Refinishing Birch Lacquered

The key to stripping the lacquer is to have a large supply of clean cotton rags and sufficient lacquer thinner.

Initially (after the drivers are removed...) is to use a high quality lacquer remover (paint remover that includes lacquer...). Follow the instructions until it appears athat all of the lacquer is removed.

Then.....

Using clean rags liberally soaked with lacquer thinning, wipe all surfaces repeatedly until the rags are fairly clean. Dispose of the rags. The test of whether or not the lacquer is removed is simple..... Drops of water on the exposed surfaces. If the water "beads", or does not spread evenly, then more lacquer thinner is required.

This may take a number of applications, and if you feel no progress is being made, re-apply the paint stripper solution.

Once you have the surfaces de-lacquered, then they should be liberally wiped down with mineral spirits until the rags have little residue.

At this point you can prep for stain, etc.

Look at the below listed links in regards to veneer, and preparation for staining.
