Robertd
I'm about to buy surrounds to match my KSF 10.5's as mains. I found (used) some of the Klipsch suggested surrounds (KSF-S5's) but before I buy them I have a question. I know that it's best to match speakers with the surrounds that a company intended them to be used with but what about the SS-1's? I can get the SS-1's new for the same price as the used KSF-S5's plus they have Wide Dispersion Surround Technology. Is WDST all it's cracked up to be or should I forget about it and go with the used KSF's that were intended to match my mains? Thanks! SteveLee
The KSF-S5's also use the WDST design (even though it's not mentioned on the spec sheets now available for discontinued Klipsch speakers). I've had a pair for about 2 years, and really appreciate the flexibility the WDST design allows for placement in my "difficult" room (doors and windows in the way of allowing a nice, symmetric speaker layout). The S5's also have a "threaded insert" in the back, making it easy to hang them from a wall or ceiling using brackets like OmniMounts. Since the S5's are voice-matched to your 10.5's, I think it'd be wise to go with them instead of the SS-1's. As long as the used set you're looking at is in good shape, I think there's no need to compromise in getting a truely matched set of speakers for your HT setup. In case you're interested, there are currently a couple pair of S5's listed on eBay (so you can compare to the deal you've already looked into): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1362063398 Good luck! fini
Definitely go for the KSF-S5's. I use them...they're great! Plus, they're the perfect match for the 10.5's. I don't know if you have one yet, but I've recently seen the matching center, the KSF-C5, on eBay. Again, highly recommended. Here are 2 C5's on eBay right now. One closes in 4 hrs... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1361573647 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1362747823 Good luck! fini
Robertd
Thanks for the feedback guys. Thats 2 more votes for the used KSF. Let me throw in another issue, the wife factor. The SS-1 is a good bit smaller than the older KSF and would help to appease her as far as where I want to mount them. Since we are talking about surrounds, would I actually hear that much of a difference?
SteveLee
I don't actually have experience with the SS-1's, so can't say how they'll sound with your KSF speakers. It does seem, though, that the Holy Grail of HT speakers is to get a set that's timbre matched. I don't think the SS-1's are all that much smaller, either. So, I'd still give my vote to the S5's. They are available in a white finish (see eBay link below), which may help them blend better with your walls and ceiling. Would that help any with the spousal approval factor? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1362625004 This message has been edited by SteveLee on 07-01-2002 at 12:33 AM
Robertd
Well I took you guys advice and ordered the KSF's instead of the SS-1's. Thanks again!
