Which of these TVs is better?

Okay, I think I am gonna dump the projector idea as I think I do not have the correct room design and space for a projector. Due to this, I want to get a top-quality TV.

Here are my choices:

1. Pioneer SD-W501: http://www.pioneer.com.sg/products/product/homev/product/proj_sdt50w1.htm

2. Sony KV-ES38M91: http://www.sony-ae.com/television/kves38_sp.htm

3. Philips 36" widescreen: http://www2.consumer.philips.com/global/b2c/ce/catalog/product.jhtml?divId=0&groupId=TV&catId=WIDESCREENTV16_9&subCatId=36INCHWIDESCREEN&productId=36PW9525_05R

BTW, the Pioneer is actually 43" and not 50".

Please tell me which TV do you expect to have the best picture quality. Please keep aside the fact that some are 16:9 and have larger screens.

Heyas -

I think part of your problem is that these TV's are not US models so most of us do not have experience with them Frown.gif In general Pioneer makes some of the finest rear projection TV's. Phillips and Sony also make great sets. I could not open the Phillips links but you seem to have selected good quality TV's and I am sure that any of them will work fine.

If you watch a lot of DVD's I would suggest that you get the biggest widescreen that you can afford (or fit into your room). If you watch mainly TV then the widescreen is not as important as you do not live in the US and therefore will not be getting HDTV. Also you may want to look for a TV that has a 480P input (or PAL equivlant). Again I don't know what is available outside of the US market.

I know this is not a ton of information but I hope it helps.

Thanks.

But I'll by using my Home Theater for DVDs, music, and console gaming. Since not all console games are in 16:9 ratio, does this mean there will be bars on the sides of a 16:9 TV when playing a 4:3 ratio console game?

BTW, I'll be sitting about 12-13 feet from where the TV will be. How big should the TV be when sitting at this distance from the TV?

Secondly, Direct View TVs do have better picture quality than Rear Projection TVs, right?

Kain,

If you're a big gamer, I suggest getting a 4:3 television. I play tons of games (PS2, XBOX, Cube, Dreamcast). Although a lot of games are supporting 16:9 now, games that don't will have to be played with bars on the side (really annoying) or will have to be stretched. Also, although I am really impressed by some of the new rear-projection sets (especially pioneer), IMHO a direct view HDTV will give you the best image in a smaller room. I'm using a Panasonic HD, 32 inch, and it looks terrific (a lot sharper than the trinitron HD's at the same price.) Just some info to chew on. cwm30.gif

I say go for a 16:9.

All games now (on the next-gen consoles) or almost support 16:9, which is a more natural viewing mode for humans (you see much wider than higher).

The future is 16:9, the past is 4:3. It's true for TV, same for games. And I suppose you're not going to play many SNES games anymore, are you?

Besides, it seems that you are going to use this system mostly for movies, which of course warrants a 16:9 screen. Trust me, it's so frustrating to lose so much screen area when watching a movie! Better than watching 4:3 movies though... OAR rules!

You want a 16:9 screen for sure.

Also, direct-view TVs still have a big advantage in terms of picture quality. Just look at those big Sony XBR TVs, the picture is absolutely stunning with a prog scan DVD player.

So I guess it is between the Pioneer 43" Rear Projection 16:9 and the Philips 36" Direct View 16:9.

BTW, the Pioneer costs $3,000 and the Philips costs $2,725.

And one more thing, I am not sure if these TVs support progressive scan, but I do know that the 38" Sony Direct View 4:3 does support it as it has DRC Progressive.

One more thing. How come the Philips 36" Direct View 16:9 costs $820 more than the Philips 50" Rear Projection TV?

Well, I just found out that the game that I will be playing the most, Resident Evil on Nintendo GameCube, is a 4:3 game.

I have come down to two choices now:

1. Sony KV-ES38M91

2. Philips 36PW9525

Oh! And one more thing, I phoned Philips today to ask if the TV supports porgressive scan and they said no. This is also a thing of concern as the Sony does support progressive scan.

I have made the advantages and disadvantages of the Sony KV-ES38M91 and the Philips 36PW9525:

Advantages of Philips 36PW9525:

1. Has a 16:9 screen.

2. Will have a bigger picture than the Sony KV-ES38M91 when playing DVDs (due to the 16:9 screen of the Philips).

Disadvantages of Philips 36PW9525:

1. My favorite console game is 4:3, so I am not sure how it will look on the 16:9 screen.

2. Does not support progressive scan.

Advantages of Sony KV-ES38M91:

1. Supports progressive scan.

2. 4:3 screen better for console game.

Disadvantages of Sony KV-ES38M91:

1. DVDs will be smaller due to 4:3 screen.

Now, according to this "data," which do YOU think would be better for me?

For 12 to 13 feet away the recommended 4:3 size would be 48". It sounds like you are more worried about how the game console will look vs a DVD so I would go for the Sony. The fact that it will accept a progressive scan input is a plus.

The 16:9 will prep you for the future but if you can afford to purchase another TV in the next 3 to 4 years then the 4:3 is still a good choice. However if this TV has to last for longer than that I would choose the 16:9 TV simply becasue in that length of time most content for video games and DVD etc.. will be in 16:9.

Thanks. I could get a larger TV but I want to stick to Direct View TVs because of their picture quality. How far should I sit from a 38" 4:3 TV? And what about the 36" 16:9 TV?

The general rule is 3 times the diagonal size for a 4:3 set and 1 to 3 time the HEIGHT of the picture on a 16:9 set. Of course rules are meant to be broken so do what you like :-)

I sit about 9 ft away from my 65" 16:9 (32" picture height)
