You didn't pay $1200, you just made a thousand!  (once you decide to sell them)  Seriously, congrats on a great find.

Any pictures of the Khorns in their new home?

I am not looking to make a profit. I will hold onto these and enjoy for the remainder of my lifetime, unless there becomes an emergency need to sell down the road. My wife even liked them....A LOT! Which completely surprised me!

Here are some pictures. Please note, I do not have corners (yet). A basement remodel will be in store for me hopefully soon, which will allow placement into corners. Even without corners, they sound absolutely fantastic!

Peeling veneer, which will be re-attached. It was already coming off a little when I got them, and I have the other piece that broke off that I can put back on. Any suggestions on what I can use to reattach?

  2. I'm angry I didn't see the post sooner! They were spoken for when I inquired. Good job Drewg!

Thanks! If it makes you feel better, by the time I called to tell her I’m coming for them, the woman who posted them gave me the “ahhh...ummm...before you do, my husband is really mad at me for posting the price way too low”.

So, once I recovered from the gut punch, and after some correspondence back and forth between her and her husband, who was researching selling prices on eBay, I ended up paying more than double her asking price, which was less than the figure the husband had in mind, but since they initially posted so low, they weren’t going to sell it to me for top dollar.

The price was still very fair, so I grabbed them.

  3. They're playing ball and OSU is making mistake after mistake.  Knew it was gonna be a battle but geez they're sucking right now.  lol
Not over yet though.  lolol  On any given day!  [emoji4]

That, I believe, is the ballgame. What a nice rushing TD.

  4. I disagree.  Case in point---Chris Collinsworth.  He just never shuts up.

I normally like Collinsworth, but I’m a Bears fan, and the way he gushed all over Aaron Rodgers last night made me want to throw up.

  5. I cannot STAND Doris Burke.  She is the worst announcer, period with that sing-song voice on every play.  Even without the sing-song I feel like ESPN is trying to be politically correct by forcing a female play-by-play down our throats.   I simply won't watch.

Funny you say that, I thought it was Doris Burke at first also. But it’s not her, it is Beth Mowins.

  6. you say the AL NETWORK is Bad , OK , can you modify a AL to something else - now is an AA MUCH BETTER - yes the AL looks pretty complex -in comparison

I bought my ‘86 LaScalas with the AL network and read the same thing, that they are not generally well liked. I bought the Crites A/4500 crossovers and his CT120 tweeters, and they took the sound to a whole new level. I’m glad I performed the upgrades, and to be quite honest, I enjoyed my AL networks before the change. I just had not heard other networks to compare them to.

  7. Drewg did you get the new parts? Your assessment?

So yesterday I got the parts installed. I started off doing one speaker with upgrades (network and tweeter) and left one with the AL and original tweeter. I called my wife and kids downstairs to choose which they thought sounded better, listening to 24/96 flac Fleetwood Mac, Beatles mono remasters, Radio Paradise flac on my squeezebox touch, and various other songs the kids requested, and we all agreed...the upgraded speaker sounded so much fuller, brighter and livelier, with tightened up bass. It wasn’t even close. I then upgraded the other speaker, and the overall sound was just incredible! The amp I used to test was my newly serviced McIntosh MC250 that i just recently got back from Terry DeWick (and he did a magnificent job getting the unit back to original spec).

The only thing that I was a bit concerned with was how loud and bright the tweeter sounded, compared to the original, but it’s most likely the change in crossover points in combination with new caps. Perhaps I just didn’t have good tweeter sound due to the AL network and old caps. This was my first ever upgrade, so I don’t have anything to compare to other than the original parts.

I still enjoy the sound of the AL network, but with Bob’s network and tweets, i can hear every nuance. I’m very happy with the upgrade. Sorry for the non-technical review, but I promised I would report back after the upgrades.

  8. Drewg did you get the new parts? Your assessment?

I did get the parts, but unfortunately haven’t had a real chance to have any fun yet. It has been an insane week at work, so tomorrow, i plan to post impressions here once I have the new crossovers and tweeters installed. I want to do one speaker at a time so I can compare one with the A/4500 & new tweeters, and one with the old AL crossover and old tweeters.

  9. I offered to lend Drewg the AA recapped and the ALK so that he could do a comparison on his La Scala.

Thanks for offering. I don’t mind comparing them. If it would be easier, we can just swap them in and out of your lascalas and compare notes. If you would rather lend them to me to bring home and test on my speakers, that’s fine too. Once I get my crossovers and tweeter from Bob on Tuesday, I’ll PM you and we can figure it out.

  10. This thread, and others, helped nudge me today to finally call Bob Crites to order the A/4500 crossovers and CT120 tweeters for my LaScalas that I bought last year, and they will replace the original AL crossover network. When speaking with Bob, he recommended the CT120 tweeters over the CT125.

I actually like how the speakers sound with the AL crossovers, but they are over 30 years old, so i figured it was time update to hear what new crossovers and caps will do to improve the sound. I haven’t heard another pair of Lascalas with different crossovers to compare, so i am excited to finally upgrade what I have. I realize that the AL networks are widely criticized for not sounding the best, so I hope to notice some real improvement!
