  1. JohnJ,  Thank you very much for your insight.  The OP is very happy with his speakers and has listend to nothing but Klipsch Heritage his whole audio life.  I am also very thrilled to gather new helpful suggestions to my quest for better sound, and prefer to research quietly and explore for myself rather than open What should I do threads ?  Just thought I would share, then was puzzled by Mr. Delgado's constant refrain, thought I would seek a little clarificatoin from him or others which unfortunately has not been provided by any in my second thread (now combined) even though I thought it was perfectly clear what input, replies I was after.

I merely presented a range of mods mild to wild was hoping y'all could weigh in.  The response has been most puzzling.

I feel I was tricked into agreeing withing Preston Tom's you think the engineers screwed up that bad ?  It was never my intention to go there.

I still find it very odd some maintain if I think there is a 6 db misbalance in the voicing in my room to my ears, I am wrong.  How could a speaker by one size fit all to all people ?  How would they know me or my room ?

It's not understood? Same subject, new thread.

Why not simply post you original post in the thread you created on the exact same subject?

There didn't seem to be much discussion.

Or is it that you have an agenda.

I always get concerned when someone says they plan to leave. Without exception that has always ended with a dramatic swan dive off of a 10 story building.

Hope you stay, hope you share, hope you engage in friendly dialogue.

However, like Klipsch speakers, a friendly, respectful forum isn't for everyone.

Hmm, I believe I had two different titles and two different intents.  You have confused the waters.

Also your comment "Without exception ....   very odd, and perhaps prescient.

And you seem to contradict yourself repeatedly here in the same sentence.

And you call yourself a lawyer....

  3. Hmm, The purpose of this post was to ascertain exactly where a mod to a Klipsch speaker renders it no longer a Klipsch speaker.  I realize there may be different opinions on this point and thought I had laid out a nice groundwork for some discussion.  But, NOOOOO, this has quickly devolved into something else, and this moderator merge of the two threads is not really well understood.

    Lost cause, best of luck.

  4. Not concerned with the block Tom has been around, it's not helpful to me in my quest for better sound.

Very insulted he suggest it me, not the speaker.  Well, in a way it is, so I change the speaker to my preference.  A suggestion I would be happier elsewhere not helpful.  And then to be set up by Tom and intentionally misquoted by Randy reflects poorly on them.

The super cheap tweet was a tongue in cheek joke, sorry it missed.

The safe bet is that this is not an issue of making it sound better. Rather it is an issue of making it sound "different". Maybe the "Klipsch sound" is not for them. That's okay but wouldn't it be easier to buy a different brand. You should not have to make such large changes to a speaker.

Um, with all due respect, exactly who are you to say ?

  6. Yes, to my ears, in my room, the engineers really did screw it up that much to warrant a 6 db drop on the mids.  Or the LaScala requries a -7 db drop at precisely 148 Hz, it definitely has a pronounced hump in it's response, and some call this a feature or glitch.  There are always compromises in design and implementation and my preferences, values, and exectution may be wholly different from someone else.

I do not wish to criticize engineering decisions I am not privy to.  The Klipsch line is generally a great speaker left alone and a great starting point for those interested in tuning and refining.

  7. I thought I would check in with some thoughts on when I need to remove the Klipsch nameplate and refer to my speakers as formerly known as Klipsch.  Perhaps y'all can help or an authority or two will chime in.

    0)  Finish or Refinish the cabinets

    1)  My cat had it's way with the grille, so I used some other non Klipsch issued grille cloth.  I think it was a different color also.

1.5)  Removed the speaker grilles when I was feeling discoey.  (This may be a moot point as the nameplate is attached to the grille)

    2.4)  Added a 2 x 4' as a cheap tilt stand.

    3)  A crimped spade lug fell off a 18 ga stranded stock wire, so I used another wire and went bare wire to terminal.

    4)  Recapped as an abundance of caution and used caps not JEM.  The options here are bewildering, from Dayton Audio cheapies to uber expensive Duelund Audio.

    4.5)  New different crossovers

    5)  Braced the cabinet and added a better attached heavier rear panel to the Heresy I.

