KLF-C7 vs RC-64

I'm currently using a KLF-C7 with a pair of Forte I's for my front soundstage. I know it's not ideal in terms of timbre matching, but I previously had an Academy and actually prefer the KLF-C7 because my ears prefer the extra clarity and openness over the Academy. I'm now thinking of stepping up the sound by upgrading the crossover and installing Bob Crites' titanium tweeter. This would bring up the total cost of the speaker roughly in the ballpark of a used RC-64.

So this got me thinking -- why not get an RC-64 and replace the Fortes with either RF-83, 82, 63, or 62 instead? Since I use my system almost exclusively for HT, the priority here is to have the best center channel. The mains and rears will be picked to match the center.

Has anybody ever compared an upgraded KLF-C7 to an RC-64? Is the difference big enough to justify switching to the Reference series or does the crossover/tweeter upgrade close the gap considerably?

I should also note that I've owned Forte II, Chorus II, and now Forte I so I am familiar with the extended Heritage sound and love it. I haven't heard any of the Reference series, old or new, so I have no point of reference to make this comparison.

Wall of Sound,

Welcome to the forum.

First, get the titanium diaphragms for your Forte's and KLF-C7 and try things out. I noticed instant improvement when I did. Being used to the Reference sound(titanium tweets), I was able to hear a huge difference.

The RC-64 is a kick butt center channel. Very detailed with plenty of bass and smooooth.

Take a look at my family room configuration and you will see I have a two system setup(Reference HT & Ex. Heritage 2-channel). With that said, I listen to music just as often with the RF-63 setup(2 channel and 5.1) as I do with the Forte's. If room and $$$ permit, get either Ref. setup and run a 2 channel rig with your Fortes and sell the KLF-C7 to recoupe some $$$ spent. JMO.

Thanks willland, I forgot to mention that I already upgraded my Forte I's with Bob Crites crossover, his titanium diaphragm, and phenolic mid. I agree that the difference is remarkable, which is why I'm considering modding the KLF-C7 as well.

You are very lucky to have multiple Klipsch systems in different rooms! Since you have the Fortes as well, can you describe the difference between the Heritage sound signature vs Reference?

My response in this thread pretty much sums it up.
