  1. I also bought my PL from upscale Audio and the people that work there are awesome.  Kat set me up in a listening room and Kevin Deal came in and just listened to me try to describe what I was hoping to hear. Since then I have bought the kt 150s from Upscale and Kat setup my gorgeous Mofi Fender Turntable. The service there is the best I have ever experience at any audio dealer in my life. They share their passion with customers and are so nice. Total positive experiences doing business with them. When I told Kevin I needed to sell my McIntosh Ma252 before I could consider a PL amp he made me a very generous offer to take my MA252 in trade towards the EVO 400. As much as I enjoyed that McIntosh amp the Pl sound was what I was looking for and Kevin bent over backwards to help make that happen for me. Kudos to Upscale

  2. The EVO 400 sounds great with the stock EL 34s but in my system setup the KT 150s,  my S812 REL sub along with my Forte IVs take the mid bass and lower registers to another level.. I listen to music off and on for hours daily and the PL is never fatiguing. I often listen at low levels and dynamics never seem to suffer at those low levels. Crank it up and mid range vocals  sound live in my living room. Highs are clear and bright but never irritating bright. Low bass is solid and you feel it deep inside. Ithe KT150s almost make the low end sound like it’s a solid state amp but the overalll sound is tube warmth with the holographic sounds only an all tube amp can convey. I don’t yearn to try different amps because the EVO 400 sounds incredible to me.

HaHa at least you admit it!

I was the personal photographer for Hefs last wife for almost 10 years. I have shot with many top playmates and adult film stars over the years. So yes I have sexier images but they are not appropriate for this forum.

I could have taken way better pictures than those.

What’s funny is if you had been at a CES when PWK was there and you were given an assignment to photograph him, he would have asked you about your equipment, asked what lens and lens speed, he would have looked around at the lighting and asked what film, what speed, he would have told you, “your meter showing about [f stop] at [shutter speed], he would have told you about bracketing exposures, and a whole bunch of other things. And you would probably have listened and learned one thing just like Matt Sommers did. Matt said he was dead on with the exposure and had factored in the fast 1.2 50mm and every other lens he used.

What film was that taken with, the picture above.

Ha ha ha - film? What is film? Jk - I shot most of those pictures at iso 200 and used my 300mm f2.8 lens or my 70-200mm 2.8 lens. There are a number of great photographers on this forum, for sure. I have many lenses and used them dependent on what my goals were. Shooting a large lens like a 300mm is great for shallow depth of field but you have to be careful with the extreme compression when shooting people.

He was crapping on Matt from Toolshed saying his amps were copies of 80 year old designs.

Well that’s how old the 300b is but many modern amps use DC  regulators for the filaments and other modern schemes for volume control.  They are a mix of classic topology and modern  technology.

That guy has spent so much time writing multiple paragraphs of how great he is…. He should have focused on his promise , he could have built 5 amps in the time it took to author his narcissistic diatribe.

Every tube amp’s DNA goes back far so to say anything from anyone is a copy is silly

So much for Captains “original” designs.   The whole time he was full of crap !!!   You can be sure if I see him on any forums I will be quick to call him out as a thief.   What a loser

    To Shakey:

I would file a police report in his town for interstate commerce fraud via Pay Pal

I know Pay Pal won’t help , but to electronically receive money for fraud over state lines is a felony,  see if you have any recourse  I hope you do.

    Good Luck.

Those Toolshed amps are beautiful and I’m sure they sound amazing. I used to shoot a lot of Sports Illustrated style photography for Bikini companies and many photographers posted on photo forums that they could create much better pictures if they had my 300 mm lens. All I could think was if they were so talented and I was CRAP that they should pay the $5,000 on the same lens I was using and show us all how great they really were.

Keep in mind this was a private transaction between them, not a garage sale one. Also, CBH was a member for about 4 months when these deals went down.

I’m not saying that SD didn’t take the right precautions, what I am saying is that I appreciate his sharing the experience so others might avoid this.

If it’s too good to be true it probably is.

    Knowledge doesn’t equal integrity

It’s tough trusting anyone on any social media site. Better chance when dealing with a legit company like I did when ordering my Forte IVs from Paducah. The deal they gave me was fantastic and shipped next day. Far less then retail and arrived perfect but they area legit business. My guess is that Decware and Dennis Had would never Jack people around like CBH did with so many here.

It is with heavy heart that I have to say I think it's over.  Here is a cut and paste of what I posted on the ASR forum last week.

I am not a regular member here, but I was given permission by a moderator to make this post. I will not get personal, only give the facts.

captainbeefheart, who is a member here, is also a member on the Klipsch Community forum. He has offered a great deal of technical advice on that forum just as he has here. He seemed like a very nice guy, very personable. When the subject of amplifier builds came up in the forum, myself and another forum member reached out to the captain to initiate a build for each of us. This was in early February 2022.

