  1. Thank You Chris! The way the rooms set up it would be tough to have both speakers the same distance from the walls. Or does it work to have, lets say, one speaker 12 feet from me & the other one 18 feet & just adjust the balance to sound even? Or what about false corners? Like they do on Klipschcorn's. I've plenty of time. I'll experiment with it when I get up later...   Thanks!    Bill

  2. Here I am! I've got some pretty bad sleep habits as in bed at 4am, morning coffee at 4 pm... Plus, I have to admit, two night in a row I was hanging out with scantly clad bikini girls ;)  Although both of them are platonic relationships only :(   Lol...   I'm totally blow away with my stereo. It sounds so killer, it's unbelievable! Moved my iTunes songs to Amarra & OMG! Billie Jean & Hotel California & a few others are unbelievable! It's sounds like Michael & the Eagles are in my living room! But, I can hear a huge difference in bad recordings. I like 60's rock & roll a lot my favorite stuff doesn't sound better... Chris, I moved the right speaker dead center between the side wall & the wall that the tv & stereo are agains't. Or should I move it closer to the wall that the stereo's agains't?

  3. I'm actually amazed Chris! I adjusted the balance to play louder out of the right speaker so the music sounded as loud out of both speakers. Then I put carpet under the speaker & the sound got louder out of the right speaker. And then I put carpet on the wall beside the speaker & Wow! I had to set the balance back to even! Not only louder but clearer or cleaner. In fact, the right speaker just might sound better then the left speaker! There's no WAF around here so I'm wondering if I should hang carpet beside the left speaker?!  Lol... A friend of mine walked into my house the other day & said "Bill, as bad as your hearing is I don't see how a good stereo is going to matter". Hmm, a year or so ago I got fitted & tested for a hearing aid but didn't get it. So I called 'em & set up an appointment for next Wednesday! I'm looking forward to the high notes getting even better! Is there a bottom to the 'Rabbit Hole'  Lol20170804_160650_resized.jpg.27ce8146b5baa48432a7a2d840e1894a.jpg

  4. I paid $1000 for my La Scala's & I think I got a good deal. Guy was asking $1100, which I would have gladly paid, but offered $1000 & he said "Ok". I'm in So. Cal close to OP & see them on Craigslist in this range all the time. I believe the main problem with selling any La Scala's, Klipschcorn's, etc is their weight. Not practical to ship them. And So Cal being a populated area should help the sale. I'd buy 'em if I was still looking...   GLWTS

Tubes and power protection. This not a sales pitch just my experience. We lived on an island that had frequent power dips due to salt spray encrusting the power lines. After getting my VRD amps I was terrified each time it dipped or went off..on..off being afraid that if I was not right at hand I would have a hot cycle on the tubes and destroy one / some so I bought the APC and it was pricey but so were my tubes.

After moving into a new place with steady power I still used the APC but then the batteries died after about 3-5 years. I was going to replace the batteries with universals just never got a round tuit. In this setup I have no room for it so I live dangerously.

Thank you for the warning!  Guess I'm not out of the 'rabbit hole' yet? Lol...  How much do you want for it? I know I need some kind of 'surge protection' just confused on what.  Bill

Can't tell if you have a good surge protector/power conditioner hooked up there, but if not, with all of that expensive gear, it would be a very worthwhile investment.....

Thank You Jim! Hmm, what is a good surge protector for me to get? I'm using cheap-o ones. I do remember the place I bough one of my mc275's recommending a protector that was like $1000 or so. Is that necessary?   Thanks!   Bill20170802_132220_resized.thumb.jpg.06056c4e9a33698ae0863ac5948b4358.jpg

    Nice!!!

How did you manage to get those amps' to stay on the shelf like that? ;)

    JJ

Thank You JJ!  I used those shelves that you see in restaurant storage rooms. Restaurant supply businesses sell them.  My daughters boss gave em to me & I just cut it down from 6' to 26". I have no idea what weight their rated to but I do know I've seen what restaurants stack on them! I was lost as to what to use until I looked in my garage  lol  5982384a81b00_20170802_132151_resized(1).thumb.jpg.1dc7975b6195de8a5f3079f341665cb5.jpg

