Help with DVD audio please

Recommended Posts

I just got my Toshiba SD-5700 DVD player/DVD Audio player today and I love it.

I was very excited to try out the new DVD Audio technology, so I ran out and bought "B.B. King & Eric Clapton- Riding with the King".

It sounds great, but I have a few questions.

1. The case says that it has 4 ways to output.

Advanced Resolution Surround

Advanced Resolution Stereo

DVD-Video compatible Dolby Digital

And DTS 5.1 Surround Sound

But when I put in the disk it only gives me the options of Surround or Stereo.

Which do I choose for best sound?

2. Why does my receiver not highlight DTS? It says it is reading Liner PCM

3. What is your favorite DVD Audio disk?

Thanks everyone,

Schmidty

s, congrats. my guess is you have to go to the player's set up & choose the correct settings.

you do have to use the analog outputs on the player to get the adv res (dvd-audio) format playin. if your receiver doesn't have the 6 direct inputs you'll have to settle for the 2 channel.

sounds like u also need to turn the dts on in the player also.

should all be covered in the manuals. Smile.gif

Thanks Boa,

So I can't use my Digital Canare Coaxial Cable and get Advanced Res? My only other choices are Optical, 5.1CH, or 2CH. My Receiver is 5.1, but 6.1 compatible (Whatever that means)

s, you can still use that optical connect for the other

stuff but to get that true dvd-audio adv/high res you have to use the player's mlp (meridian lossless pakaging) decoder (or is it depackager? Smile.gif), & therefore the analog connections from it to the receiver.

if your receiver doesn't have direct inputs (should be at least 6 of 'em) then you'll have to settle for the stereo w/ the analog inputs for say dvd (the rca jacks). u can connect to an input like cd that's not being used for a digital connection like the dvd for 5.1.

then you'll want to play the 2 channel adv res format on a dvd-audio disk to get that. you can still play dolby & dts & pcm (cd) off the digital connection. regular cd (pcm) may sound better w/ either depending on the sound quality of the receiver vs the player.

hopefully someday soon the industries can get together on a common digital connection so the receiver can do the adv res w/ it's own processor. that's what i'm waiting for to make the big move to those higher res.

Since my DVD Player does not have 6 analog outputs (only the 5.1ch analog and digital), can it use its full potential? It says "6ch output" in the DVD Player output menu.

Thank you so much, again!!!

Your Toshiba DVD-Audio player has the 6 channel outputs. You must connect them to your 6 channel INPUTS ON YOUR RECEIVER(if it has them, and it must)to take advantage of the DVD-Audio.

yea s we're counting the .1 as the 6th channel/output/input. it is a 6th channel - the LFE (low frequency effects) channel.

it's meant to carry .1 (1/10) the bandwidth of a full-range channel hence the .1. the input/output/and cables are the same though so you use a full cable to the sub input of the 6 inputs. don't use just 1/10 of a cable/interconnect. Smile.gif

s, yes though sparse so far. dts es 6.1 discrete. 6 discrete full range channels + the .1 LFE channel = 7.

though to do it you need at least an additional rear center speaker, a 6th powered channel/output on your receiver, and a decoder in the receiver with dts es 6.1 discrete capability.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to go into settings again and see if that holds the answer. I also found a procedure for "resetting" the player from the JVC website that involves a pretty complicated process of unplugging it, holding down 2 different buttons while you plug it back in etc, etc. I hope this works.

I'M NEW TO THIS STUFF, BUT WANTED TO REPLY TO YOU BECAUSE I TO JUST GOT A TOSH. 5700 AND WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH DTS, ETC. SO YOU PROBABLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM BY NOW. IF NOT READ THIS: The DVD-Audio specification requires PCM audio while the Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG audio formats are optional.

11/15/2000 - For compatibility with DVD-Video players, DVD-Audio discs can include audio encoded in Dolby Digital and DTS formats that satisfy the DVD-Video specification.

However, DVD-Audio players automatically default to the highest level of DVD specification. Therefore, a DVD-Audio player will only recognize the PCM DVD-Audio tracks on a DVD-Audio disc and will NOT recognize Dolby Digital or DTS audio tracks recorded at the DVD-Video specification. Although these Dolby Digital and DTS tracks are playable on a DVD-Video player, they are invisible to a DVD-Audio player. This applies even if the player supports the DVD-Video specification.
