colterphoto1
From the looks of the line-up, I think it's a 'put together' band, this is their debut show. Perhaps something will be in the works if it's well received. Steve Allee (piano) is the father of Jazz Kitchen owner/manager David Allee. colterphoto1
This may be a kind of homage band- hmm interesting. Unfortunately I'll be doing another show on the 17th so can't attned. As JC may well know, SUPERFUNK was an album by the band Funk Inc, formed in INDIANAPOLIS in 1969 More from Amazon: Highly regarded in soul-jazz circles, organ combo Funk, Inc. hasspecialized in a very accessible, groove-oriented blend of jazz, funkand R&B. The group was founded in Indianapolis in 1969 by organistBobby Watley, who recruited tenor saxman Eugene Barr, guitarist SteveWeakley, drummer Jimmy Munford and conga player Cecil Hunt. In theearly 1970s, the original lineup came to the attention of Bob Porter, awell respected producer who signed Funk, Inc. to Prestige and paved theway for the band to record five albums for that label. After stressingimprovisation on its first three albums Funk, Inc., Chicken Lickin' andHangin' Out, Funk, Inc. started to lose its way in the mid-1970s andturned to heavier production, more arranging and background vocals. This slicker approach led to tension within the group, and Funk, Inc.broke up in 1976. Watley continued to play live gigs on his own in theMidwest, and it wasn't until the mid-1990s that he would organize a newFunk, Inc. lineup. With Britain's acid jazz scene having focusedattention on Funk, Inc.'s work, Watley organized a new lineup thatincluded Hunt and newcomers Teddy Patterson (alto & tenor sax),Doug Swanigan (guitar) and Phil Brines (drums). Sadly, original membersMunford and Barr had died. With this lineup in place and Funk, Inc.recording for Prestige once again, the band entered the studio in 1995and recorded its first album in 21 years, Urban Renewal. It was alsoduring that 1990s that Fantasy reissued some of Funk's 1970s efforts onCD. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
