I36
New member and first post. Looking to tap the expertise on this forum! Recently got a used 7.2 THX Ultra2 setup for my 18x22x9 home theater room. They are awesome! Brings a whole new experience to watching movies at home. I'm spec'ing out ceiling speakers for a future upgrade to 7.2.4, but not sure which way to go. The ultra2's sound great, and I don't want to buy something that will be completely at odds with the sound I get from the existing setup. Or are the Atmos height channels not that critical to the overall listening experience, and any quality speaker will suffice? I've heard that the ultra2's really come into their own once driven with some external amplification, and I'm all about trying that out. Plus, I need the external amplification to get to x.x.4 with my receiver anyway, so it's win-win. These ceiling speakers would be driven from the Yamaha receiver. Thanks for any input. My Setup: KL-650-THX - L,C,R KL-525-THX - Rear Surrounds KS-525-THX - Surrounds KW-120-THX - Subs(x2) Yamaha RX-A3050 (with future Emotiva XPA-3 or similar amp)
Moderators Youthman Posted February 5, 2016 Moderators Share Posted February 5, 2016 Welcome to the forums. Would love to see some pics of your setup. I haven't had the chance to hear the THX Ultra2 myself but I have heard those that own them that they are fairly inefficient and really benefit from external amps. ClintonH
You don't have to match the Atmos ceiling speakers but you want to stick with approx the same size as your LCR divers. The more important spec in looking for Atmos is you want to look for a coaxial speakers with conical 90 degree dispersion. If your wanting to stay with Klipsch they recommend these for in ceiling. http://www.klipsch.com/products/reference-in-ceiling-speakers#cdt-5650-c-ii I went with a cheaper version but basically the same specs wise and I'm super happy with the results, the up mixing is fantastic since the content is limited as of now. I36
Youthman, my setup is nothing like what you have happening right now. Looking good BTW! I'm still acquiring the pieces, but I have plans to bump out(in actually) a basement wall for some built in space to house my LCR's and tv. I'm playing around with REW today so I'll try to get some pics posted at that time.
