  1. I say go for it! Mounting could be trickey, but that is not a bad stumbling block.

I don't think you will notice much of a difference timbre beween the I and the II, both sound very similar to me anyway. The I's may sound a little brighter, but not by much.

That's not a bad price for Heresys + you don't have to pay shipping - if they are in good shape... it's an easy call.

  2. Mick,

I live in Bellefontaine myself - I considered driving to pick up a pair myself to save on shipping, but did the calculations and actually got a pair delivered for less than it would have cost me to drive there. Of course they were in Dallas, TX, but $200 to my doorstep wasn't bad considering the cost of gas these days.

  3. The analog bug has hit me since I recently got my La Scalas. I have an opportunity to get (from my father) a Yamaha Direct drive / linear tracking TT circa mid-eighties. I believe it also has the top of the line Signet cart. of the time w/ little use. In this particular case I can't go wrong, because it will be free, but does anyone have any thoughts on this?

This has been in storage for around 15 years. Should the cartridge still work? Will the TT have any issues? Remember, it is a direct drive TT.

  4. It seems as though I have always had Klipsch in the house. I have always loved my Heresys, went the Reference route for a while, and wanted to really make a difference with my next Klipsch purchase.

I think I did it! I am not going to say anything that has not been said before, but these things really are several steps above any Klipsch I have owned until now. The soundstage is very wide, open and full of spine tingling detail. I have never been a bass nut, but I do like it fast and punchy - these babies deliver that in abundance!

I replaced my RF-3's in my HT with these, turned my RC-3 off (phantom center mode) and jacked up the output of my rears (RS-3's). I have also boosted the output of my SVS sub to compensate for the increased efficiency. Since doing this, I have watched three movies and can honestly say that I like the surround as much off as I do on. Has anyone else experienced this phenomena? I think with the wide soundstage and the extreme efficiency the La Scalas seem to dominate almost all detail in the movies' audio mix. I don't really have room for Heritage surround speakers, although I could do a Heresy center probably.

Has anyone else given up on surround sound after they have found their Klipsch "nirvana"? Or, am I just a lone ranger?

  5. I forgot to mention that I had removed the bad woofer and it is lying in another room. I think it might be a smell in the network. I received the new woofer today, hooked everything back up, and it sounds great. Must just be the network, oh well as long as they sound good... who cares!

3D nice air freshener, I should put one in my car too, and I'll always have that fresh Klipsch scent!

  6. I Just bought some '85 LaScalas. I am waiting for a new woofer to come from BEC, one was blown on arrival. In the mean-time this thing is smelling up the house. It has a very distinct, what I would call and old musty electrical smell. I can't describe it any better than that. I is definatley an electronic smell - but it is only one of them. The other, with good woofer does not seem to emit this smell, like the other one. Could it be something in the network, or am I just nuts? 9.gif

  7. These are raw birch that I would like to finish as close to the Klipsch oiled walnut veneer finish as I can get.

There are some minor surface marks on them, so I will obviosly be sanding. What sandpaper grit should I use? Should I hand sand, or use my small DeWalt sander?

What brand and color of stain?

Should I sand, stain, sand again, or will sanding once and applying the stain suffice?

Once the sanding and staining is complete, I was planning on using Watco oil, and maintaining as necessary. Will this work OK on birch?

Sorry for all of the questions - I just want to get it right.

  8. How do I tell for sure if my woofer is blown on my LS's? I get sound from the tweeter and midrange, but none from the woofer. I want to make sure it is not a network issue before I tear into the bottom of this baby. I have an AL network, I looked at all the connections and everything looks OK there.

If it is the woofer... how do I go about removing and putting back together?

    Thanks in advance.

  9. Theoretically, the can go right up next to the TV cabinet, because they are video shielded. I would caution you to move them as far as possible and move them forward, or backward with a blue screen on your set. This will show you if there is going to be any detriment to your screen.

Reason 1. They will have better soundstaging and imaging if farther apart.

Reason 2. I have had experience with the RB-3's (predessor to the RB-25's) - I had one right next to my Panasonic 36" TV, and now it has a green spot in the lower corner of my screen, which will not go away. I don't think that the magnetic shielding Klipsch uses always works real well... in my experience, that is.

  10. There is a new Volkswagen commercial about a couple who leaves their apartmentment because they are playing their music too loud for their landlord's taste. They leave in their Volkswagen, go to a stereo shop and end up in a new home playing music on their new sound system...RVX-54 with a Klipsch Sub, maybe an RW-8. Just thought maybe you all would like to look out for it.

  11. I am hearing from many BB members that the AL x-overs in my soon to be '85 La Scalas are sub-par. Maybe I have not looked in depth enough to find the answer, but what makes them inferior to the AL-4, AA, ALK, etc.?

Another question: If I upgrade eventually to ALK networks, how much $ am I looking at roughly?
