To upgrade or not to upgrade?

i have the first 4.1 verison(i think) and they are terrible, i cant have them loud at all, they hiss at times crackle at 30% volume.. i had them rma'd once cuz i had the sound like about 40% up, and a song came on i had listed in winamp (Stan by eminem) and it totaly killed the sub, and killed the sat's. it wasnt even loud and that song came on and distroted every speaker.. So ive tryed to listen to them low, and every song i have to mess with winamps equal. cuz some songs distort the sub and some distort the tweaters.

i have a sound blaster augidy w/ newest drivers. ie upgraded many times, and i even hooked them up to my cd player and they still sound nasty.

So my question is is it worth buying the new 50+ dollar preamp and cables? or sound i buy new speakers?

thanks

BTW, i got these from www.alienware.com in june'01 and they were rma'd around october.

im still not sure if there the bad verison or the good 4.1's, the book says 4.1/120 on it.. and from looking at the new peramp it says it has a new headphone jack, well mine has the headphone jack, so im still un-sure. these sound ok at REALLY low volume, but when i up the voulme to 9 o'clock or higher they sound really distorted.. im Really unhappy with them. i a guy where i need my music louder then everything around me, i mean i can still hear my pc fans over my speakers and thats just not what id like. so im really lost about what to do, i dont have the money to buy new speakers and i dont wanna buy cables and the newer peramp if it wont do much.

any idea's?

thanks

well you don't have the first 4.1's, they were called the promedia v2.400.

you should have the new preamp, the CP-1, if you have the headphone output.

contact klipsch about replacing these, dont alter them or open them, you will void the warranty. i would get them replaced, something is not right.

why is it taking this long to get them replaced? did this just start up?

well i had them replaced by alienware once, and they are still sounding terrible when i have the voulme up. im not blasting them but after 9 o'clock as youd say they start sounded bad. some songs there fine, but high bass/terble songs kill the speakers.. i have to run the speakers full terble, and no bass. the sub seems fine, altho it gets Really hot even in sandby. so it seems the satilites are the prob.. im thinking of doing that spreaker wire mod, But i wanted to hear from you guys first. i mean i have a 4+ year old setero by phillups thats 120w each speaker and it kills these klipschs not even at full volume. id like to be able to have these at 50% volume so i can really feel the bass but like i said they get all nasty sounding after the 9 o'clock on the volume.

any ideas?

if i can get these working id like to make the wire mod, and buy those wall mounts, cuz im moving into a new house and its wood flooring, so the speakers on the walls and the sub on the floor should sound nice..

thanks again

i would get them replaced again, i am better it is not the speakers but the amp not working, the crackle and heat make me think this. does alienware have a warranty on them, or would you send them to klipsch.

sorry it took me so long to reply, just saw this post again.

i noticed you said that you had your speakers volume at 9 o'clock. Why would you need to turn it that loud? Mine never go past half way and I'm deafened by them. What I did was Turn the Main Volume on the control pod to 12 o'clock, and use the volume on my keyboard to alter volume. when its cranked its waaay too loud, and its only half way...Plus having the KeySpan remote (thank you justin for posting a while ago on that - its a savior) alters the computer volume. Its just a suggestion. That might help your crackling, if not, maybe its the condition of your cds/mp3 files, but then again, its probbaly the control pod. Im yelling out random ideas, feel free to ignore me anytime Smile.gif

Hi,

I have the Klipsch THX ProMedia 4.1 speakers and sub-woofer from Alienware as well. They work and sound great. However, I still can't get over the fact that Klipsch "neglected" to incorporate a simple on/off switch into them. Whenever I want to totally shut down my rig I have to fight that ever growing tangling array of wires behind my desk in order to yank the plug on the Klipschs. And its kinda dark and scarey Redface.gif way back there where the surge protector is and I've yanked the wrong plug several times unplugging components that I would've rather remained plugged in. So 1/2 the time I just leave them on but that ever glowing green light kinda haunts me because I know some electronic gizmos ( like the amplifier for one! ) in them are burning for no good reason. I also have a pair of Advent Powered Partners hooked up and its a real horse race as to which speakers sound better to me. I'm kinda leaning towards the APPs but I just keep them all screaming and they accentuate each other well and I'm pleased with the sound. The volume control knob on the Klipschs does crackle every time I adjust volume on them but just momentarily. Maybe a little electronics cleaner in there would help. I keep the sub-woofer on a pillow to lessen the vibration of that bad boy on my computer and more than a few times its emptied my ashtray all over the floor with the blasts of air that pulse out of it! *cough* I know, I'm trying. That's my $.02 worth. bobc1 Rolleyes.gif

don't turn them off like that! it can cause the power supply in the promedia's to fail. just leave them on, it will cost you like a nickel a year. well, i don't REALLY know how much it would cost but i bet you will not notice it. it will put less wear and tear on the speakers than unplugging them. they go into low power mode when not used for a while.

what was its score at pc pitstop.com?

my nearly 2 year old sony pIII 800Mhz 512mb SDRAM scored BETTER than my brother's P4 1.8Ghz 512 DDRAM... given his computer had a VERY nasty virus and a corrupt system file... hahah.

Hi Justin_tx,

That settles it then. I'll just keep the ProMedias plugged in all the time. My Advent Powered Partners have that "sleep" mode on them as well but the green power light will dim in order to let me know that they're taking a nap. I guess because the green power light on the ProMedias don't dim that I assumed they were fully powered up waiting to receive a signal. I only perused the owners manual when I first got them so maybe I'll search this "black hole" of a desk and see if I can find it again and "read it" this time. Thanx for the info Justin_tx. Bob.
