Get a subwoofer asap.  Nothing wrong with the bass output of your speakers, they just don't play low enough for movies.  Sub(s) are a must with home theater.

I have the exact same speakers and AVR as the OP and initially I was going to order a SVS SB-2000. I played The Incredible Hulk with nothing but the RP-280f's set to large. Let's just say I've changed my mind and will save my $800. The deep low frequencies these towers put out are phenomenal.

  2. I've had the 280f's hooked up a couple days now to a Marantz SR7010 in the living room. Running a straight 2.0 system. Listened to some music, TV and movies. All I can say is wow! Beyond impressed. Never knew what I was missing. I've heard my buddys RF7'iis in his basement and it had the same wow factor. I paid $850 shipped for my 280's and they sound as if they are worth more. R7-ii's are $3200 MSRP and $1800 now discounted. The 7's do not sound 4 times better in price than the 280's or even 2 times better.

Im not paying and extra 1k + for real wood and 2 extra inches of woofer surface. The cherry wood veneer cabinet on the 280's are very high quality, elegant and furniture grade enough to add elegance to any living space. The clean, tight deep bass on these speakers have made me decide that i DO NOT need a subwoofer , even for movies. The force these things produce are just that good and low. Detail in music is phenomenal.

So no, 7's aren't necessary, maybe for only bragging rights perhaps. Both speakers provide a similar smile on the face.

  3. Just hooked the RP280's to the Marantz SR7010 just running a 2.0 system for now with the TV. I am underwhelmed. Volume seems low especially on TV and almost like I have to crank it all the way to 70+ to get any decent volume and the bass sounds very weak. What am I missing? Connected with the bottom two + and - connections on the back of the speakers with 16 guage wire banana plugs. Front speakers are set to large.

What are reccomended settings for this receiver?

    Thanks, Grizzog!

I only paid $718 for my pair of RF82II's, delivered to my front door.  List on the RF7II is what...$3198/pair?  I mean sure, I like real wood and I like "made in America" and I like big speakers, but at less than 1/4 the price of the 7's, my 82's do a pretty good job; especially when combined with a decent sub or two.  Of course, the subs tend to equalize the prices, but I already had them.  Now if Klipsch was to knock 40% of the RF-7II, that would get them down to $1919 and things get very interesting!

You can get a pair of RF-7ii's for $1800 from an authorized Klipsch dealer. Call Acoustic Sound Design.

Did you send the wrong ones back? I am getting want I ordered tomorrow. If all goes well I saved a couple grand from retail.WISH ME LUCK....

Yes I shipped the wrong ones back. Hope everything works out perfectly for you. What did you order?

How did Mike handle it? Do he give you a good price?

So Mike handled it by sending me the correct speakers 2nd day air and UPS picked up the wrong pair. I must say he is responsive via email he emailed me back the same night i told him that he sent me the wrong speakers. I was a little turned off by the fact that I told him this was a huge inconvience after lugging these things in the house only to find out they sent me the wrong color and asked what he could do for me (perhaps an upgrade or throw in some bookshelf speakers). Only short reply I got was sorry, correct set being shipped out. Oh well stuff happens and after the price he gave me on the set of speakers and an AVR, I guess I can't complain too much I doubt if you will find better prices. Perhaps he gets overwhelmed (which could explain the oversight in shipping me the wrong set and the short email correspndence. I would probably order again and give him another shot.

I thought the questions were answered as good as expected.

These Speakers come in at different levels and tout different properties and features.

You have to decide what you can afford.

You might not like what another person might like.

it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

The 280f's were not mentioned at all in the posts even though the OP included them in his comparison. Only the RF7ii's and RF82's were briefly touched on. I am interested in hearing thoughts on the 280's as well since I just received my pair and debated on jumping to the 7's and wondered how much more improved they were over the 82's and if the newest reference premiere model closed the gap any between the flagship speaker and by how much. That is what I meant by the thread not delivering.

I can afford all three models like some others but it's not about affordability. Regardless of what we can afford, I think the OP is after opinions of whether or not the RF7ii's are worth the $1000+ over the other models and if so, by what percentage and what justifies it along with a detailed review of each speaker and it's characteristics.

  8. How timely this topic was just started.

Ordered a pair of RP-280fs a few days ago in cherry from them and stated on order form. Received them today, hauled them in the house only to find out they sent me Ebony finish (black). Emailed Mike to see how he can handle this inconvenience.

    Stay tuned.

Thanks.  I'm sure there are plenty other rooms that sound better but we love it.

Any reason why you didn't go with the cherry finish? IMO they match your room decor/color scheme much better, have a higher quality look (especially with the grilles off) and would add that additional high quality piece of wood furniture in your space.

Either way nice setup I'm sure it sounds real good in there.

No center is better than the wrong center.

Is there a reason you can't mount a center channel above the TV?

I think a center above the 60" tv would be too high and look bad. What do you think?

    IMG_1309.JPG

  11. I can only fit a center channel with about 4" in height underneath my tv above the fireplace. It seems i've found that the Definitive Technology Mythos 7 is slim and about that size. All Klipsch center channels are much larger with more depth as well. Would getting the DefTech center along with Klipsch RP-280f fronts sound weird or be a bad idea? This is better than going without a center channel at all right? Any other suggestions for a center? Thanks

Before buying a sub, what size room do you have, upstairs vs basement, HT only or mixed system, what speaker are you matching them to, ect.  These are important question that will have a big impact on what you hear and feel.  These are considered small subwoofer and will not work best in large rooms.

