I went and got my Apogee 800 B Amp out of the back room, and inserted it, in place of the QSC PLX 1602 As much better as the QSC PLX 1602 is compared to my Pioneer Elite VSX 94, the Apogee 800 B is that much better then the QSC. It looks like this one, only a little larger. It was not quite as good sounding on my old Dunlavy SC IV speakers as the QSC PLX 1602, plus it has a noisy fan, so I kind of put it away. Glad I kept it now, it really sounds nice on the La Scala's, nearly grain free, and more Bass then QSC!

Heck, I am even not beyond using a solid state receiver driving a TUBE Amplifier, but I would really prefer to keep the path to the Scala's as Tube as possible. I will soon have a Pioneer receiver here, with the D3 DIGITAL Amplifier

I haven't upgraded my crossover caps yet, but to my ears, the La Scala's cry out for TUBES. Although they sound MUCH better with the QSC PLX 1602 then the Pioneer Elite VSX 94

Yes, Adcom made a device that provides a surround decoder, and a 3 ch amplifier for the center and 2 surrounds. This way, I guess you can have all tubes on the Scala's, and still keep some kind of surround system.

The Academy has been hooked up from day one, even when I was unable to get the LaScala's out of my truck, I was able to take the Academy inside by myself, and hook it up. I like it very much, I really do!

My Gut Instincts tell me a decent little all Tube Integrated amp would be the amp of choice of these La Scala's. However, that will mean giving up movie watching and my Academy Center, as well as my balance control Not to mention probably giving up remote control altogether. So, that kind of leaves using some kind of receiver with pre amp outs, or a surround processor. The Harman Kardon Receivers with pre outs are very old school with the way they do their preamp outputs. They have a metal jumper you simply remove to get preamp level output vs buffered outputs. Plus, Harman Kardon was held in high regard by PWK it is said, because of the work on T.I.M. Distortion done by Dr Matti Otala from Finland. So, there is a chance the HK AVR 247 may sound ok on the Scala's ?

LOL, what TEAC The La Scala's are new to me, and I am finding them to be quite critical of different electronics. That is, in a good way. I am probably gonna buy a Harman Kardon AVR 247 receiver today, and see how that sounds on the LaScala's. I found a real deal on one, so I can easily re sell it, if it does not make the team. .

I have been using a Pioneer Elite VSX 94 THX Non Digital amp receiver on them. It has preamp outputs on it, so I hooked up one of my QSC PLX amps to the La Scala's. My, what a difference. I only bought this Pioneer receiver because my Onkyo TX NR 809 is down right now. I never thought this was an awesome sounding receiver. It is going to be interesting to compare my Onkyo 809 with this QSC PLX amp. On my Dunlavy SC IV Speakers, I actually thought the Onkyo sounded every bit as good as the QSC, perhaps even better, because believe it or not, it has a warmer sound on the big Dunlavy SC IV's. I also have a big Apogee Amp I want to try on these La Scala's.

Well, the full band phase control is interesting, sometimes I like it on.

This is a Pioneer VSX 94THX Elite, it does not have the D3 digital amps, it uses the Direct Energy amp, but it has the full band phase control, and several of the digital gizmo's of the newer D3 amps, like Standing Waves, oversampling, etc, etc. I only bought it because my ONKYO TX NR 809 crapped out. I had a Pioneer SC 81, with the digital D3 Amp, but sold it, because it did not sound good on the Big Dunlavy SC IV's. Actually, nothing sounded great on them, but the ONKYO TX NR 809 sounded better, so I sold that Pioneer. My Son has one, he also has B&W 702's. He ordered an Anthem Receiver, and it took away much of the magic of the B&W 702's compared to the Pioneer He returned the Anthem Receiver to Crutchfield, and ordered that brand new 3,000.00 Marantz. So, his old Pioneer will soon be mine. ONKYO is repairing my TX NR 809 as we speak.

