roddey
Hello everyone! I took people's advice here and changed the horn to a pair of Altec 511b's. These were in P.A. Cabs and fit the top of the La Scala's well. Only about a quater of an inch wider. I also damped the horn with air. cond. and heating putty that works well. About 12# of the stuff. These allready had tar around the front lip area from the factory. I added to the tar with the putty.. Made a difference. They sound more like wood than metal now when I thump them with my fingernails.. These also have the 4500 Hz crossover mod for the sqwaker and Bob's new tweaters in them with new caps. Here it is: Sounds better. Distortion at higher listening levels went away. I am now done.(do you really believe that?) roddey
roddey
I do have one question. Would it be better to bring the tweeter on top of the PA Cab and put it inline with the squaker driver for timing issues? Or just leave it alone? Thanks for any answer. J.4knee
I too use 511b's with my LS. Question why did you opt to move your crossover point on the squawker/tweeter with the 511b? They should not have the same issue as the K400's do. I too use the Bob's tweeters but I use Al's Universal networks and left the crossover point untouched. I've heard this mod with AA/A networks and K400 horns and did enjoy the sound but since you've moved the problem child out of your system the squawker/tweeter crossover point mod should really not be needed. Don't get me wrong it is your system and I am not trying to tell you what to do but I am just curious what prompted this mod in addition to changing out the squawker horns? Anyway looks good .............enjoy!!!! EDIT: I leave my tweeter where it normally is in the LS cabinet and like it there.
roddey
The 4500 mod was allready done before I found the Altec horns. I read that the k55v have a hard time with clean reproduction levels above 4500 hz. so I left that alone. Am I making a mistake here? Should I change it back? J.4knee
If you like it leave it. I was just curious.
colterphoto1
leave the tweeter up high but not too high. everyone knows that higher frequencies naturally drift upwards in the room anyway.
roddey
Ok thanks. I will move the tweeter inline with the woofer and mid. With leaving the round part of the 511b sticking out front of the LaScala it lines up with the woofer driver so the only one out of line isthe tweeter. I will try moving it up just a couple inches above thesquawker. Thanks.

gearfreak
oooh. I like that hardware. Good idea and nice implementation! Sure beats my "2 511B's mounted on green table legs" approach. :-)
