  1. I agree with Mr. Phillips...IMO CRT's are "old school" and a technology without a future in home theaters. They are big, heavy, expensive to purchase, and expensive to calibrate and maintain. The CRT's I have seen in "real" (not showroom) home theaters had only a marginally better picture than the Panasonic I ended up buying. IMHO, they just not worth the effort. Just my 2 cents...
  2. Damon, Been there done that and would do it again. Congrats on the new house project. I'm just starting the finish on my HT. Studs are up and ready for action... If you are interested, I am going to start a thread in a week or so in the HT area that chronicles the project. They do that all the time on the AVS Forum, but I thought it might be nice to do it here since it is Klipsch centric. Since there are so many opinions here, I might even pick up a few good ideas along the way... See ya around...
  3. Nice job John. Really fast too! I hope the WOW was for the new sound. These single woofer center channels are not very impressive to look at, but that's what Klipsch made the grills for... I guarantee you that I never had a single negative comment about my 3.5's with the sound pumpin and the grills on... What they don't know won't hurt you... Soooo, welcome to the world of ultimate timbre matching! I hope they give you many years of sonic bliss. Redtop
  4. No... the other guy was in Alabama on the Lousiana border. Too far away. I really hate to ship anything Klipsch. Never heard back from this latest lead. I just keep getting a voicemail. Maybe at that price they are already sold. But thanks again, and keep up the good work!
  5. Do a search on AVSForums.com for "Green Glue". It's an amazing sound proofing product. It's at it's best between two sheets of drywall or between two sheets of sub floor. I've seen a demo and I'm going to use it in the home theater project I'm starting. Highly Recommended! Redtop Disclaimer: I have no financial or other interest in the maker of Green Glue.
  6. John, The grill mounts on mine were magnetic and just "nailed" in the motorboard. I used a screwdriver and gently pryed them out. Pre-driiled a (1/16" smaller than the shank) hole in the new motorboard and hammered away...I mean tapped them in... I sprayed the new motorboard with flat black paint after I had the openings cut out. Brad
  7. I did, but all I got was an answering machine and no call back...yet. Thanks for sniffing these deals out for all of us... Redtop
  8. John, Glad to hear they made it up to corn country! Here is a pic of the finished arrangement for my KG 3.5's. Since you can't get a perfectly balanced placement (a woofer on each side of the horn), HornEd(my mentor on this project)instructed me to cluster all three drivers in the center of the motorboard. Not hard to do and sounded just fine... Hope this helps. Brad
  9. Gotahavit, Where are you located in Atlanta? I'm in the Buford area. I've done the HornEd mod a couple times. Most recently to a KLF-30. If you need any pointers, let me know. Be glad to assist. Redtop
  10. Levi, For me, the problem would be the difference I hear vs. the difference I know. What I mean be that is our minds play tricks on us with this audio stuff. If I had 30's as mains, I would only be happy "knowing" I had a 30 in the center. If you did a blind listening test on me with a properly modified and calibrated 20 in the center, I doubt I could tell the difference. The 20's and 30's share the same mid horn and tweeter, so their voicing is identical. I suspect that any minor difference would be due to the cabinet size and size of the woofers. If I could get a good deal on the 20 on Ebay, I would go for it. If you were to come across a 30 later on, you could always move the 20 to your rear center or sell it modified. Probably way big overkill if placed in the rear channel, but who said us guys on this forum are minimalists... IMO, either way you go, once you have a 20 or 30 as the center you will have stepped up to the next level of audio bliss...
  11. Levi, I can only tell you that I have done the comparision twice with two different Klipsch Speaker lines (KG3.5's and KLF-30's). It is a difference you can hear. There is just something about identical components that expand the soundstage and fill it with seamless beauty. This is especially true (and most important) with the front speaker array, since 80% or more of the sound of most movies is sent there. The C7's are no slouch (I've got three across the back of my HT), but IMO (and to my ears) perfection is only possible with identical drivers and cabinet size. This KLF-20 will make a great front center channel for someone willing to do a HornEd mod to it. Search for "HornEd" by author on this forum and look back about 2 years for more info on that. Hope that helps.
  12. Don't need five John. Just two. I'm thinking I may want to replace the 3.5's in my 2 channel listening area. I've heard from others that the 4.5's offer a little more bass and have a little better soundstage because their horn is a 60x90 degree dispersion vs. the 40x90 degree dispersion of the 3.5's. The WAF requires furniture grade finish. No black. I'll give her that since she let's me upgrade to my listening tastes... Hope your connection in Hoopeston goes well.
  13. Just a heads-up. Here is a link to a single KLF-20 available in CA on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=61378&item=5764664225&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW Can any of you KLF horn heads say "center channel"? Happy Hunting! Disclaimer...I do not have any association financial or otherwise with the seller.
