  1. I took a good look at that option .... I ruled it out for now .... 2 x the drivers and 2 x the crossovers = 2 x the cost of my current three ideas. Maybe a project for the future. Hey .... Can a MWM bin be mounted vertically in a 15x20 room with no ill effects??? pushed back into the corners .... that would move it up my list
  2. Hey all ... been kicking around what to do next for my audio fun. I already have in my possession a pair of 511B's with K55v's and a pair of APT 200's. They have been playing as the tops with my La Scala bass bins using AA crossovers. I recently reassembled my split La Scalas into their original configuration, so the 511/APT combo is looking for a new task. I am looking at three options ... all of which will require a new crossover ... so I can build which ever ends up being needed Option #1: Which was my original concept is building a Cornscala. Easy enough to build the box and the crossover. Very versatile and could easily be used in my main room replacing my La Scalas for daily use or down in the guest room. But I want Big Bass ... not sure that I will get it here. Option #2: following in Detls footsteps and building 2 single MWM bins. Same costs as the Cornscala (drivers and crossover).... just more lumber. While I could never use these upstairs ... I could use them in the downstairs guest room and occasionally pull them out for BBQ duty. I have heard Claudes rig and really dig the BIG bass sound which I know I will never get with the Cornscala. For starters I would build 2 bins and run them in stereo using an AA crossover ... modified if needed. Step 2 would be to run the 511's and APT's on 8 watts of 300B triode and the bass bins off a XTi 1000 using the DSP crossover( I have both already) ... Option 3#: would be to get some K-Horn bass bins (forum member in Detroit has some and we have emailed). These would not work in my main room, but would be used in the downstairs guest room but still would need false corners to maximize the sound. I have never had K-Horns and would love to have the experience ... still get big bass ... but comes with the placement limitations of a K-Horn, so not as versatile as the other two options. Just looking for random thoughts from the Forum. Those with Cornscalas ... how big is the bass ... in a 15x20 room??? Those with MWM's ... can I run them up to 400hz to mesh with the 511's using an AA crossover ???
  3. Wow ... nice find ... the natural wood LSI's ... while not totally rare ... are pretty hard to come by ... where did you find them. Don't worry too much about the scratches ... just run them for awhile .... maybe rehab the crossovers. What are you gonna run them with?? Welcome to the madness.
  4. I'll stick to my Brunettes ... they always show me a good time.
  5. I occasionally run it through the main channels, but for the most part .... the less knobs to adjust the better .... mostly working on motorbikes so my hands are often greasy ... thats why I keep tape on the two knobs I need to touch.
  6. Hey Mike .... I am going to be finishing my Cornscalas over the winter ... I have my tops done already, I used the same tweeter and an Altec 511B's. I just need to get to the bass bins done ... only hold up is $$ The dimensions you gave for your bins ... is that external dimensions ... based on 3/4 ply ... or is that internal dimensions. What is the latest figure for internal volume of a Cornscala Bass Bin?? I was just about to start sifting through all the threads ... figure I will start my research here by asking you.
  7. Yes .... What every garage needs !!!!! I have these KP-201's driven by this Macrotech 600 with a signal coming from this iPod and Mackie I have them on a shelf up by the ceiling ... sitting upside down to get the woofer near the roof .... about 15' apart ... sounds fantastic.
  8. Well ... there have been updates and additions ... but in the form of Twins .... a boy and a girl. Desert trips are on hold until they are a bit older. Next addition is a 1000w inverter running off a 225ah deep cycle .... my math says it'll run my Macrotech 600 for about 7 hours ... probably test it this winter ... temps have been over 100deg for the last three months ... been a real hot summer.
  9. Yes ... really we are talking about two different topics. Digital photography as a tool is a great thing. Digital Photogaphy has changed the "photographic Industry" in a direction that does not agree with me. I don't really need to comment more on it ... much better to have a discussion over a beer and hash these topics out in person. Something my old school friends and I have done a few times. I used to work on many crews for many photographers. Now I only work for one guy. We have a crew of 3 assistants who all came through the film ranks. All 1st assistants. While we photograph all digital ... the approach is from a very film direction, meaning .... Looking at the light and the composition first ... then taking the image. Many of the digital era photogs and assistants want instant gratification.... meaning .... making the image first .... then looking at a monitor to see what it looks like. Make no mistake ... I believe in digital photography ... It is an awesome tool .... It is the way it is used that often rubs me wrong.
