  1. I bought this one: http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/emotivaMPS1p1.php I also have the pre/pro...
  2. How about Onix CD-1. $1495 direct. This is a rebadged MBL player costing twice as much. Good vinyl sound. no high rez
  3. I have a sampler disk of the styles I like that challenge systems in different ways.
  4. You can get a Shandling/Music Hall CD-25 slightly tweaked and rebaded player for $399 vs the MusicHall $500+ price from av123. They will then have upgrades that can be purchased for improvement. The MusicHall cd is a popular box for mods. TAS named the H/K $699 cd player "product of the year" and not just CD player of the year. That box has been seen on audiogon for $500.
  5. Then I should get the 7 assuming it doesn't need a new cart and doesn't have any damage. I need to determine a fair price for my 5. It's about 1 year old...no damage but the cartridge seems to ride low...the needle seems to have lost some suspension stiffness---I don't think I have too much weight. Worst case the buyer could get a new needle...aren't they only like $40 (not cart...just needle). I was chatting on audiocircle about this several months ago. I'll look at audiogon, etc. for some data points. Thanks for the info...
  6. Well I almost bought these...I quickly sent a reply stating interest and he replied with details was wanted to speak on the phone...then I got an email afew hours later that they were sold....I knew I should have jumped with BUY vs interest....$1k local...a bargin. one owner bought new and put in music room...not moved since except to stain. Raw stained walnut I think no flaws OUCH!!!! That is as close as I will get w/o actually buying...the delay is that I"m not sure they are the best form factor for my room...but such a great deal.
  7. I"ve been traveling for work...but I am interested. Here are my concerns... 1. The 7 has a moving coil cart you say...so I assume I need a step up device as my pre-amp is MM ready only...I will need to find out how much that costs. 2. How is the cartridge? I've seen needles bent where they ride low or crooked, etc. I've I don't need a new needle then it does seem very attractive....also what is the reply to NOS Valves question about hours, handling, condition of lps,etc....I can assume good things but need to verify. 3.Shipping cost? 4. Any damage to note...ie cracked top, chipped plinth,etc....would assume not Regards, Ken
  8. I have a modern stadium seating mega plex for movies near me...but I'm not convinced it sounds better than my home theater...with good subs I think HT does better in the impact department and with HT I find better sourround...as far as big screen goes with projection and the correct seating distance I'm struggling to determine what the real theater has to offer except getting out of the house...not to mention all the obvious benefits of HT like pause, comfy couch, no distractions, DVD extras like LOTRs is said to be much better on extended edition, etc. I saw Spiderman 2 for the first time last night at home...never went to theater.... Oh yeah....the clear benefit of going to the theater is seeing the movies earlier and not waiting for DVD release.
  9. I would use Cornwalls all around vs Belle/LaScala in the center--although they are all Heritage. Placing any big heritage for center is often a challenge...vertical Cornwalls seem popular..even on top of RPTVs. Front projection makes it easier. Show pics when you are done. The Cornwalls pound the bass and especially with SVS...one concern with both SVS and Cornwalls is the tightness, speed and resolution of the bass with music. I am not convinced SVS is the route for me with other 1,000 watt 12" subs emerging positioning themselves against SVS as less "boom" for music. I also think I hear more bass resolution with smaller woofers although much more expensive speakers. I think my vintage tube gear contributed to the softer bass...especially my basically stock design vintage pre-amp.
  10. I am interested in the MMF-7....I have an MMF-5 which I could sell towards the 7..... question....what kind of improvement should I expect? I wonder is this is worth the step or make a bigger one...or simply add a $300 cart like the Dynavector to my 5
  11. I'll try to find out where he sold them...they may still be at the dealer. I'm also checking on some Magnepans which were to be sold next.
  12. My neighbor's father was cleaning out his audio gear and since he didn't want to ship the Khorns he sold them locally in Florida for $600! I think it was to a dealer along with some other electronics. I couldn't believe the price...he knew they were worth more but didn't want to fool with the sales process....I guess it didn't take me serious when I said I'd be interested in buying them some day if he wanted to clear out the space. These weren't damaged or beaters either...
