m00n
So when you walk into a theater, you will see many surround speakers. What I want to know is, are they delayed such that if a theater has five speakers on a side, will they all perfectly in sync with each other or do they fire off in a time delayed system... Example S1 fires off S2 fires off .5 seconds after S1 S3 fires off .5 seconds after s2 S4 fires off .5 seconds after s3 S5 fires off .5 seconds after s4 I am sure the time delay of .5 is not accurate but rather I was using it an example. boa12
i don't think it's that sophisticated moon. i think they use many speakers because of the many people sitting in diff spots in a large room (not for the effect for a few sitting in the sweet spot). though the sides & rears may carry dif info or same info w/ dif delays, if the theater has that capability (like dolby/thx ex). but i could be wrong. i think like w/ a denon you can run 2 pair of side surrounds at once (a+ & set the delays on each pair seperately (from what i remember in their manuals). ------------------ My Home Systems Page
Guest BobG
There is no delay between surrounds in a typical theater installation. The entire group of surrounds is delayed relative to the fronts. Using a delay line to put all the surrounds "in synch" would not create the ambient effect desired.

Ya, that makes since. I never thought about that, rather I was thinking of other sound affects like a car driving by or something to that affect.... Hmmm, can you image having four channels for surrounds, two sets per side, one for ambient sounds, a second for affects like cars driving by, etc... That almost implys you would need more channels up front also... Hey Dolby and DTS, you need to get busy on that ------------------ m00nsCinema to be the m00n system FRONTS: RF-7 CENTER: RC-7 SURROUNDS: RS-7 SUB: RSW-12 RECEIVER: Harman Kardon AVR 520 DVD: Toshiba SD 3205 (DD, DTS) TV: Samsung 27" Flatscreen COMPUTER: ProMedia 4.1 c>Microsoft XBOXc> f>