  10. and i respectfully disagree with you. The craftsmanship is gone. Yes there is a new set of tools, and if those tools were applied correctly, it would open up an entirely new creative direction. But the simplicity with which a digital camera can perfectly expose a frame ... is not used to allow the photographers more time for creativity .... it is used to pump out mass produced images. And I have to agree with Colter .... no amount of photoshop can make up for crappy light. We have art directors having us shoot at noon on a sunny day. There is no fixing that .... But the better way to think of it is .... There is no reason to HAVE to fix it ..... we did not need photoshop before ... because we were given the time to get it right in the field. It should be the same ... its just f-stops and shutter speeds .... but trust me ... from the field .... it is not the same. There are now "Proffesional" photographers that can not make an f-stop conversion from Velvia to TriX. They just can't. They can take fine photographs ... but their understanding of light and how it works .... is not there. different times for sure .... and thats why I chose to step away. But I must say .... I do miss the days of making exposure calculations as the sun is setting and your photographing a black car in the desert with howling wind ...... on 8x10 film .... You really felt fulfilled that you were a pro when you could nail it every day. Now you just go look at the monitor ... yawn.
  11. My story ... is actually documented here on the forum somewhere. I was putting on a birthday party for my girlfriend. We wanted tunes on a dry lakebed .... and I was planning on generators and powered JBL's ... then I stumbled upon the SI T-amp with 8w of power ... I knew I could pull the party off with La Scalas and a battery powered T-amp ..... The La Scalas have not made it out to the lakebed again .... they take up the main slot in the house. I have a set of KP-201's that do just fine with the t amp for campfire listening.
  12. Same vibe here ... I still work as a 1st assistant for one photographer ... We go out in the summers and do dealer brochures for Honda motorcycles on location. I tend to say that digital took the "Craft" out of photography. I feel it is still a profession ... but the dedication to craft and making a quality product has been thrown out the window. More and faster are the only concepts left in professional photography.
  13. 501CM ..... yep on the 150mm though.... my lenses are 50, 100, 150 ..... a body and a couple backs your into it for 10k real quick
  14. Road triping across the country next week ... here are my weapons of choice( photographed with a digi cam ...ha)
  15. Lets see My Hasselblad is loaded with TriX, My F3 has Velvia in it, My Linhof consumes a steady diet of 4x5 Tmax .... I even have a 8mm Bolex that get a few spools of positive B&W run thru it for projection in my Bolex projector. I still fire up my darkroom regularly Film is only dead if you allow it to be
  16. The best way would to use a iPod dock to RCA cable .... this gives you a line out signal from the iPod and skip some of the internal parts .... the second best way would be to use a mini headphone to RCA cable and use the headphone jack .... this way make the volume control on the Ipod functional .... but has the signal going thorugh the internal iPod amp. either way ... you can use AUX or CD input .. anything listed as Line IN .... NOT Phono IN

  18. Welcome .... thats a pretty wide open question ... lots of people here with lots of knowledge .... but you need to lead them down a path. $1500 is plenty of budget ... but what is your end goal??? Concert level volume ... or perfect detail ... (or both) What kind of music do you listen to?? Do you want to dabble in tubes ... or go solid state?? What kind of source gear do you have .... or do you need an integrated unit?? Give us some direction
  19. Oh ... I see the ports now ... KP-250
  20. OK ... thanks for the replies ... sounds like the features of the Rythmik plate amp are a good thing to have.
  21. Easiest build with the best sound without the difficulty of build or placement of a K-horn .... easy, but its technically not a Klipsch product Cornscala combines the Mid and High horns from a K-horn and the direct radiator of the Cornwall. lots of info and plans here on the site.
  22. I only kind of know the answer. Basically an XLR is a 3 wire connection used mostly in Pro gear ... the signal is carried on + and - and the ground is the sheild. RCA only uses 2 wire and is used in consumer gear. Anything changing RCA to XLR is kind of cheating .... some where along the way, the - is being combined with the ground. Balanced offers better resistance to noise in the cable runs used in professional installations.
  23. What about searching the used market for a mint condition .... Used Crown D-75A ..... one sold here a while back for less than $300. It is an amp that will last a life time ... You are mentioning mono block amps, so I assume you have a preamp. Tubes on a budget, does not make sense. I have Bottlehead Paramounts in a 300B ... they are awesome, but not really a lots of watts for the dollar. I say stay solid state for now ... later in life upgrade to tubes and keep the D-75A/Heresy rig as a bedroom/ office system.