  8. Thank You Chris for programing my Xilica 4080! If anyones on the fence about doing this? Don't be! And Thank You Cory for getting me the Horns, drivers & the Xilica! Excellent service! It sounds fantastic! And it's only going to get better seeing as how I'm using Apple ITunes with a 20' USB cable for my source! So I'm ready to try HD Tracks & a CD player. Then I need to get the Danley sub hooked up...  I have La Scala I's but screwed & glued 3/4" plywood to the sides. I don't know if the bass sounds better because of this or because of the Xilica but it does. I can really hear the difference playing Eminem. Also the speaker that's on the carpet sounds better than the speaker that isn't so tomorrow I'll hit a carpet store for a carpet remnant. Also moved the large living room table out & put a smaller one in. It just seemed like the table was shielding the sound. What's a good SDCD to get? I'll ask in the CD section...    Bill20170801_224922_resized.thumb.jpg.cee7cce7552decec45303b8c3e430de5.jpg20170801_225009_resized.thumb.jpg.3243b523968aa89b620475e93f0f92cd.jpg

  9. Thank You for all the replies! These are the connectors I went with. It was 'user error' insofar as not being able to get the connectors to work  Lol... I didn't realize that the banana plugs that I have going into my bass bins were adjustable. I didn't solder the connections but probably should. I hope the ones I have going into my horns are acceptable...    Bill

Bill is apparently the first using a DSP crossover and K-691 driver/K-402 horn with La Scala bass bin.  For those wanting a turn-key setup, this is an option.  The cost to program it is the shipping to-and-from the D/FW area.  The degree to which the owner later on wishes to try out programming and in-room measurement for themselves, that option is still available to him/her.

When it's done, the Xilica preset file will be available for others that want to program their active crossovers for K-402/K-681 and La Scala or Belle bass bin--or a dealer with the resulting preset file to do it for them.

When you think about the number of people using room correction software nowadays--this isn't much a stretch of that concept.  And the listening results are typically spectacular doing it this way.

    Chris

Turn key? Well it's only turn key because of Chris! Otherwise I'd have a pile of equipment that didn't play music! So I'd like to do a 'shout out' to Chris!  Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! ...     Bill

If you are connected to the amp via XLR cables (which is what the Xilica uses) then balanced.  If you are running an RCA adapter and connected to the amps using RCA's (which you probably are not) then unbalanced.

Stereo if you are using all four channels.  (Mono if you are using each amp as a single channel monoblock, which you wouldn't be in this application).

Here's a setup for running your amplifiers vertical which I prefer. (Right amp for the right speaker, and left amp for the left speaker).  I used the left side of each of my amps to power the K-691's, and the right side to power the bass bins just to keep things easily organized.

Input 1: left channel from your preamp

Input 2: right channel from your preamp

Output 1: left channel bass bin output -> Right input on left speaker amp -> to the left LaScala bass bin

Output 2: left channel HF compression driver -> left input on left speaker amp -> left K-691.

Output 3: right channel bass bin output -> right input on right speaker amp -> right LaScala bass bin.

Output 4: right channel HF compression driver -> left input on right speaker amp -> right K-691.

Double check your connections one by one following them from the beginning to the end to make sure the correct drivers are wired to the correct amps, etc.

    (OR)

You can designate one amp to the bass bins and one amp to the K-691's and just use left and right as they should be, but I prefer vertical so you have a little more poop for the bass bins from the amps.

Thank You Trent! Well, I got it hooked up right... But, to make a long story short today I UPS'ed my Zilica & one of my K-691drivers to Chris... He's going to program it for me.  Bill

  12. Thank You! When I get home I'll hook up my pre-amp to my Xilica, my Xilica to my amp's & then amp's to speakers... I have the settings for the La Scala's w/ 402 Horns & K691 drivers but something was said about not having to enter them manually?    Bill

    Mike,

Hopefully you didn't have to manually enter the settings.  Which brings up this offer-  If anyone needs the Xilica settings Chris A helped me with let him or me know.  We would be happy to share if you wanted to play with them.

    Trent

Trent! Would you please send them to me? E-mail is billwhoo@reagan.com I have La Scala bins with K-402 horns. I believe the settings are the same?   Thank You!  Bill

  14. Thank You Chris! I've got someone stopping by Sunday to help me flip the sub 180 degrees & then I'll push it up agains't the wall. And Richard, thank you for painting it to pretty much match my walls. I checked with all the scantly clad bikini girls who hang around my house & they said it was 'close enough'....

  15. What's the best source to get music from? I was going to get a CD player but the place I got my 2nd amp from said to download 24 bit from a site like HD Tracks. Guy tried to sell me something that stored the music & then something else he said I needed to play it. I just got confused & figured I'd better ask questions here first. All I've used as a source so far is Apple I Tunes from my computer running to my pre amp. So what's the best set-up? And is downloading 24 bit better than SDCD's? or Vinyl?   Thank You!   Bill
