  2. ---------------- PR: Idle curiousity, what field and what subject have you chosen to do your dissertation? ---------------- Broken ore flow in ore passes (related to mining engineering). I'm doing quite a lot of numerical modelling with a distinct element code (PFC3D).
  3. Christ, To say I had a chuckle while seing this is an understatement... Fun part is that Never Mind the Bollock is actually blasting through the Lampoofs.

How many glasses of wine did you drink when you compared the Atoms to the originals ? Its funny Kelly use to advocate the Atoms for the HF-81 . Kelly emailed me asking me to save him a set for his amp I guess he thoguht I was going to call them a buy them out LOL !! Craig ---------------- The two times I had the chance to compare yielded the same results. The poor Sprague sounded a bit anemic compared to the Astron. The JJ would be better replacements than the Atoms and this for maybe $3 more. The Cerafines are better but these should be reserved for the elite, which I am a part of.

  6. ---------------- On 9/8/2003 4:01:05 PM NOSValves wrote: I ask Kelly if he wanted to Wife swap once and are relationship fell apart not long after that so watch there Jeff ---------------- It depends on the wife Craig... As for the Cerafines, they fit and these sound darn good. Expensive maybe but the improvement is worthed the price. Let me buy the rest of the lot at Angela before ordering from him.

I am scared to touch my original EICO since the damn thing sounds so natural and great, bettering any of the HF-81 I have heard, despite STILL using those damn ****ty caps. Jeff has his still in place too but needs a fix. I have amps in-house with mega parts galore but refuse to touch this first EICO (my second EICO is another story). kh ---------------- Yep I pretty much think the Sprague Atom are a step down over the Astron Drylitics. Saddly all but one Eico who passed in my hand had these Astron pretty much dead. The Cerafines were a step up indeed and pushed this little amp in a whole other league. Saddly the supply of these has dried up. If I remember well Chris also tried the Cerafine 60 USD improvement on his Eico and was pretty happy with it. Until he sold the beast.

Greg, I wasn't too shy to go to the bank for these.I imagine your reluctance had more to do with the look of love. SSH ---------------- Rest of the energy was absorbed by the grids and the filaments. I still can't believe the tubes survived the gravity induced fall. That's definitively a good advertising for Sovtek and Mullard.

Sadly, I STILL prefer STYXX to Journey if not just for that little sap Tommy Shaw on the guitar who made me laugh whether trying or not. Still, I try to block this time of popular music out of my head. There was so much interesting stuff happening below the radar... kh ---------------- Can we get enough of Suite Madame Blue... The final on the guitar is so inspiring.
  11. ---------------- On 9/8/2003 11:29:06 AM DeanG wrote: Though I'm sure those amps sound very sweet -- I don't think the Zebrawood has much to do with it. Enjoy!! ---------------- WHAT??? Zebrawood must account for 21.67% of the really nice sound of these amps. Quartersawn zebrawood is said to help reducing microphonics due the near perfectly alligned wood grain, thus dissipating the mechanical vibrations induced to the copper top plate. I think I read that on the KR website. Zebrawood did such wonder to the sound that my 2A3 PP chassis will also be in zebrawood. No... wait, this is for Nancy not to notice there was a change of amps.

An Inability to control your drinking: It seems that regardless of what you decide beforehand, you frequently wind up drinking too much. This includes drinking all of the available Red Wine at any residence you visit. It also includes drinking all of the Red Wine before friends arrive. You use alcohol to escape your problems. This includes escaping from Quebec, or living in Quebec. Changing from your usual reserved character into the "life of the forum". Posting, or being heard on MP3 files of dubious quality would be an example of this. A change in personality -- does drinking turn you from Dr. Music to Mr. SET? Blackouts -- sometimes you don't remember what happened when you were drinking. Sometimes you don't remember what you were drinking when you blacked out. Alcohol blocks the messages going to your brain and alters your vision and hearing. It also blocks messages on answering machines going to, and coming from Quebec. ---------------- Wow! Wine give my that quick fix I'm looking for... The fun of it is that after two bottles, all rectifiers sounds alike so I can listen to some music instead of concentrating on tube rolling. So in a way, wine help to ease my "journey" to audio. After 4 bottles, I might be drunk enough to listen to Journey on my audio system (yet...). Note: Post was edited

I have always been a bit suspect about this beast and ole Jeffus sure had it hidden under the bed when I arrived. We have debated that amp back and forth for a few years. It's either TOO hot, too badly bias, too big, too good, or too something for ole Kelly to hear. I gave him some hell last time and he got bent outta shape and refused to open the third bottle of red. Swine. I had to console him and things got better. The Tenor still slept under bed however... kh ---------------- Remember, funny boy, that you left Quebec one day earlier without your freakin TT rack and without hearing the Tenor (as what was originally planned). Hearing the Tenor and going back to "normal" amps have the same effect on me than spending 1 month in Southern France then going back in our God Blessed North American Continent. Cultural shock to say the least... A trip to Tenor Audio's office is planned for November. This will come just in time with the heating season for the living room. So you might consider bringing some decent wine this time (though the horror you came with did OK as "sauce wine").

He brings up the good point, "What's the best, a slow well filtered PSU where all rectifier sounds equal OR a fast nimble "adequately" filtered PSU where the rectifier will have more of an influence. I'll vote personally for the 2nd options for the "simple SET designs." ---------------- Yep, And I'll stand by this considering the case of "simple SET design" in the genre that Wavelength, Welborne, Wright, etc. build Too much filtering will sound just "dead" to me. But it must be said that the wimpy PSU of a simple SET may appear as a joke for many. I personally rarely use more than 100 uF total capacitance in my PSU (though I rarely use less too). I am not absolutely commited to tube rectification though and my still favorite amp, the Tenor dual furnace use SS rectification (well implemented it must be said).

Although some FLQ and separtist members might prefer the Sex Pistols' version of God Save the Queen. ---------------- Language police is not to active in Quebec City don't worry. It sad that they went for such stupid cases in Montreal, particularly this poor West Island plummer that had his truck confiscated. Their lack of common sense actually had a perverted effect on the Bill 101. This bill had valid reasons, from a francophone perspective at least. Sadly the language police being as stupid just enraged the anglophones in Montreal by their nit-picking. Of course the rest of the anglophones of Canada jumped in the debate. Of course the medias picking up these silly examples and letting the impression than every anglophone owned boutique, shop etc. was closely monitored by scrupulous Nazi policeman (which case it wasn't) didn't help either.

Stay at a neat Bed and Breakfast in the Plateau Mont-Royal and you are in for a treat. It's inexpensive and beautiful with some culture and style. BTW, Stripes have been problems for some time... kh ---------------- You scoop me from two minutes on these pictures... I'm so sad that nobody but the "squeegees" at the traffic lights near my place undertstand the beauty of this shirt. Not even Ole Nancy... Montreal is a marvelous city indeed.
