Well put - playing the game, trying to find a niche position, rigging or solidifying that position, or simply swinging for the fences is at the very heart of attaining the ever sought American dream. Sitting back, waiting for a hand out, or waiting for Big Brother to distribute wealth and assistance to the less fortunate is the new expectation. Most likely because it's been ongoing for so long.

  14. So, manufacturing won't be the vehicle that builds middle class wealth. Education is highly diluted and offers only a sliver of hope in climbing the ladder due to loss of employment opportunities. Increases in technology and robotics will continue to obsolete many more employment positions. What's left - Service? More Big Brother assistance programs? Ha! Gear up maw, I think they're a'commin for our stuff and there's about to be shootin' match here right quick. Class warfare, economic collapse & upheaval, whatever adjectives or dooms day scenarios you'd like to envision seem quite probable if we cannot even provide the economic conditions where one can actually earn a basic living. I'm good - for now, but I've been through too many rug jerking episodes in my career to be anything near complacent or comfortable.

  18. Someone, anyone, please explain to me how America can realistically expect to rebuild the middle class, and the strength that a stable middle class brings, WITHOUT a return of manufacturing within our boarders.
  19. The jobs that once offered wage levels that provided economic comfort from a single worker within a family unit - are gone - for various reasons. I can name numerous companies in my area that moved, folded, or were bought and stripped of the assets. Some still operate but only as a shell of their once great stature. With the increased need to now have 2 wage earners in a household, we now wonder why today's youth are running wild. There is no time to properly raise the children. This is another real product of the squeeze put on the middle class and the decreasing level of morality in our society. The house shown in previous posts was a very fine home in the day. With many wetting their beak in the fountain of prosperity during the last 3 economic expansions (early 90's, Y2K, and mid 2000's), there seems to be an underlying sense of entitlement, or at very least, a cry of FOUL for the current conditions after the '08 collapse. It's difficult to let go of something once you've had it. Education, and the promise of a better economic position that it will offer, is a joke. A 4 year degree in my area will open the door to a whopping $30K per year. Specialized disciplines, engineering or managerial type positions will get you $45-60K until you are either groomed within their system or prove yourself over time. This realization hurts, but its quite laughable - if you can get over the initial pain to do so. No degree, resume tossed in the trash. Why, because employers have shifted the burden of training onto the worker, or even the government. Is there any On the Job Training done anymore? Not so much. Many companies here have a revolving door at the HR level. Wouldn't it be better to simply retain workers long term? This stance is somewhat understandable with the last bubble burst and the roller coaster ride of trying to balance employment levels against sporadic incoming orders. It also helps explain the increased use of temporary employment services as it allows employers to side step many expenses. I'm doing OK, and I'm not moving to chase a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The system is admittedly broken when there aren't enough (good paying) jobs for the willing and able workers. Employers will push back using the term under (or over) qualified to justify exclusionary practices, but so many positions are posted with the intent of never even filling them.

IMO, whatever number is implemented as a minimum wage nationally will either be too high for some areas, and too low for others. $15 / hr will equate to roughly $25 / hour labor cost after figuring workman's comp & unemployment insurance for that employee. Seems a bit much for the small business owner to initially absorb. My profession is seasonal, and the workers rely on the overtime that it requires. The minimum wage @ 1.5X the rate for overtime would be a huge burden for our company. Even at the discussed rate of $15, there will continue to be huge subsidies given for health care compliance. For many, it is actually cheaper to pay the penalty than walk around with an insurance coverage "umbrella" that supplements the larger pool - unless something catastrophic occurs of course.
  21. Minimum wage. Should it be $15? No, not because I believe we shouldn't be helping our neighbor, but rather because of the mechanics involved with implementation. Heavy hands cannot legislated morality. Fortunately, I've had the opportunity to work for business owners that were willing to share in their successes. I've also worked in other climates where owners only saw wage growth as a detriment to their personal bottom line agenda. Needless to say, those tenures were short lived. $15? Debatable forever with no clear winner. Economies are only able to naturally support a finite number of people at a certain living standard without necessitating a shared financial burden in providing assistance measures (regardless of the method used) to the "have nots". With that being said, would overall economic welfare be better off with a total global population closer to 5B…..quite possibly so.
  22. This looks to be beaten to death, but re-read post #62 on PG #4 and I believe you've gotten to the root of the issue. Additionally, by creating an environment (weak dollar, lower overseas wages / material / and energy costs - NAFTA too?) in which profitability is greater for companies manufacturing outside of the US. our ability to support our own economy, as consumers, is drastically undermined which in turn perpetuates the squeeze and arguably the disappearance of the "middle class". Manufacturing was the backbone of the US economy, and our attempts to transition into a service or technology based economy has left MANY wondering what happened & why. I strongly believe in the free market for establishing compensation & pricing levels and thus have difficulty with the hand of government attempting to "fair" things up with wage minimums. But, the game and its rules have been set so how can we point fingers or complain about the economic conditions it has created? This is a classic catch 22 - loosen the rules and let the market play out naturally (& hope there is natural wealth sharing downward to those doing the work) or try to legislate it into effect (& have the businesses suffer because of it). It seems that neither approach has worked well over the past 25 years. I agree that not everyone can be at the top, and I find it highly troubling that the education machine continues to mass produce diluted degrees to unsuspecting college attendees. Regardless of the level of paper attained, there simply aren't enough jobs for them to fill upon their graduation. Education is a HUGE, government subsidized, business that offers ZERO guarantee for those buying into the idea of a higher education creating opportunity or wealth. On the plus side, we are now consuming more global resources. WIll this "pay off" for us later down the line when we are forced to consume our own - I sincerely doubt it.
  23. If you stick to your plan of eventually acquiring RF-7's, then by all means, get those center and rears NOW. $500 for those 3 pieces is definitely - a "good" deal.
  24. Most of you already know that those RF-5's don't show up that often. With that center, it is an "ok" deal. Missing 2 of 3 badges along with some scuffs & scratches leaves the door open for negotiations.