  14. Yeah John, good things come to good guys that wait... I know you will hear the improvement of a seamless front sound stage right away. Once you do, there is no turning back! Now as a favor, if I just can get you and everyone else on this board to keep their eye out for a pair of medium oak 4.5's for me... Happy listening!
  15. Kohill, You wouldn't consider AR to Chicago via Atlanta would you? I'm just teasing of course, but I am in the market for some 4.5's in either light oak or medium oak. If anyone else in the southeast has some, they should contact me. John, It's a small world sometimes...my grandparents farmed just north of Hoopeston in Milford. Had a lot of good times in that area and used to go the July 4th festival in Hoopeston. We all loved the horse shows they had. Sorry for the off topic diversion...
  16. If you are looking to stop sound transfer through any wall, check out a product called Green Glue over at AVSForum. I needs two layers of drywall to work best, but it will stop sound transmission, before it get to the studs. Hope that helps.
  17. Michael, If you haven't already, check out these two long threads at AVS forum. Lots to learn there. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=255432 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=499443 If that is not enough, do a search at AVS on "bass traps" it will bring up several more. Big topic over there... Hope this helps. Brad
  18. If your room is setup for it and you like the direct monopole sound, they work great. They will work best in a situation where the seating is at least 4-6 feet from the back wall. However, I have seen some, like Moon where that is not the case and he is still happy... I have them in mine...KLF-C7's as side and rear surrounds. They sound great. Ultimately, it's your ear that need to be satisfied. Try it, you'll like it...
  19. John, I have one more thought for you... I'm about 200 miles from the guy with the KG4.5's on Audiogon. The speakers are black which is the wrong color for my use. Medium Oak is the only thing that will pass the WAF. I would like to listen and compare them to my KG3.5's for a couple of days. If the seller is willing to meet me half way, I would be willing to purchase them, pick them up, give them a demo, pack and ship them to you for the cost of packing, shipping, and the speakers. It would be worth the effort and price of the gas to me just to have the comparison opportunity. Since they are the wrong color, I can guarantee they won't end up at my place, no matter how good they sound... E-mail me through the forum if you are interested.
  20. John, I don't know if you've seen this or not, but here is a link on Audiogon.com for some 4.5's. It's local pickup only and I don't know where you are located. Hopefully Lafayette, GA. If you can't get them I might take a crack at them. KG 4.5's... http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1113080512 Good luck!
  21. John, I do have some extra KG3.5's (he he he ), but they are a set of six (including the center mod) and I am planning on keeping them to replace the KLF's in my theater when I sell my house. I did some checking on the Klipsch web site and a KG 3.5 will not be as good of a match for your 4.5's as another 4.5. The horn is different and while the voice will be close, it will not be perfect. If you are going to all the work of modifiying a floorstanding speaker into a center channel, I would be patient, go for "perfection" in the match, and wait to find a pair of 4.5's on Ebay or Audiogon. Just my opinion though...
  22. John, The 3.5's have a single mid/high driver, a standard 8" woofer and a port. Here is a pic of the finished mod. the positions of the drivers were based upon the direction of HornEd. Once the grill was back on, it didn't look quite so funky... Oh, and did I mention it sounded great? Hope this helps.
  23. October 1979... Newly married and looking for some speakers at the local stereo shop. Heard some Lascalas and nearly pee-ed my pants. Soooooo sweet. The new bride saw the look on my face and walked me to the door. Probably saved our marriage (at least financially)... It took 15 more years to finally get some Klipsch, but it was worth the wait! Still have the lovely bride and the Klipsch too... Life is good!
  24. John, I feel your pain... When I first found this forum, I had a similar setup with KG 3.5's and a KV-2 across the front. I was looking for help on the surrounds. Keith (T2K) offered some help and suggested KG 2.5's for the rears. It was nice step in the right direction and I have always appreciated his help to a forum newbie. Like you, I felt something was missing in the center channel. I noticed several discussions on this forum about center channels that were "matched" by taking an identical speaker (KG4.5 in your case) and horizontalizing it, shielding it, and making it a center channel. I found a matching KG3.5 and did the mod. WOW...what a difference it made. I have been a big advocate of timbre matched speakers ever since. I have tried many configurations and combinations since and found that the front speaker array is the most important to match as most movies send nearly 100% of the sound to the L/R fronts and Center channel. If you are interested in this topic do a search on "horned center" in the home theater forum. You can also do a search by author on "redtop" and you will find a thread on my conversion project from about 2 years ago. Hope this helps.
  25. Still enjoying them I'm guessing... There have been several recent threads comparing the 7's against the 30's. What do you think? P.S. I've still got mine if you need another pair to match...