  13. Anyone ever heard of MELODY? Any feedback? The SP3 seems to be in the price range of vintage used integrated amps but w/o phono. http://www.melody.com.au/product/sp3.htm
  14. I've added another stack of 80s albums...a great lot if you are into the retro 80's pop sounds and often big haircuts....perhaps that's a limiited audience. I'll list ELO, Bob Dylan, Yes, Who, Greg Kihn, and others next. I'm trying to clear out some space and raise funds
  15. I think these are very different approaches and provide different sounds...it comes down to your music choice and preference...as you can read we all have difference tastes.... one person may put on 100db techno and want to feel like they are in a club...or 100db hard rock drum solo looking for that live arena sound....compare that to another person who listens to female solo vocal, piano, acoustic guitar, and wants a more traditional auiophile experience.
  16. I have a 3805 but I think there is a Pioneer that is a pretty tough challenger at the moment. For sound and less features at a higher price some like the Rotel. You can't go wrong with the Denon 3805...great features for under $1k..nice room EQ (need to buy the mic) and you can add a MC amp and then swap the AVR for a pre-pro as anice upgrade path. There are also new pre/pro and MC amps coming in the $1200 price range from other suppliers...also there may be some new stuff coming from outlaw in the spring that might challenge the typcial $1k AVRs

  18. As I too am shopping for cables for my pre/pro and MC amp with both XLR and RCA options available I've found: 1) DIY both cables can be high performance and affordable 2) XLR for this appliation (ie <1m length) isn't necessarily better (other than the physical connetion difference which was explained earlier) and especially since in my case the pre/pro & MC aren't a true balanced system. 3) Blue jeans cables has some reasonably priced XLR cables (Belden, etc.) 4) I'm skeptical that I could hear a difference between nice Belden RCA interconnect at under $100 for 5 vs similar quality XLR connections around $200 for 5.
  19. TAS named the Rotel 1072 CD player at $699 MSRP "product of the year" ...not CD player of the year but audio product of the year. They thought it was a break through in CD playback for under $1k....obviously it is their recommendation for CDP's under $1k. av123 is selling an improved MusicHall CD-25 for $299 with upgrades to be made available for growth. The Musichall player has a string of good reviews with a price over $500...at $299 I think this would be a nice upgrade from a $100 DVD player.
  20. For music with good electronics I vote for Prodidgy...if you are playing techno, high spl club music, etc. then defTech I find the higher end ML's to be magical.... I've only heard the $3k/pr deftech speakers and didn't find them to be my taste except for movies and dance music. others you may want to explore listing most expensive first: * epiphony (a buzz at CES...great mag reviews..off axis imaging not great) * VMPS RMx (dealer asking buyers why pay more? * Onix Strata Grande - future * GR Research Alpha - DIY affordable
  21. I have Microsoft Media Center Edition. I have burned WMA lossless and also gone outside of MCE and used EAC for burning and MCE playback. I really like displaying all my album cover thumbnails and scrolling through the covers playing tracks. The remote is much easier than a mouse but I'm not as good at customizing MCE. MusicMatch seems to offer more features that I can easily use...the "now playing" features automatically displays the album cover off the net and it used to display the AMG album review and band info. Now I get the MusicMatch music store band info which is less informative. I also have iTunes which is nice but I haven't learned how to do as much as with MusicMatch...maybe that's a fuction of what I learned first.
  22. Another CORNWALL.... I heard Seadog's VERTICAL Cornwall on top of his 65" RPTV last night....much better than C7 or Hereys options I've tried. Can you put three identical Cornwalls across the front with a screen above the center?
  23. I realy like the multi-channel mix of BECK - "Sea Change"
  24. I'm trying to make the event Saturday.
  25. I've been reading the emails and would like to attend. I'll confirm over email probably tomorrow. I have some half speed masters which might be fun. I also like BECK - "sea change" for Multi-channel SACD.
