off? On the other while groping around looking for that black lead I could have very well disconnected something on that speaker as well, so potential owners beware. Connecting the two cabinets – If I were to do this I would have considered some type of plugs or umbilicus, having two raw leads and attempting to get them into the connectors and tighten all in a space too small for any one with normal hands, while your assistant is holding the case up so as not to crush your hands and forearms, there has to be a better way. So all that’s left is to break them in and listen and see how they compare to my old La Scala’s circa 1989,
  21. Give Quicksilver Horn Mono-Blocks a thought I use them with my La-Scala's and there is dead silence nothing even with your ear pressed up right to the speaker and they make beautiful music together.
  22. Yes they do come in four boxes - the big heavy bass section and a top wth everything else. Definiately a two person job to hold the top while the other connects the red and black wires.
  23. A guy from tech support suggested doing just that and he told me it would not void the warranty, since if they were to send me replacement parts I would be putting them in myself anyway, So I suppose it is worth a shot.
  24. Hello, Just a few days ago I received my new La Scala II's unboxed them and set them up. I noticed that from one speaker there was only a faint music signal coming from the HF box and nothing from the LF. I verifed connections and swapped the speakers - the issue followed the speaker. I pulled the jumpers off today and once again on the HF taps - only a faint sound and when on the LF taps no sound. Tech support has suggested that this may be a network issue, but aren;t these things tested prior to leaving? The boxes were shipped via a dealer so there were no UPS or FED-EX abuse issues. Any thoughts or suggestion would be much appreciated. Thanks