    6)  Stuffed the cabinet full of insulation to enhance the bass response some.

    7)  My speakers were shrill with no bass to my ears in my room, so I added L-pads to adjust and balance the voicing.

7.1)  Moved two wires on the crossover transformer taps.

    8.  Could no longer stand the funny looking K77 tweeters and went with one of the oft recommended other options.

8.5)  Super Heresys sound cool, so....

    -----------------  ? ? ? ?

    9)  The speakers I found had torn woofers and no mid drivers, so used Pyle drivers to replace the woofer and mid horn.

    10)  Added a piezo super tweeter

Maybe a line or a points system can be suggested so I can be sure I'm compliant.

    Thanks in advance,

  8. While I see a little (very little) merit to the argument for selecting speakers based on musical preference, I believe a nice sounding speaker should sound nice for all types of music.

My experience is that piano and acoustic guitar are by far the hardest instruments to convey accurately, there is something about the chordal nature and dynamics of those two instruments.  Also, as my sound improves, it is the drums that start to pop out, otherwise they tend to get hidden in the mix.

  9. If someone is so lazy and clueless they would rather look to someone else to recommend their speaker choice rather than doing a little research and soul searching on their personal values and preferences, then they get what they deserve and have no reason to be unhappy.

Agree that room size and treatments have an immense effect on speaker implementation.  But that did not stop this high school kid from buying LaScalas for a way too small bedroom.  I recently moved my stereo from a dedicated listening room rather small to a larger den / kitchen area, and my sound has never been better as a result.

  10. I like Schu's estimate and have to concur the key to selling them this year is a most enticing price hard to pass up.  Also out of state buyers will more likely make a longer drive if the price is right.  You may want to consider a nice package price or you may end up left with a single Belle.  Cuz you don't want to ship those suckers, they need to be picked up.

  11. I thought I would recap 10 things I learned from the Technical / Modifications forum:

    1)  Your caps are old and bad.  You need Crites' Sonicaps, no Solens, no only Delgado approved JEMs.  Then ditch all that and buy new crossovers.

    2)  You need a Super Heresy.  Buy new woofers, get a hole saw, and go to town.

    3)  Passive crossovers are too easy.  You need to triamp with an Xilica active digital crossover.

    4)  Crappy 18 ga stranded zip cord was good enough for PWK, so any other wire is not authentic Klipsch.

    5)  You Jubilee people are wussies, you need MCMs with 18 ga stranded zip cord.

    6)  It's damp, not dampen.  I'm not pedantic, I just refuse to recognize common synonyms.

    7)  SET amps won't drive 105 db efficient speakers adequately, the speakers drive them as they are under damped (or is it dampened ?) and you're enjoying the reverb, but it's not accurate.

    8.  Your tweeters aren't tweety enough, ditch the K77s and get 120s or 125s.

    9)  Your K55s are no good unless they have solder lugs and two piece phase plugs.

    10)  My personal favorite:  You can not put enough wood on the back of a Heresy.

  12. OK, I've reread your most informative repost, and I believe the main issue here is I'm dealing with small Heresy speakers in a medium size (20 x 20') room, while you are coming from large auditorium fully horn loaded speakers in a larger room.  In my youth I was entranced with the large horn speakers, but my room was small and I soon realized I listened at about a 90 db level.  While speakers with kick demo well, I do not believe listening levels above 100 db can be sustained for any period of time.  In my advancing years, I am now very happy with the smaller Heresy fed by an esoteric OTL tube amp.  Also, I grew tired of staring at huge speakers, really appreciate the size, performance ratio of the Heresy now.

Basically the point I was trying to make is speakers placed far apart (in corners) do not provide a strong center image (usually).

  13. Hmm, room corners.  While any speaker will do better in a room corner bass response and room coupling wise, it is seldom the best placement when considering a strong center image.  Of course PWK countered this with a center channel.  I experimented with this with using both LaScalas and Cornwalls together in a wall of sound.  I now favor the Heresy pair pulled about 4 feet away from the back wall and toed in 45 degrees and well far away from the side walls.
