Thanks. These are my first 3-way speakers in 20ish years, the previous being some form of Infinity speakers whose model is lost to /dev/null, but a google search says SM125 looks right.

I bet they are, possibly WAF proof too.

Well, I have em, they are in pristine condition too! The gentleman that was selling was interested in some Forte IVs for his pool table area. Within minutes of getting them home i ran into one unintended consequence, namely the corollary to WAF: CAF. Cat Attraction Factor. The fur covering is like a magnet and so far the only solution has been AC/DC. (Music, not electric shock) If I can't remedy this I may have to head to the Garage Sale area. 😕 WAF rating so far is not zero, but hovering around a 2 on a scale of 0 to 10. I'll have to start a new thread around these in the modifications area. I think LPad'ing the mid and tweeter are going to be necessary to bring out the bass from these. I really don't mind sacrificing a few DB if it brings them into balance. First things first though, measurements in the morning when everyone is out of the house.
  4. Hi Outrider, Thank you for that, if I decide to purchase them I will test with REW and DATS and figure out something. I need to become more familiar with autotransformers too. I priced out capacitors and if I don't need inductors I can spend a little more per cap.
  5. Awesome, I can work with that, thank you for sharing that photo.

There's a greater than zero chance these 2500s have a low WAF. While my wife generally likes black speakers I don't think fuzzy ones will do, but we'll see. I like that they already have the Crites diaphragms and all the other extras. On paper they don't have much bass though ... I'm thinking of a demo playlist that will encompass all the music genres I like and have a high dynamic range. What are your H2's like? Cheers
  7. Maz, thanks for the REW suggestion! I pulled out a spare PC and my Audyssey mic and connected them to a small Aiyima A07 amp. Unfortunately the KG4 are in their new home but I tested with my Tekton Lore Monitors and DIY Classix-IIs. In case anyone is interested, their FR graphs almost overlapped across the spectrum (in my dining room) from ~35Hz to 20KHz.

🙂 I have my eyes on some KP2500s, going to Baltimore on Thursday to check them out. There's a fair chance I rework them too. I'd have to go back and check, but I don't think I spent more than $50 per crossover, but I reused inductors from the original and sourced the others from another project's leftover parts. The bass was much more evident and the horn was tamed nicely. It's possible that change was mostly affected by the addition of the L-Pad, I wasn't able to discretely test each additional component to the XOver. (e.g. notch filter & zobel)
  9. Thanks, Randy, Do they benefit from LPads? Are there any published Frequency Response graphs? I'll check the impedance thread for these too. (I have trouble not tinkering) The ones I'm looking at are rat-fur 2500, I bet it'll take a lot of sanding to get that off. 🙂 https://baltimore.craigslist.org/ele/d/owings-mills-klipsch-heresy-speakers/7472393651.html
  10. I have my eyes on a pair of KP250s close by me, would the H3 upgrade work in these too or is the enclosure too different? Assuming my wife hates the KP250 enclosure, has anyone moved the components to a custom box?

Excellent. I rebuilt a pair of KG4s a month ago and they came out great. Unfortunately (for me) they were for my brother and he now is enjoying them. I wish I had gotten REW working for the final frequency response measurements, but oh well. I loved the new sound with a tamed horn and my brother will have them forever.

GL with them. I just got home from being out of town (Not far from B'more) and was about to jump on this.
  13. Hi Everyone, My brother left with the KG4s yesterday evening and I never got a chance to measure them. All I can say is that they exceeded his expectations from when he dropped off the old empty cabinets a month ago. The difference in crossovers transformed the speakers from a horn shouting at you with some muddled bass to a full, rich, detailed system. For those of you that have listened to enough of these, what would you say is the difference in sound from a refurbished KG4 or KG5.5 and the Heresys?
  14. I should have figured, thanks. Yes, that's on my to-do list, I found my mic over the weekend and need to get cracking with the software on my Linux laptop.
  15. 10mH looks to be ideal, I can swap them out fairly easily, I just went with what I had handy. Question, how are you modeling the K80's response?
  16. Hi Maz, That's a 0.2mH on the lower woofer, spec was for 3.0 mH but I didn't have one in my spare parts bin. I need to look above to make certain i didn't have a typo in my post, if I did, sorry, I'll attribute that to insufficient coffee. I can whole heartily confirm that the lower woofer is not down 40db. I can't say what the db's are, but these are far more efficient than any other speakers I have. I didn't catch a negative tone, mostly vexation, which a 500mH value would definitely cause. I appreciate the post though, I've not gotten around to downloading and trying REW yet.
  17. Aside from the impedance difference I can't say what the difference is from a sound perspective. If you have any anecdotal evidence to the difference please post it, I'm curious too.
  18. Final Impedance Chart compared to the original KG4 crossover.
  19. XOs are done and mounted! Impedance for the new setup coming shortly.
  20. Hi All, I have a working XO in the box now, testing at lower volumes, and not glued down, but so far it seems to be working well. I don't think it's a 2.5 way any longer, more like a 2.166 way system. I didn't have a bigger inductor on hand and went with the salvaged one off of the original KG4 crossover. When I ran an impedance sweep of the finished unit with everything buttoned up the Re was about 5.1ohms and it didn't bottom out much below 4. There was only a slight rising impedance at the Fs and the high frequencies were relatively flat. My next steps are to finish XO #1 and then wire up and test #2.
  21. Klipsch KG4 impedance graph using K80 and MidWest Audio MW-5082 woofers. The crossovers are original.
  22. Thanks, Maz, I do have anAudyssey mic from my old Onkyo AVR receiver. If you know off hand, how many grams of weight should be added to the PR to get back to the original ~35hz tuning? Also, keeping with my DATS measurements, here's the KG4 with original Xover impedance in the box using a Dayton DS-315 PR. I hope to rebuild the XOvers this weekend with the new capacitors, impedance correction, and LPad.
  23. Hi Everyone, Update on this slow moving project. I ended up purchasing the MidWest Audio 8" woofers for these speakers since they were the closest to OEM and dropped them in yesterday! Up next is the re-capping the crossovers. Does anyone on the forum know the original added mass of the passive radiator? I'm running the Dayton's without anything yet.
  24. Keeping this thread going for documentation sake. I replaced the ferrofluid today in both tweeters. The one above with the strange looking impedance graph was fairly dry when I went to soak up all the old fluid. Upon replacing it and re-running the tests the impedance is smooth. So, in case anyone comes along in the future, treat it like your car's 100,000 mile checkup.