Smaller sized main level family room (16X20) that opens up to kitchen. Mainly for music and TV watching and some movie watching. Want to pair with RP-280F and two surrounds (skipping center channel)

  13. So I'm thinking of doing the RP-280f's, a pair of RP-240s, a Marantz SR7010 and and Klipsch R-112SW sub.

Heres the prices I got delivered to my door:

    RP-280f's & RP-240s- $1149

    Marantz SR7010-  $900

    R-112SW sub- $420

Is this setup along with the prices a good deal?

    Thanks

Yes.  Being a very symmetrical room as it is, it would look awfully goofy with the center speaker off kilter like that let alone maybe sound a bit off.  I say get another matching media stand for the left side of fireplace and go find a way for the center to go above/on the mantel or go phantom center.

How far back is your fireplace flue in reference to the mantel?  If it is recessed back 6-8 inches maybe you could cutout a space for your center speaker to recess back into the wall some.

    Bill

Thanks Bill. The mantel hangs out 8 inches over the gas fireplace. What would you suggest if I wanted to wall mount right above the mantel (of course the center would hang out a little over the mantel) RP-250C, RP-440C, or RP-450C? Would it even work with these being rear ported?

Will it still sound good for movies without a center channel with just either RF7-ii's or RP-280fs up front in the corners of the room?

    Thanks

Thanks.  These RF-82's aren't RF-7ii but are still a great speaker at a very affordable price.

4hr away are a pair of RF-7, RC-7 and RSW-15 for $2200.  That would be a killer front soundstage and sub for a few hundred over what you were quoted for just a pair of RF-7ii.  Use searchtempest to search from your zip code.  If you don't have good deals near you and are willing to make a road trip, you can find some great deals.

Thanks Youthman for the links! I've heard the RF-82's are a little on the bright and harsh side and can be fatiguing. I was drawn to the RP line because i heard the RP line is more musical and the horn was improved from the reference line to be less fatiguing. And I heard the RF-7 does not exhibit the harshness of it's miniature RF-82 sibling. Can you give me your thoughts?

If the 450 RP center will fit on the mantel, OK but, hiding the wire may be a problem. Just use a phantom center and you should be good for TV and music.  I would keep aesthetics in mind and forget using a dedicated center upstairs. You mentioned a basement for a more optimal setup down the road.  That would be a nice option and hopefully not have placement restrictions that are hard to work around.

Thanks Derrickdj1. Yes this room will primarily be for music and tv however occasional movie watching will be in the mix. How does a phantom center work for movies and is a dedicated center channel a must? I'm coming from and only familiar with a cheap Sony HTIB as my previous setup. The RP450 center channel would hang over the mantle as it is close to 15 inches deep and the mantle is only 8 inches deep. There is a media stand right next to the fireplace that will house my cable box and avr. Temporarily a tv sits on top now but will be gone soon when the new tv gets mounted. Would it look weird to have a center channel on the top of that stand? Of course it would not be directly center in front of the sofa. Or is the phantom center still the better option? Pic attached.

Welcome to the forums.  All 6 of my Klipsch systems currently in my home were purchased used.  Nothing wrong with buying new.  Just too many sweet deals in Florida for me to pass up.  I'm sure no dealer would have sold this system to me for $2000.

Thanks Youthman. I've seen your YouTube video. Impressive setup. Unfortunately, there are no deals like that I've seen in the Washington DC metro area.

    Miliellie111,

    Welcome to the forum.

Very nice room.  I think your plan sounds great.  If $$$ permits, get the RF7II.  The RC-64II is the matching center channel but is pretty deep at 13".  Is it possible to replace the mantel with a deeper one to accommodate the 64?

    What are the dimensions(L x W x H) of the room?

    Bill

Thanks Bill. The RC-64 RF-7 setup would be a dream, however right now budget is tight and I don't think I would need anything that big in the family room. Plus I wouldn't want to have to go through the trouble of modifying the mantle. There is a nice sized finished basement so I might go that route for a theater downstairs. Attached are the dimensions

  19. Hi all, I'm new here but I have been reading through the forum for months researching and this seems like a great community. I have never owned Klipsch speakers before but heard my buddy's RF7II's in his basement recently and was impressed. I just moved into a new place and would like to get a 5.1 setup in our family room. The room is not huge but a nice size. I've attached a picture of the room. I have a 60" Samsung that will go above the fireplace. I would like to put a center channel speaker underneath the TV right above the fireplace mantle. The mantle is only 8" deep so would there be a good center channel thin enough to rest on the mantle? If not, what center channel do you recommend (not rear ported since it will be mounted with it's back to the wall) and what mounting options do I have for that setup?

I got a price quote for $1800 for a pair of new RF7 II's and $850 for a pair of RP-280f's. The front speakers will be placed in the left and right front corners of the room toed in. What do you recommend? The RF7 II's would be huge in that room! Are the 280's a good compromise for $1,000 less? Not going to be listening at reference levels (2 babies in the house). And what do you recommend as rear surround speakers and a sub? I would like something that I would be happy with, but don't want to spend a ton as I have spent enough already moving and getting stuff for the house. Also, do you recommend Acoustic Sound Design or Sound Distributors for best prices/ordering?

Sorry for all of the questions but thanks for everyone's help!
