I need a remote

I need a very cool remote that I can use to control the following:

-Reciever

-DVD/VCR player

-Double deck VCR

-TV

-Lights would be nice

I don't really know everything those touch screen remotes can do but the dvd/vcr and double deck vcr both have copy buttons which I found impossible to program on the cheap remote I have. The DVD/VCR has some other things on the remote which I think would be hard to program.

Could someone that has a nice remote tell me where I can find one? I also need to know how hard it is to program all the features of my devices into it. What do I have to do in order to get the lights controlled by the remote?

The most expensive remote I've seen is the Denon RC-8000 for $599. It would be helpful anyone could pick out a remote that doesn't cost quite that much.

Pronto TSU-2000. See information on it at the www.pronto.philips.com website and at www.remotecentral.com. It will do almost anything, and it's reasonably priced.

You can control lights using X10 technology, which sends signals through your house wiring to control devices that you plug into the wall or replace outlets with. The interface from the Pronto (which uses Infrared) to the X10 (which is electrical) is done using a converter which sees the IR from the Pronto and converts them to X10 commands and places them into the house wiring via an electrical outlet. Here's the interface: http://www.worthdist.com/X-10/ir543.htm

While X10 is a technology, it is also the name of a manufacturer. Their stuff is at www.x10.com. Many other manufacturers make X10 compatible equipment, like Leviton. You can see a whole bunch of them at www.smarthome.com. They are a little pricey, but it's a good starting point.

It's fun!

If you have a PalmOS based PDA, you could try OmniRemote . They have a 15 day trial version you can download to try out. It only cost around $25 to register.

If you don't have a PDA, then, as has been mentioned above, the Pronto units are real nice.
