  1. Well, 'lobo's got them big ol' empty VOT boxes on my back porch. Reckon these would work in them? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1387352734&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1 Of course, one would still need a couple of woofers and an xover, but it still seems it might make a pretty decent system on the cheap. I don't really know much about how much the xover would cost. For those who don't want to make the trek, it's a pair of Frazier wood horns, 9X26. As a lover of all things Frazier just after PWK, I've a feeling these would sound great. Dave
  2. If you remember the ad campaign for Yellow Pages a few years ago, I've accused Ron ('lobo) of having Ron's Amplifier Shop. If he sold it, he wouldn't have a shop. :-) He's supposed to be bringing the amps up on Variac this week. I think, for one thing, he wants to know the stock condition before selling it or them. That's fair enough. For another, I've got to have the 5's in my system for a bit before they go away!!!! Beyond all that, he's been booked for video work pretty steady lately and I've not even heard from him in several days. Friday, he came over and we took a bunch of pics of them. I've not had him show me the image upload system and I've had no time to figure it out. If someone wants to gimme a quick tutorial I'll get some posted. Dave
  3. Pirate walks into a bar with a horn sticking out of his pants. Bartender sez "Hey, Bluebeard, isn't that an Altec 511B sticking out of your pants?" Pirate sez "ARGH, it's driven' me nuts." Dave
  4. That's my listening room, and they are in DynaQuad supplied rear channels. The stands are Radio Shack, sand filled. I don't thing they sell them anymore. They'd be easy enought to replicate and improve using large diameter PVC plumbing pipe...I'd recommend 8" and wood foot and top. Fill the pipe with the heaviest stuff you can find. Lead would be great, gravel will do. Perhaps even cement. I have them on the stands because of sonic sight line issues. It may be reducing bass...but with two 'horns and a Cornie up front who cares? I normally use my Frazier Super Monte Carlos their (and they are really a better match), but they are down for reconing. Dave
  5. You're right, Max, about the "new" technologies. I use quotes because higher data rates aren't new, and more dense storage media isn't either...both are largely incremental technology. However, I've been recording LP's to 24/96 with great success. I'm looking forward to the impending drop of DVDR prices (already less than 300.00). I am also conducting location recording experiments with it, though still do 15/44.1 for release as I don't hold with transcoding and 24/96 is not an accepted release medium yet. SACD is no help to me because it still isn't as high res as 24/96 and above, I've not seen any record capable devices, and the catalog is really weak. I believe 24/96 and above is the ticket for the audio future. Dave
  6. I checked with Tuell in Dallas, and they estimated 216.00 for the woofer recone. That would have made it 316.00 total. Dave
  7. "When you enter vinyl records into the equation - you are comparing apples and oranges as it's based on a "preference in sound" rather than "accuracy in sound". As a recording engineer myself, I'd expect a bit of clarification here before I would agree. If you are referring to "enter(ing) vinyl records into the equation" meaning comparing to (eguating, by definition) storage media of comparable bandwith, I agree...though equal bandwith should imply similar sound under ideal conditions. That would mean you could make a meaningful comparason between LP, reel to reel, or digital sources with a minimum of 24/96 and above. However, CD by spec simply cannot be compared to these media because it does not have anywhere near the information stored. Even 24/96 has three times the information. "Preference" is indefinable as there is no accounting for taste. However "accuracy" means as true to the original information as is possible...and that is science. JM (and my ears) HO. Dave
  8. The Mark III's were 6.00 for the pair. It was the Marantz 5's that were so pricey. BTW, I got a response in "Older Speakers" that indicates the VoT's would have been worth at least 2000.00, perhaps more. They had 250.00 on them... Dave
  9. Many thanks. I had a feeling about them, but when Ron was on the phone I really couldn't visualize what he was describing...other than VoT. They sound much more ratted out than was the case. Anyway, I did try to lean him towards getting them intact. However, by the time he got back the other guy had already spoken for them, but only wanted the drivers. Go figure. Think I've learned my lesson. Anything in salvagable condition with a name one knows going for pennies should be nabbed. The gamble just isn't that great. Dave
  10. I can give him a call later tonight and see if he is around Email me your number to damallett@attbi.com and I'll pass it to him. Dave
  11. OK, unless he's promised someone else, and I don't think he has, I'll serve as your advocate and witness. I'll tell you this, his primary video business has been really down in the recession, so this is important to him. He's fair, but you can expect a significant markup on the 3.00. Let me take that back...if he were REALLY fair, he'd let me have the 5's for all the PWK button I've take from him for the past 20 years. :-> Dave
  12. They are Mark III's. However, let me know if you want first dibs and I'll pass it on. He's off at an edit session today. As they aren't mine I can't promise you anything, but he does do this to make a profit...the easier and quicker the better. Well, in his defense, he is working on what to put his personal system together from. However, it is mainly to pull our chains. I think his main criterion is to put together a vintage Heritage system for less than 300.00. I'd never make it...couldn't stand to part with anything. Dave