Initially it was supposed to take a couple of months, three at the most. For full disclosure, we only paid for the parts up front. He was doing this as a favor because he likes projects such as this. It was my intention (and I conveyed this to him) to pay him a handsome "tip" for building the amp. So I sent him 1000.00 in three payments. I used F&F instead a CC (my mistake) so he wouldn't have to pay a fee to receive the money. This is something I wouldn't normally do, but we had several long PMs and exchanges on the forum and I felt like he was trustworthy. There was a thread regarding the amp build on the forum in the beginning, but I think it's gone now. So yes, I was a gullible participant in this. In 30+ years of buying and selling on the internet, this was my first negative experience.

At first, things seemed great. There was good communication about the process. I sent the first payment on 2/9/22 and the last payment was made on 4/3/22. After that, things got a little dicey. There would be weeks between emails and sometimes he wouldn't respond unless I reached out several times. At the time of the last payment, he promised it would be ready in two weeks. When that didn't happen, the next promise of shipment was by the end of May. No luck. Then on 6/13, said it would ship in a week. So you get the idea.

To be fair, the design did change a few times at my request. So I understand the missed ship dates in the beginning. The summer and fall went by with excuses of illness, house fire, family surgery, issues at work, etc. I tried to be as patient as I could and just let it play out.

In November, a moderator on the klipsch forum reached out to me and the other individual to ask what the status of the amps was. This had been an item of discussion in the forums and members were constantly sending me PMs to ask about the progress. During this time, the captain sold some other items on the forum and didn't follow through with shipping. Complaints were made in the forum and to moderators so they now had him on their radar. Eventually he returned the money to the other members, but this took a couple of months.

So in early December we asked for a deadline of 1/5/23 to ship the first amp (mine) with the other amp soon to follow. According to the captain, mine was about 90% complete at that time. He not only agreed to the deadline, but even said he would like to get it to me by Christmas. Well 1/5 came and went with no shipment. The excuse was long work hours. We went back and forth on this a few times with more promises to ship. The next day, then the next, then by the weekend, etc. Until finally he just stopped communicating. No reply to texts or emails, no answer on his cell phone. I realize now that my money is gone. I've only seen one picture of the amp several months ago and nothing since. I have asked for more detailed pictures several times since then with no luck. So I'm not even sure the amp exists.

So my only hope is that no one else suffers the same fate. I'm sure he will materialize again here or somewhere else with a new screen name

There is one update since I posted this. On Thursday of last week he finally replied to my email from the weekend before. He said he and his wife had the flu. He was angry about an email I had sent to his wife. I only did this because it was her email that we sent all the funds to, so she is culpable as well. His question to me was "do you want the amp or not"? My response was "contact me when you have it boxed up, in hand and standing at the fedex counter ready to ship". No contact since then.

I agree with the sentiment of others in this forum. Why would someone who is so proud of his knowledge and experience with amp building not be excited to share photos and details of the build process along the way? Doesn't make sense. Another thing that doesn't compute is why would anyone go to such a great length to scam 2400.00 out of two people? I mean he had all the money by April, why continue the charade? Why not just disappear like he is doing now?

To sum it up, I'm not sure if any amps even exist. I asked for pictures several times during the month of December. Never got anything. He even once said he had it boxed and unboxed it just to take some pictures for me. I got nothing.

So this is a lesson learned. Either we were scammed from the start. Or the amps are real and he just isn't going to follow through. In the end the result is the same.

I am sorry to see that you and WestCoast never received your Amps and that no matter what excuses CBH gave you guys it doesn't make any sense that he could not have sent you images of the builds in progress. It is sad that in todays world integrity of so many people has ceased to exist. Cant the moderators here ban members like CBH?

  8. Alvin at vineshine audio in Singapore just loaded a utube about changing out the switching power supply of a Bluesound Node 2i to an external linear power supply. I ordered the kit he featured and it arrived yesterday and I installed it and am blown away. My Node 2is sound improvement is not subtle. Bass response is greatly improved and mids are clearer, soundstage is wider and better defined and high frequencies are brighter without being edgy. Vocals are better than I have ever heard from the Node. For less than $300 and about 15 minutes of time replacing out the internal power supply my streaming setup is fabulous. the combo of the Node 2i, external power supply and the Denefrips Pontus, evo 400 and Forte IVs is intoxicating.

You always have cool things to say, and pretty pictures of women to show, including your lovely wife.....................cradle robber! Not to mention your nice house, car, and Audio gear, with those Miniature speakers you listen to.

I love my beautiful brdeI - Yowza! She actually surprised me and when the bill came for my teeny tiny itty bitty Forte IVs she paid them off before I even saw the credit card bill.

  12. I purchased my Primaluna EVO 400 about 3 years ago. After a month a tube arced and Upscale Audio had a new El34 tube replacement to me that same day. I now run KT150s and have never had another tube wear out or fail. My EVO400 is used for TV and music many hours a day. The EVO is self biasing so there is virtually no maintenance and I anticipate it will be years before any tube replacement will be required. A well designed Integrated tube amp doesn’t have to similar to owning a boat and be just another money pit. The combo of my Forte IVs, REL S 812 sub and EVO400 is magic.
