Sonic Frontiers / 6922 based Preamps

I know Mobile isn't too thrilled with them but I really like them - especially with the several different solid state amps I've had over the last year.

I almost bought the AE-3 but ran across a great deal on a Line 1 and couldn't resist the temptation to give it whirl. It's a sharp looking piece with a really nifty remote.

What I did last week was hook up my AE-25 through it because I wanted to see how it did with movies -- and I needed the additional switching functions of the preamp. I've been very happy with the performance of the two pieces combined with movies.

Later in the week I got around to listening to more music and felt too lazy to unplug the AE-25 from the Line 1, move the CD interconnects and speaker cables -- so I just popped a CD in. I was very suprised at how different it sounded as opposed to just using the AE-25 as a stand alone with the volume control.

The midrange withdrew a quite a bit and there was less bite. It sounded noticably warmer and richer. The bass was also a little tighter sounding with some additional 'oomph' -- this could have been a result of having a less pronounced midrange.

It sounds very good -- but certainly different.

At any rate -- the Line 1 sounds great whether mated to the Bryston or the AE-25.

At least in my system with the RF7's -- the 6922 fairs pretty well. I would have no idea how to complain about it.