  13. HDBR: You may (or may not) want to see my just posted "VoT Mystery" thread. Dave
  14. Some of you may have seen LoneLobo's coup de son threads in Odds and Mods and 2 Channel Audio. I've been Sherlocking the VoT cabinets he got for free. I'd love to figure a few things out. http://www.loneloboproductions.com/Audiophile/70stereophile.jpg That's the link to the referenced picks. First, take a look at the cabinets (mycabinets.jpg in the above link) as they sit on my back deck. Note the round, filled hole in the upper right corner of the nearest one. Below this is two filled squares of about 4". The other cabinet has identical patches. Now, take a look at the same cabinets in place in the old B&W shot of the guy's system in it's heyday. http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=25955&sessionID={649594AA-FB03-4550-AF07-C1B0BBD77179} "Vintage Stereo System" in Odds and Mods if the link doesn't work). I see these cabinets with what appears to be a round dome or horn supertweeter in that position. I am betting that below them were two 4" mid/tweeters that cannot be seen as they were black and the contrast is low here. The expected VoT sectoral horn is in evidence. NOW: Take a look at the acoustic lens removed from the same cabinets by the buyer who gave the cabinets to 'lobo located in the first referenced link at the top of the post (voicehorn.jpg and voicehorn2.jpg). Also just notice the old pic referenced in the above paragraph is here as votheatre.jpg. I only recognice this driver vaguely and not in association with VoTs. Conclusion: The guy did a mod on these VoT's at a later date. Anyone know anything about that lens drive? Is this a "one-off" or a standard mod to VoT's? Finally, did 'lobo ****** the pooch in not getting these intact for 250.00? Inquireing audiophiles want to know. Dave
  15. This IS Texas. That IS my listening room in those pictures. Possession IS MORE than 9 points of the law in Texas. The door combination has been slightly altered and the old one is wired to a doubled-barreled (vintage, of course) shotgun (that rusts). Like they said at Gonzales "Come and take'em." :-> Dave
  16. OK, found the link. Hey, that damned Heresy is in my listening room. I don't recall releaseing photo rights. Where the hell is my wife? and children? At least the model 5's are still on my record rack. I think... This sucks. Dave
  17. Didn't see the Cornie. How much? I'm wanting a La Scala due to my passive ambience system that feeds both the rears and the center. I think the La Scala's extra few db of sensitivity would help match the 'horns better than the Cornie. Dave
  18. OK, I'll bite. Where's the picture? Dave
  19. Rather than fill this up talking to myself, I'm just adding this to my previous. Lobo called and said there is VERY large JBL subwoofer for 150.00. I called the local reconer and he said 216.00 to recone. He said the cabinet was trapezoidal in shape. Anybody know anything? So the ol' Lobo's returned to Fortress Worth to make sure he didn't leave a turn unstoned. He is taking his camera so as to provide us with pics of this lifetime horde of audio goodies. As he left the Dyna's and Marantz's here, I am thinking of moving. This guy must have been the mother of all audiophiles. Looking forward to seeing this stuff, and will share on a new thread if it is interesting. Dave
  20. They're HEEERREE. Not pristine in appearance, but look like very low use and super clean inside. He brought them in. That may prove to be a mistake. Also a nice looking pair of Dyna Mark III's at 6.00 for both. Dave
  21. Well, friendship can be hard at times. I couldn't bluff him if I were unconscious. We've known each other too long. He called me from the sale. Seems it was the son of an extreme 50's/60's era audiophile. He had a load of Mc 21XXX, a couple of Dyna PAS, Voice of the Theatre (Ron said pretty ratted out), a pair of EV Cornerhorns at 600.00/pair, a Marantz 10B at 1500.00, a Sequerra at 3000.00, etc. Most was priced at "market" value from his research. At first, I thought he knew the stuff, but determined that he really knew nothing except what he could find on the net. That's why the 5's were so cheap...like me, he could find no reference to them, so he assumed them to be boat anchors. I knew better than that, but it took a while to determine that he was not an expert, my assumption being that he knew what they were but something was desperately wrong with them or whatever. Anyway, a good day for the Ronster. He'll get me my center La Scala soon in Rosewood for 5.00 pretty soon, I'm sure. Dave
  22. They are in route to my home later today. He ain't gonna plug them in until he's brought them up on the Variac. He has MUCH more patience than I do, though I guess when you find a Michaelangelo at a sofa art sale, it pays to go slowly. More later, stay tuned... BTW, though he is my best friend of over 20 years, my feelings for him are getting just a bit strained. :-). Dave
  23. Kelly: Two things 1. Did you get the EAC I sent this am? 2. Please see URGENT just posted this forum. OK, so I have a wierd idea of beauty. Dave
  24. Marantz Model 5 monoblocks at 50.00 ea. I told him to nab them even though I could find no reference to them on the web. Can't imagine ANY Marantz VT amp not worth that much. Anybody know them? Please respond ASAP. Dave
  25. Craig: I hear you, man. Some of us just like ugly ducklings. Ron (LoneLobo) says that really keeps prices down. Seems I recall there as a pair of pristine Sansui speakers with over a hundred bucks on them at the same sale. EEEEyuch. As a (quite small) child of the 50's, I really go for that ol' styling, such as it was. Dave
