  1. The SKs went for $721; also a good deal if local pickup were an option.

I also plan to ultimately use the recommended Fostex drivers. Again, this is merely a recreational experiment. These enclosures are not meant to replace my Cornwalls and Heresies. I'll share photos and my impressions.

My expectation is that it will work to some degree, but my curiosity drives me to find out to what degree. I'll let you know the results.

What does the acronym OTL stand for? The amps have no output transformer, so I assume OTL refers to that design feature. My guess is Output TransformerLess, but I still don't understand the acronym.
  5. The Speakerlab parts just sold for $222.50, which is approximately $40 more than my max bid, but still a good deal. I wanted that stuff; and it's local too.
  6. This is one of the Tang Band drivers that I will try.
  7. The attached photo shows some of the drivers that will be utilized. I expect to eventually get Fostex FE103E drivers also. "Gentlemen start your ... C-clamps." Let the gluing begin.
  8. The attached is a photo of the cut pieces for two enclosures. There are 4 extra motor board peices to create the quickly interchangeable driver feature.

Go ahead and build them. If you end up not being happy with the sound, you can grab the Fostex FE103's for $31.50 each from madisound. ---------------- Thanks for the comments. They're just what I'm looking for. It's understood that these are not optimally suited, especially the 39 cent Pioneer, but theyre here and they were free. As you point out, the Fostex can always be substituted at a later date. If I eventually do spring for Fostex drivers, would you recommend the FE103E over the similarly priced alternatives? Even with a Fostex, I dont intend to trade in my Cornwalls or Heresies,
  10. The attached photo is not one of the Tang Band drivers that I will use. I loaded the wrong photo. The correct one is several frames below.
  11. EDIT on 12/15/13 Due to the new forum's data restrictions regarding attachments, the photos were deleted from most of the posts. ____________________________________________ This was originally posted in 2-Channel, but it seems like this is the better forum for this topic. Last Fathers day, my sons gave me several pairs of Tang Band full range drivers from Parts Express. It was my intention to build a rear horn loaded enclosure with easily interchangeable motor boards so that I could quickly switch drivers for comparisons. In addition to the Tang Band drivers, Im also going to try some Pioneer 4 drivers that were thirty-nine cents each. The whole purpose is to see what quality of sound can be extracted from minimalist speakers. Im not pretending to seriously rival Lowther, Fostex or Klipsch for high fidelity, but rather to satisfy some curiosity about the single driver approach. I decided to build modified versions of some Fostex recommended enclosures. The enclosure plans are attached as a PDF in a subesquent frame. Yesterday I finally got around to cutting the numerous pieces for the enclosures. Today Ill begin gluing. Photos of the work in progress will be posted. Any thoughts or comments regarding the single driver concept in general and rear horn loading in specific are welcomed.

The cheap foam surround drivers that Bose used in later incarnations of the 901 are notoriously self destructive.
  13. Frzninvt, For a time, CTS was the supplier of 15" woofers to Klipsch. The one time I had an audience with PWK, he told me that quality problems and/or production limitations, after CTS changed ownership, caused Klipsch to look elsewhere for 15" woofers. At various times (order unknown to me) Klipsch used EV or Eminence to provide 15" woofers. PWK was surprisingly diplomatic about my use of SKs. Naturally, he felt that they were inferior to Klipschorns, but he indicated that they were probably better suited to being dragged around in a mobile DJ business and powered by a 600 watt SS "stove." His implication was that Khorns were above such indignities. Our conversation included a discussion about why Klipsch stopped licensing its designs to EV and why Klipsch did not make kits. Both options prevented Klipsch from controlling the quality of the end product. PWK stated that he didn't want his name associated, in any way, with products that were inferior. Is he spinning in his grave now? The short conversation bounced from the above topic to the merits of Jack Daniel and back to EV with lightning quickness. In mid syllable of a discussion of malt whiskey, PWK asked, "Do you know what a patrician is?" Before I could respond that its an EV speaker he said, "A patrician is someone who steps out of the shower to take a leak."<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
  14. I get separation anxiety at anything less than 50db.
  15. Daddy Dee, Crated SKs weighed approximately 200#, i.e., shipping from Seattle was expensive. It's no coincidence that they seem to be concentrated in the Northwest. I managed to talk Speakerlab into sending the four at their expense, in exchange for handing out their catalogs to the audience. Before I bought them I asked if storing them in a garage in Detroit, at below freezing temperatures, would hurt them in any way. Speakerlab's response was, "We don't know, it never freezes in Seattle."
  16. I'm sure you're right. Nevertheless, Speakerlab did make some of their own drivers, but not for the SKs.
