Yes, I specified my Heresy I pair. The sound was excellent. I just wish I had the Universals here to try on my Chorus IIs. The design is universal, so it adjusts within a certain range to match woofers and squawkers. In theory it sounds great, but Al says he doesn't support the Chorus II. He offers no details or explanation as to why.

Looks like #4 is the winner. 6uF cap. I'll look for an alternative for better midrange tone. The woofer caps are a different brand, not Sonicaps. The woofer sounds fine to me right now, so I'll experiment with the midrange first and see what happens. We live in the midrange.

Funny you should ask. I was just looking up the Chorus II schematics. Yes, I can read schematics, but with the wiggly puzzle that is the Crites Chorus II crossover, I just wanted to cut through the guesswork.

I recapped my Heresy I crossovers. Then I switched the boards for ALK crossovers. My soldering skills are normally for vintage tube guitar amplifiers, so crossovers are easy.

I found the 68uf Audyn cap on Parts Express. They're $18.69 right now. So the one I'm replacing is... number 1?

Good idea. I changed the title. I've also added Kilmat to the mid horn, and that really helped a lot. Got rid of the hollow shouty thing completely. Now that I'm hearing the mids much clearer, I want a way to space the instruments and vocals out. They sound congested compared to my Heresys with ALK crossovers.

I have installed Crites Chorus II crossovers in my old Chorus II speakers, and they came to life. They are very nice. However, what caps or coils can I change on this board to get more clarity and detail from the squawker, just a little closer to the Forte III or IV sound. I know how to solder and use an ohm meter. That's about it.

They definitely like the 10 AWG wire, but I'm pretty sure I'll never hit 5 watts with them in this apartment. The greatest threat to these tweeters are Dave's SMAHL-V2s.

Silent Feet, aka "hockey pucks". It turns out my carpet was having a muting effect on the La Scalas. They are louder and clearer with hockey pucks.

I guess we're both looking for a rebuild. There were a couple of forum members rebuilding Chorus II crossovers a few years back. Haven't heard from any recently.

Excellent idea. That's how the crossovers I'm waiting on work.

They're all set up now. Listening to Nora Jones CD. On "Don't Know Why". Nora's voice is much more natural and present with these little upgrades. Guitars on the other tunes are crisper and more detailed. I do understand now what everyone says about the conspicuous absence of bass on stock vintage La Scalas. I've got a fix on the way. These speakers are great.

Outfitted the first squawker with my Kilmat scraps. ALK's advice on damping material is really good advice. This is my third horn damping effort; Heresys, Chorus IIs, and now my La Scalas. My speakers consistently sound better with this treatment. The first speaker is done. I'm not going to change the caps right now. I'd like to see how they sound with new wiring. When my ALK crossovers come in, I will probably use an Audioquest type of wiring.

Pretty dusty, but no leaks or corrosion. I'll clean them up, and see how they sound connected to new 10AWG copper wiring.

I like alnico, too. I have blue alnico speakers in my Vox AC-30 guitar amplifier. The amp sounds great on Fender Rhodes, too.

Hmmm.... Perhaps that's why Al offers the Super AA-X upgrade for $130.

Yes, and the AL5s have a 2" mid driver. Actually, the 2" mid driver is why I'm getting the AL5s. That's a mod I'm not willing to do for these old La Scalas.

The spades carry the sound of the thicker wire nicely. If I had spades with a better metal, that would probably help, but these spades have worked just fine with my Heresys and Chros IIs. As far as bi-amping goes, I'll do that when I get the AL5s. Right now I just want to hear these old speakers sound new ++.

They're actually pretty beat and scratched up. They were stored stacked with one on top. AA Crossovers. I'm impressed by the sound, even though I know an ALK crossover will take them to new and improved sonic capabilities.
