By the way I would definitely set the Heresys to small. If you have a sub there is no point in forcing the Heresys to try to duplicate what the sub should be doing.

If the receiver is set up to "know" that you have a sub and you want your mains to be considered small, it will send lower freq material (<80hz) to the sub during movies or music.

My understanding of these JBL boxes is that there arent many subs out there that will out-output them. That said, they do drop off pretty quickly below 30hz. So it depends on your tastes I guess. I love mine but I too wonder if lots more extension might be worth sacrificing some of the face-melting output this beast has. It occurs to me as I write this that most of us are doing this with the cheapo PE amp and if I am not mistaken the box is rated for 800w continuous and 1600w peak. In summary, my guess is you would like the deeper extension but would immediately miss the "slam" that you would be giving up. Dan

What is tickle? Why is it not a good idea to turn the sub amp down while turning up receiver sub output? And finally, I just assumed that leaving sub amp on 24/7 would put unnecessary wear on the amp. Admittedly, I am not an electronics guy.

I have wondered the same thing. I gave up a long time ago...I just get up and turn the amp off manually before going to bed. Sorry thats no help. Dan

There was a discussion about this very topic some time ago. I have only a rudimentary understanding of the physics of sound but I recall someone making the claim that the lowest audible sounds have a wavelength of 30-something feet and therefore cannot be heard in a room that is smaller than that. Given that logic, only frequencies above what...200hz can be heard with headphones? Just my .02

I would love to get some sort of EQ into my system but with my current listening room, the WAF of bringing yet another piece of equipment in would be unacceptable. Either I am really lucky with room acoustics or perhaps its "ignorance is bliss" and I like the way it sounds because I have yet to hear it really optimized. I think someday I will get something like the PB2plus but right now I love my JBL and it was pretty inexpensive. Just my 2 cents. Dan

Let me start by apologizing for changing the topic, but how did you like the PB2s? How big of a room are in? From all the press that the PB2s got initially, it seems that 2 would have been overkill in all but the biggest rooms.

Jabez, I am no acoustics expert but it seems to me that at the very least you might run into unwanted vibration in the wall unit with the low frequency energy source being so close (inside) to it. My guess is that at low and medium volumes it may sound the same as a more traditional placement but at higher volumes things could get rattling. Just my 2 cents. Dan

Bruin, I havent been on here much lately but may I ask why you are selling the 2 PB2s?

Your room is pretty big. I personally think that $600 and under isnt going to cut it in a room that size. But as I am sure you have heard, no matter what the price point, your best bang for the buck is probably SVS. Good luck. Let us know what you decide. Dan

Frankie, I have one of the JBL boxes too and during a bout of acute "upgrade-itis" I contacted SVS about potential upgrades. Tom was honest enough to say upfront that he could offer nothing that would compete with the output of the JBL box. Of course he went on to say that down low the JBL would get spanked but you are correct about overall output. Dan

What do you mean you have a ticket open? I have the AVR 500 and the sensor does seem a little finicky. I have also had one other minor problem that I have been able to work around. Dan

Dillon, Congrats on the arrival of your baby. Would it be possible to rearrange the whole thing so that the TV/Mains/center/sub could be against the short wall opposite the fireplace? My living room with HT is dimensionally similar to that and all the action is on one of the short walls. I am not really sure how that will impact the sound but it seems to be an arrangement that feels less "cramped". Just a thought. Dan

You would of course have to seal up the openings where the tweeter and squawker previously resided right? Otherwise it would go from a sealed to a vented enclosure? I am no expert on this stuff but I thought some drivers worked better in sealed boxes and others did well with freely movable air. Dan

I am totally with Malcolm on this one. It must suck to have someone breaking your chops when you want to listen to HT or music, but being an a**hole in return wouldnt be my first answer. The other thought that occurs to me is that its possible that there are other neighbors being affected by the sound and only one is complaining. I only get loud with my stuff once in awhile...maybe 2 or 3 times per month. Sometimes I am surprised that the cops havent been called on me. I think the house walls are thick enough in the winter to keep things pretty well contained but when the warm weather comes and the windows open up...I think it gets pretty loud in the neighborhood. You guys are all right. There is a tremendous bang for the buck here, and I am well aware of that. I guess I got caught up in the hype surrounding the new SVS. Also, I want a bigger TV and it has become a source of friction in the house. Apparently she thinks there are "too many big boxes" in the living room. I figure if I can shrink the sub and get better performance, then I can squeeze in a bigger TV without a major blowout occuring. I also realize that to get more performance in a smaller box will require significant cash. Thanks for the input. Dan

Since JBL no longer sells the big bass bins, I wonder what I could get on ebay for this beast. I have a PE plate amp in a custom built enclosure (fair build quality) that would go with it. I am interested in decreasing the size and increasing the performance of my system in the low end. I know the JBL has extreme output at the expense of extension and my interest is quite piqued with this new SVS box. What do you think? Dan

Deth, I have a pair of Heresys that were a high school graduation gift from my brother in 1981. They served me well through college and grad school. They still sound phenomenal to me. They were the foundation around which I built my HT system. That consisted of hunting down a pair of similar vintage Heresys, a Klipsch Academy center and adding a sub...all done off ebay. Its worked out great for me. I love the sound...loud and Clear. My system looks anemic next to many here on the forum but I still have no upgrade bug with regard to the front and rear heresys. That meant hunting down similar vintage Heresys for rear speakers, hunting down a Klipsch Academy center (generally accepted as the center of choice for Heritage line unless you want custom build one to match your fronts) and then added a sub. My system looks anemic compared to what some of the fine gentlemen in this forum are running but I can tell you that I have always liked things loud and clear and for my money you cant beat Heritage Klipsch. Friends that come over to watch movies leave the house absolutely giddy. Good luck and keep us up to speed on how its going. Dan

MCA, I generally dont follow those statistics but at first glance it does seem pretty high. Over 1000 watts fully driven, thats like having your blow dryer on full blast for two hours straight (movie time).
