John Brunner
May seem like a stupid question, but, I am getting my new H/K AVR 520 shortly and am replacing my AVR 500. I had heard that some say it is good to use (2) amps to drive the speakers. Not so much LF & HF but for power sake. I.e. drive the surrounds & woofer with one and the mains and center with the other. I would use, of course, the pre-amp section in the 520. Is this doable and am I gaining anything? If doable then how?
dougdrake
John - I'm doing something similar. I use my Denon 3300 receiver to drive my surrounds, and a separate 3 channel amp to drive the front speakers. I find that the Denon works much less and runs much cooler, so it must be good for it! Also, since I am using it for just a few speakers, it probably could give more power to them if necessary. However, we ARE talking rear speakers here, which don't see that much action anyway. I did this by connecting the front/center pre-amp outs of the Denon (the 520, in your case) to the pre-amp inputs of the amplifier (the 500, in your case). The Denon controls all volume/channel level settings. Doug ------------------ My System
boa12
john are you talkin also biamping biampable/biwirable speakers? if so you'll probably require some external xovers for those speaks. ------------------ My Home Systems Page
boa12
oh nevermind. you probably meant passive subwoofer for woofer. ------------------ My Home Systems Page
John Brunner
Well, actually my sub is powered (KSW 12). I was actually attempting to hook the surrounds and center to one (500) and the mains and sub to the other (520). This way I could have a dedicated amplifier for plain stereo if I wanted to. I believe the H/K 520 has adjustable crossovers in it; whereas, the 500 are fixed.
John Brunner
Holy mackrel Batman, I suppose I could also use the (500) to make a 6.1 system out of the (520).
QUiKSR20
I own the AVR 510 which is a 5.1 reciever. Now heres my question.. I heard talk awhile back about makeing 6.1 out of a 5.1 reciever with an old pro-logic reciever. How is this done. Do you run the rear preamp outputs to say any input on the prologic reciever and set it to dolby pro logic and let it decode the signal from the rear pre outs? I would love to figure this out since I have a chance to pick up an older pro logic HK receiver. ------------------ Thanks, Daryl Gregg MY Home Theatre Page HK AVR-510 Reciever Sony DVP-NS400D DVD SB-3 Mains SC-1 Center Quintet Rears KSW-12 Sub AR Proseries Interconects R.I.P. boa12
quick, i haven't done, but i'd think you'd run the 2 surround preouts to say the 2 dvd analog ins of 2nd receiver. then on the 2nd receiver w/ prologic, you set it up w/ 3 front speakers including center, & you connect the rear center speaker to its center speaker posts. you can also connect the 2 surround speaks to its front posts instead of the original receiver's surrounds posts if you want to use it's amps instead. this is just by head, but that's how i'd try it 1st. ------------------ My Home Systems Page
QUiKSR20
Thanks BOA.. I really would like to figure this out next week maybe if I get that reciever and go rent a 6.1 DVD and see how it sounds yeah your right I think I would have to run it from the analog outs on the DVD and not the first reciever because the first reciever cant decode 6.1 to begin with right? ------------------ Thanks, Daryl Gregg MY Home Theatre Page HK AVR-510 Reciever Sony DVP-NS400D DVD SB-3 Mains SC-1 Center Quintet Rears KSW-12 Sub AR Proseries Interconects R.I.P. boa12
quick, recheck to be sure, i was saying to run from the surround preouts on the 1st receiver (not the dvdp) to the dvd analog inputs of the 2nd receiver. & u don't have to have a "6.1 disk". as long as the 1st receiver puts out any material w/ surround channels such as dolby surround 2.0 (prologic), dolby digital 5.1, or dts 5.1, your 2nd receiver will matrix this surround info into a rear center channel (the center channel on said 2nd receiver). i don't know how well it'll work for dolby/thx surround EX and dts es 6.1 matrix material though. know these have rear center info encoded on the rear channels, but believe the 1st receiver would have to have the algorithms/decoder in the dsp to get this info reproduced in the rear center, either at all or most accurately. d/k for sure though. maybe the prologic decoder in the 2nd receiver will do an adequate job of decoding/pulling off the ex or es info on the surround channels (doubt it does at all though). best to check it w/ all types of material & see/hear. bet the 2 channel guys love seeing this here. ------------------ My Home Systems Page This message has been edited by boa12 on 06-11-2002 at 05:27 PM
