i just (finally) got my set up- denon 2802, SF2, SS1, SC 1, and KSW10.

but i need a primer on dolby, 5.1, surround, dts etc..

what's the differences?

also, if a movie is listed as DOLBY, does that mean it's surround or 5.1?? what about regualar HBO movies, without the dolby symbol? do these sound different than the ones that state dolby?

any/all help would be greatly appreciated!!

Okay

Dolby B,C that would be noise reduction of sorts this was the talk of the town back in the day of the tape deck and used in film today

Dolby Surround Left/Right stereo while the surrounds are mono and the same signal goes to both

Dolby Pro Logic same as above but add in the center channel

Dolby Pro Logic 2 not sure best guess would be 5 channel stereo

Dolby Digital 5 descrete channels of sound all full range and and a .1 for the LFE hence the subwoofer

Dolby Digital EX and an extra channel for a center rear surround plus the .1

DTS digital theater surround a rival of Dolby 5.1

DTS ES rival of Dolby Digital EX (6.1)

this should help you some

in addition to jt's great primer, u may also wanna check out www.dtsonline.com

some movie channels like hbo, showtime, starz do broadcast certain movies in DD 5.1 (i've even got a few

in DD 5.1 EX lately).

to get that though you need a digital cable tv or sat box that has a digital audio output (usually optical for sat & coax for cable tv) that you run into a digital input of your receiver or pre/pro.
