  1. Thanks for the replies. Painting - not gonna happen. I really like the Forte's and wouldn't want to (and definitely would) mess them up. I'll still keep my eyes out for some 20's or 30's if the price is right, but I guess I'm good for now.
  2. Thanks. We've been doing a lot of remodeling/upgrading lately and the 10-year-old oak wall unit is looking dated. The wife would like something more cherry should we replace it, hence my investigation of non-oak Klipsch's on the secondary market. Suppose I could also look for black fortes, but the KLF-10s are considerably cheaper and available locally. I'll probably pass on the local KLF-10's, but if a pair of black 20's or 30's become available, ...decisions, decisions.
  3. Thinking about picking up a pair of black KLF-10's to replace my Forte II's. Three reasons -- I'm running a KLF-C7 center, black is easier to match vs. oiled oak should I get a new non-oak wall unit, and KLF-10s seem readily available at very reasonable prices. That last reason is the kicker as there are currently two 'for sale' offers within driving distance. Will the sound be better -- considering the matching C7, comparable, or woefully inferior to my Forte II's that I purchased new in 1994? Any opinions you can provide would be most welcome. Thanks.
  4. Actually, I think those Polk's were $299. $70 seems like too little of a difference and I remember thinking the Kg2's were quite a bit more expensive. 14 years and three kids later, I'm allowed to lose my memory.
  5. Summer of 1988. I wanted to upgrade a set of Yamaha speakers that I had bought earlier in the year and was pretty much set on some Polk Audio pn5+ or something like that for about $350. My girlfriend's uncle had the 7's and they really sounded great to me. I went to a G&T Stereo store just outside of Reading, PA (hometown) to audition them and was pretty much sold. However, they had a pair of Klipsch Kg2's hooked up as well and I asked the salesperson to switch back and forth since I had heard/read somewhere that Klipsch's sound truly amazing. Unfortunately for me, the Kg2's did sound amazing and all of a sudden I was conflicted. I could afford the Polk's (just barely) but they sounded suddenly anemic next to the authoritative $420 Kg2's. I left the store without a purchase. I knew I had to get the Kg2's but I needed some extra incentive to justify the extra $70. Sounds almost ridiculous now, but I was a poor college student who used to eat a lot of Chef Boyardee to have extra spending money. I contacted a stereo store I knew of in Chapel Hill, NC to see if they would go lower than $420 and was told "no" but they were having a end-of-summer buy something, get something else of equal or lesser value at half price. So I sucked it up and bought the Kg2's and an NAD cassete deck for just $150. Been hooked ever since. Still have the Kg2's even though they were long ago banished to the bedroom in favor of Forte's. --Tom p.s. Go Tar Heels!
  6. Y'all, Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking I'll stick with the Fortes. I haven't seen any KLF-30s in oak on UBid anyway which is a requirement for me over the black finish. With regards to the Academy, I'm thinking the Internet bubble may have burst, but the Academy "bubble" is still going strong (i.e. it seems to be way overvalued at this point). The KLF-C7 is a good center for now. Perhaps in a few years... --Tom
  7. Y'all, I have Forte II's and a KLF-C7 up front. I am contemplating an upgrade to KLF-30s via UBID since the price is right (800-850ish). My thinking is that I'll have a better match across the fronts with three Legends and that the KLF-30s are a general upgrade over the Forte's. However, I've been reading on audioreview.com that more than a few KLF-30 owners claim that they are a bit bass shy. My initial reaction is "how can that be?" They're huge. Regardless, what are your opinions on the KLF-30s as an upgrade over the Forte's? Is it worth the $800? I'm very aware of Ubid's shipping charges. However, if you consider the total cost for the purchase (say $299 + $109 shipping * 2), it's still seems like a good bargain. Thanks. --Tom
  8. I have a lovely set of oak Forte II's gracing my family room that match perfectly with the wall unit and other furniture in the room. In fact, I bought my wall unit specifically to match my speakers. My question to Klipsch is this: Why did you not continue with your traditional finishes given that you have so many Heritage, Legend, and whatever you want to call the KG, Forte, Chorus line finished in oak and walnut? I'm sure other people are in my situation regarding furniture matching. Don't get me wrong. The maple RF-7's are beautiful and it makes perfect sense to expand the available finishes. However, I can't consider upgrading to the RF-7 unless they are made available in an oak finish. Any plans in the future?
  9. I installed a new set of SCW-2's this weekend to augment my KSF-S5 rear channels. Having 4 rear/sides provides a really nice surround fill. Anyway, the walls where I put the SCWs contained insulation that was ripped up a bit when I ran the speaker wire. Since I didn't want to put the speakers directly into the pink insulation, I inserted a piece of cardboard into the wall as a backing and then placed the speaker module against the cardboard before tightening everything up. I can't imagine that this will be an issue, but have I created some sort of fire hazard by adding the cardboard backing? It sits right between the insulation and the speaker. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks. This message has been edited by tarche on 06-10-2002 at 03:18 PM
  10. One important point to mention - scan lines. I never noticed them on my 36" Proscan tube. Then I got the KP53XBR300 with DRC (Sony's proprietary line doubler.) Night and day. Now, the Proscan picture looks feeble in comparison, especially when watching DVD's. And it used to be the "end all be all" as far as I was concerned. Pretty much all HD-ready RPTVs and Tubes have some form of line doubler to eliminate the scan lines. Definitely a must have if you watch a lot of DVDs. Good luck shopping!
  11. Bigger is better. I have the 53 inch 4:3 HiScan XBR. If I could do it over again, I'd buy a 65" widescreen. Prices are dropping considerably. Check out the Toshiba 65H80 (under 3K).
  12. We've got a 24 screen stadium theater outside of Philly (Regal 24 Marketplace at Oaks) that is all Klipsch. It's about 2-3 years old and sounds great. However, I still prefer DVD's in my Klipsch'ed family room. --Tom
  13. Y'all, The Legend series is being heavily discounted now that it's discontinued. The prices are low enough to make me ponder if I sould move my forte's upstairs to the bedroom (replacing the old KG2's) and plop the KLF-20 into my home theater to match my existing KLF-C7 center channel. Any opinions on the Legends (20's or 30's) vs. the Forte II? Thanks in advance. --Tom