Brian of VMPS is dead, but several ex VMPS types still hang around on AudioCircles, I have heard. I bet you could use a CD with constant Bass Tones on it, and a SPL Meter to get it tuned. My kid just got his 2 new Outlaw Subs set up, and holy sheet. I have a Legacy Dual Impact subwoofer, haven't hooked it up yet. Just enjoying the La Scala's all by themselves. I am really liking these speakers!

If my speakers were made in 1990, , it means they are 27 years old. People will tell you, that the newer Mylar Caps do not wear out like Older paper in oil or Electrolytic caps did. True, they do not wear out, and are even self healing, as far as their value goes. However, what does increase is called ESR, and Bob Crites has measured it. I have sure heard it, when I have replaced old Mylar caps with new Poly Caps, or even with new Mylar. Besides, The cost is cheap to do what I plan to do, and like many on this forum, I am a bored old guy, so it will give me something to do

Julian was a Ham, like me, and I have talked to him on the air several times, before he died. I DO hear differences in Amps, and I asked Julian if he was deaf once. He told me he DID hear differences in amps, but did not consider that any big deal, since he used his tone controls to compensate. Funny, Floyd Toole pretty much told me the very same thing.

Thanks! Unfortunately, they only have one, and I need 4 of these, according to the schematic. My Brother is an AC Contractor here in Tampa, and I can buy on his account. I have never used these motor run caps before, but if you say it is cool, I am gonna check into them. I need to figure out a way to reduce the level of these La Scala midrange horns.

I knew Brian Cheyney of VMPS Personally John. I had VMPS RM 40's, and my buddy still has his. You tune them with putty, same stuff as the rope caulk for horns.

I just recently found a local pair of Black La Scala's, with the AL 3 crossovers in them. I found this crossover schematic online I have already ordered the 13uf midrange Capacitors, as well as all 3 of the 2uf ones for the stock tweeters. I may get Crites tweeters one day, do they work with the stock crossover ? I am also a big confused by the 68 uf caps for the woofers. I don't have the crossovers out of the speakers, but I was wondering IF Klipsch used Mylar or Electrolytics for these 68 uf capacitors. ? I was wondering if I could get away with some high quality non polar 68uf electrolytics, or if I am going to have to spring for Mylars or Poly's ? I went with the ERSE Poly Caps for the midrange and tweeters, and found them to work very well (when they break in) 68 uf Poly Caps are around 20 bucks EACH, and I need 4 Anyone have any experience with this mod on the La Scala's ?

I have them sounding MUCH better now. I took them out of the corners, firing right at me, to a more conventional arrangement, with the backs about a foot from the back wall, firing straight ahead. They sound much better this way, in my room, with this amp. Of course, I am listening flat, no EQ, tone controls, or room correction.

The sound I am getting at this moment is not terrible, but it is hardly great either. This Pioneer Elite receiver has Pioneer's version of Audyssey called MCACC, so I ran it, twice. It also has a thing called full band phase control. I really don't think the La Scala's appreciate being hooked up to this receiver, and are telling me about it. I read a document that says the speakers normally have their horns running at -3 db, but says the level of the horns can be reduced up to 9 db. How do you do this ? Well, what you say is true, however, my Ham Radio Antenna goes right across the roof of my house, putting the entire inside of the house in a large RF Field. I also have a 1500 watt RF Amplifier, so what might be happening is sheer RF Overload

Back years ago, when my Son went through his Rap Music phase, he bottomed out my CF 4 woofers more times then I would have liked. They "took a licking, but kept on ticking", probably because of the powerful amplifiers I used. It is hard for some to understand that a small amp when stressed will blow speakers faster then a large amp will.

I will listen to them, I have no choice right now. IME, different crossovers can sound different, to different people in different rooms. As I understand it, the AL 3 crossover is not the original La Scala crossover, so one would like to think it sounds better then the original, or Klipsch would not have changed it. I would like to get a parts list for these AL 3 crossovers, so I can order new Capacitors for them from Erse.
